How to Become a CPA
The requirements to qualify for a CPA license differ somewhat from state to state, but the primary
categories of requirements are the same and can be grouped into three areas, (A) education, (B)
examination, and (C) experience. Information here pertains to the NY State requirements since the
majority of Baruch students who become CPAs will practice in NY. Detailed information about education
and experience areas are provided below; for exam info please visit one of these websites:www.nasba.org, www.aicpa.org orwww.cpa-exam.org.
The Education Requirements. To qualify for NY State licensure, applicants are required to have at least
150 semester hours of college or university education, including at least a bachelors degree, 33 semester
hours of accounting and taxation, and 36 semester hours of general business coursework.
The 33 semester hours of accountingMUSTinclude courses in cost or managerial accounting, financial
accounting and reporting, taxation, and auditing and attestation. (Courses in auditing and attestation must
be taken in the upper division of undergraduate institutions or in a graduate institution.)
The 36 semester hours of general business courseworkMAYinclude, but is not limited to, marketing,
management, statistics, finance, economics, commercial law, and computer science. The curriculum mustalso include, either as stand alone courses OR integrated into other courses, the study of business or
accounting communications, ethics and professional responsibility, and accounting research. Baruchs
Bachelors degree accounting major and Masters programs include this material. Go to the NY State
Education Department Office of the Professions website for more information about these requirements:
http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpalic.htm.
Baruchs Registered CPA Programs. Baruch offers three such programs: a) BBA in accountancy plus
an MS in Taxation or Accountancy, b) BBA in a business discipline other than accountancy plus an MS
in Accountancy, and c) A non-business bachelors degree from Baruchs Weissman School (or another
accredited college or university) plus an MS or MBA with an accounting major.
Note: Baruch is not able to provide access to its accounting or tax courses to individuals who are notenrolled in one of its degree programs. Also, with the beginning of FALL 2010 semester Baruch will not
allow second-Bachelor-degree candidates to pursue major in Accountancy. Therefore, the only choice
available for those who already have a Bachelor degree is to pursue one of our graduate programs.
Information about other schools in NY that can offer accounting courses can be obtained either from the
NY State Society of CPAs (www.nysscpa.org) or from other schools within the CUNY system.
The Professional Experience Requirement. In addition to meeting the education requirements and
passing all four sections of the CPA Exam, candidates for licensure must complete at least one year of
acceptable work experience. Experience may be completed before or after taking the CPA Exam and is
not related to qualifying to take the Exam. Candidates experience is evaluated by the NY State Board of
Public Accountancy. It is essential that students consult the website for current information.
SPECIAL NOTE: The NY State Board for Public Accountancy has recently modified its regulations to
separate eligibility to take the CPA Exam from the total education requirements to become a CPA as detailed
above. Students can now qualify to take the CPA Exam after completing at least: 120 semester hours of
college or university coursework (which must include) courses in: - financial accounting, - cost/managerial
accounting, - federal income taxation AND - auditing and attestation.
Students who take and pass the CPA Exam after meeting these minimal requirements still need to meet the total
150 hours of education and work experience requirements to become CPAs. Applications to take the CPA
Exam are submitted to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) while applications
for licensure are submitted to the NY State Education Department Office of the Professions.
