Vic Foundation purchases Laerdal SimMan 3G for staff educationWith our 100th anniversary year behind us, the Victoria General Hospital is now officially into our second century as a hospital serving Manitobans in our community.

This new century has begun with a bang as the Vic has started offering an array of new surgical services. Our hand/wrist surgery program has already been implemented and a foot/ankle surgery program will soon follow. The Vic is also becoming the major centre for Bariatric and Metabolic surgical intervention. After surgery, patients will be educated on lifestyle changes by an interprofessional team so they can continue to make informed choices for years to come.

With the help of the Hearne family and the Vic Foundation, the Vic will be purchasing the Laerdal SimMan 3G that will

offer educators the ability to provide realisticchallenging scenarios based on simulation to test critical thinking and clinical decision making. Benefits include educational effectiveness, multi-functional use across all areas of patient care and practice in preparation for unlikely and unusual case scenarios.

Simulation training helps people practice working together as a team under realistic situations.

This type of hands-on training improves essential communication and coordination skills and develops effective, interactive processes. It is critical to practice in the same way it occurs in reality.

The Laerdal SimMan 3G will be part of a plan to develop the Hearne Learning Centre in the near future. This centre will provide staff with hands-on training using state-of-the-art equipment.

The Vic will eventually become a simulation training facility. This connection will allow for more teamwork as clinical practitioners across Winnipeg will have the opportunity to collaborate in this exciting initiative.

The Vic Foundation has now turned its focus towards the Miracle Garden that will surround the Buhler Cancer Centre.

There is a growing body of researchthat confirms the inter-connectedness of body-mind-

spirit in the healing process and demonstrates increased positive health outcomes through direct contact with natural landscapes. The therapeutic benefits of gardens have been shown to include relief from the stress that most often accompanies illness and treatment, alleviation of actual physical symptoms, less need for pain medication, and overall faster recovery.
