This year’s Community Engagement and Volunteering (CEV) Fair
was a huge success. Three hundred students were in attendance
eager to learn about internship and volunteer opportunities in the
Worcester community.
Twenty-five organizations were present at the fair, representing a
broad spectrum of job fields. These non-profits, government organi-
zations, and community development agencies provided students
with a wealth of information about available internships and volun-
teer opportunities in their organizations. As Clark is known for its
strong commitment to the community, Career Services was happy
to help facilitate this connection.
Career Services has moved! You will
now find us in the Liberal Education
and Effective Practice (L.E.E.P) Cen-
ter at Dana Commons on the corner
of Maywood St. & Florence St.
This geographic move is indicative of
the changes that are happening
around Clark as part of our Universi-
ty’s new L.E.E.P initiative. Other evi-
dence of L.E.E.P.’s impact is the
L.E.E.P. Pioneers: a group of stu-
dents working on specialized projects
that connect their academic interests
to practical research, internships, and
learning. As a key player in making
the connection between academia
and students’ work experience, Ca-
reer Services is excited to see how
L.E.E.P. will engage all facets of the
university.

On November 2, twenty Clark
University students participated
in the 2012 Liberal Arts Recruit-
ing Connection Career Fair at the
Boston Tremont Hotel. Over fifty
organizations were present rep-
resenting a broad spectrum of
employers and business schools.
Many students said that the fair
was helpful for them and was a
good chance to practice their
networking skills. One student
mentioned that she was able to
set-up an interview with an em-
ployer as a result of meeting him
at the fair. For any student con-
sidering attending a job fair, Bar-
bara Zerillo recommends
researching the companies
ahead of time and being pre-
pared to talk to the employers
you are most interested in.
In September, Career Services Graduate Assistant
Nina Eichner worked with Dana Hall Resident Advisor
Tanya Jung to create a Career Services program for
her residents in Dana residence hall. Nina created a
program designed to introduce students to the basics
of resume writing. The workshop addressed the things
that should and should not be included on a resume as
well as tips for layout and formatting. The group
reviewed the Career Services resume packet and also
edited a sample resume to search for mistakes. Sever-
al students visited the Career Services drop-in hours
for individual resume critiques following the residence
hall presentation. The Career Services Graduate Assis-
tants plan to offer additional programs in residence
halls this year to familiarize more students with the as-
sistance available in Career Services.
LGBTQ career information ses-
sion. Barbara Zerillo, one of
Clark’s career counselors, led
the session and talked about
strategies and resources avail-
able for LGBTQ individuals
heading into the workforce,
including LGBTQ rights in dif-
ferent states, websites where
one can search for LGBTQ-
friendly jobs, and things to con-
sider when writing a resume or
cover letter. If you were not
able to attend the information
session you can call Career
Services to make an appoint-
ment or e-mail Barbara Zerillo
at [email protected]. All of
the Career Services staff are
able and willing to meet with
students who have LGBTQ
specific questions.

On November 12 and 13 Clark
held its annual Alumni-in-
Residence event. Alumni from all
over the country returned to
Clark to advise, inspire and per-
haps learn from the current gen-
eration of Clarkies.
Alumni participated in class dis-
cussions, sat on career-related
panels and met informally with
faculty and students. They also
participated in a networking
lunch for students. This event
was highly informative both for
alumni—who were interested in
understanding how Clark had
changed over the years—and for
students—who were able to
learn from and network with suc-
cessful and passionate alumni.
Clark students are encouraged
to network with alumni through-
out their Clark careers by joining
the Clark Alumni Networking
Group on LinkedIn.

Brittany
Murphy,
an ambi-
tious sen-
ior inter-
ested in
pursuing a
career in
Clinical Psychology, is currently
completing an academic intern-
ship at the Worcester State Hos-
pital and Recovery Center. At
the hospital, Brittany assists with
group therapy sessions and in-
formally counsels patients
through individualized contact.
By working at the hospital Britta-
ny has been able to practically
contextualize what she has
learned in classes like Abnormal
Psychology and Psychology of
Personality. Brittany hopes that
this hands-on experience will
give her valuable insight into the
world of Clinical Psychology.
Serious students interested in
this field should contact Brittany
for more information about in-
terning at the hospital.
On September 19 Career Ser-
vices hosted its annual law
school panel in conjunction with
the prelaw program.
Admissions deans from Boston
University, Harvard University,
the University of California at
Davis and American University
came to educate forty of Clark’s
prospective law students. They
covered a variety of topics
including the law school applica-
tion process, the LSAT, and the
personal statement.
Facilitated by Mark Miller, the
advisor for the prelaw program,
this panel provided valuable in-
sights to our students interested
in law. For information about
applying to Law School, contact
Professor Miller in the Political
Science department.

This past summer Dan Deutsch, a senior at Clark, was one of eight stu-
dents to receive a Barth internship award. Dan’s Barth funding allowed
him to move to San Diego, CA for the summer and serve as an intern with
Jeans 4 Justice, a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness
about sexual violence through campaigns that mobilize young people.
Dan spent the summer expanding and maintaining the organization’s so-
cial media presence through posting daily blogs and doing publicity via
Facebook and Twitter. Dan found this opportunity to be life-changing and
is continuing his project this school year back at Clark. Dan is organizing a
fashion show, art gallery show, and Difficult Dialogue conversation at
