FACs (forward air controllers) in Vietnam flew low and slow, searchingfor signs of an elusive enemy. Often they trolled themselves as bait for theNVA troops to try to shoot down. When a friendly unit made contact, having a FAC overhead made their day, because the FACs controlled thebomb-, rocket-, and napalm-laden fast movers, fighter jets, and attackaircraft whose ordnance often made the difference between life and death. They were regarded by many of their air force and naval aviator brethrenas insane, suicidal, or both. In addition to the perils of enemy fire whichranged from lucky AK-47 shots to .51 caliber machine guns and SA-7shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles, they had to watch out to keep frombeing blown up in a B-52 Arc-Light strike or knocked down by friendlyartillery.

Patton was champing at the bit to lead the D-Day invasion, butEisenhower placed him in command of a decoy unit, the First U.S. ArmyGroup. Nearly seven weeks after D-Day, Patton finally got his chanceto take Third Army into battle. He began a ten-month rampage acrossFrance, driving through Germany and into Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakiaand Austria. Along the way Third Army forces entered the Battle of theBulge, breaking the siege of Bastogne. It was a turning point in the war,and afterward the Third Army pushed eastward again. Archival photos alongwith frequent quotes complete the portrait of Patton as well as his men asthey fight their way across the Third Reich.

At the heart of the evil of Nazism was Hitler’s “witch doctor,” HeinrichHimmler, and his peculiar and deadly organization with the mundanename Schutzstaffel, literally “protective squadron.” Undoubtedly youknow them better as the feared SS, the very essence of Nazism. Theirthreatening double lightning bolt is perhaps the most dreaded symbolof the Third Reich. The facts of the SS’s origins are truly stranger thanfiction. If you thought Raiders of the Lost Ark was an inspired Hollywoodfiction, think again. Hitler’s Master of the Dark Arts reveals the hidden“truths” of the SS in full and morbidly fascinating detail.

This is a political history of nuclear weapons from the discovery of fissionin 1938 to the nuclear train wreck that seems to loom in our future. Itis an account of where those weapons came from, how the technologysurprisingly and covertly spread, and who is likely to acquire thoseweapons next and most importantly why. The authors’ examinationof post Cold War national and geopolitical issues regarding nuclearproliferation and the effects of Chinese sponsorship of the Pakistaniprogram is eye opening. The reckless “nuclear weapons programs for sale”exporting of technology by Pakistan is truly chilling, as is the on-againoff-again North Korean nuclear weapons program.

The German Wars: A Concise History, 1866-1945 outlines the historyof European warfare from the Wars of German Unification to the endof the World War II. The title aside, the book is not another historyof the German military; it takes a much broader approach looking atpolitical, social, economic, and military developments across Europe, andthe United States during the period. The “German War” part of the titleis there because Germany plays the central part in the story. Howeverthe key element threading its way through this volume is the IndustrialRevolution.
