••

Welcome back to the 2010-2011 school year! I look

forward to an exciting year as we lay out plans for the bond projects for the next three years. Some preliminary projects are being completed for the start of this school year, with the majority of major renovations taking place next summer. This year we are celebrating having our multiage program on campus and housed within the 1950 addition of Brick Elementary School. Construction is underway to complete a temporary main office, renovate the student bathrooms, and install a PA system

for the multiage program. We are also replacing the asphalt that has deteriorated throughout the district, with full replacement planned for next summer. As the planning stages begin, we will be asking for community input related to each project. If you are interested in joining any committees for these projects, please contact your building administrator. One project that is being planned is the renovation of the Bessie Hoffman building into a Career and Tech Academy. Time constraints and state licensing regulations will delay opening our new cosmetology program until second semester. At the same time, we will also be unveiling our online learning opportunities for those students who prefer to learn at their own pace. This program will allow students to earn high school credit and develop skills to be successful in the 21st century workforce. Another aspect of this programming is the development of a partnership with Cleary University (no connection to me) to provide distance-learning business and marketing classes for high school students. We will also be involved in the International Baccalaureate program that will be opening for Washtenaw County students.I am pleased to announce that all of our elementary schools and the middle school made AYP (adequate yearly progress) as mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act. The high school did not fare as well and did not meet AYP for this year. While it is not my style to make excuses, it is important for parents to know our students enrolled in the Early College Alliance were not counted in our scores. That reduces our test scores by forty students, which can have a significant impact on the high school scores. We have registered an appeal to the state but have been told they will not correct the problem until the next testing cycle. In other words, our scores will remain as is and the state will not include our ECA students or recalculate our scores. It will be my personal goal to see that there are significant improvements in the high school MME scores for the upcoming school year and that our ECA students are included in our high school scores.Have a fantastic school year, I hope to see each and every one of you this year!

LINCOLN EARLY CHILDHOOD SERVICESThe Lincoln Early Childhood Center, located in Model Elementary School, offers a range of comprehensive services for children from birth through age five. The center utilizes a model that emphasizes that parents are a child’s first, best, and most influential teachers. The Early Childhood Center also includes classrooms for Great Start Readiness Program (pending state funding), Early Childhood Developmentally Delayed, and Lincoln’s Early On Program. The goal of the center is to establish a primary prevention community available to all families living in the Lincoln community. Through strong parental involvement, the Early Childhood Center is an avenue promoting the improved social, cognitive, and physical growth of young children in our community.

Pre-SchoolLincoln offers two different pre-school programs. Students for these programs must be four years old by December 1st and reside in the Lincoln School District. Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is a grant-funded pre-school program. Eligibility for this program is based on household income and a child’s “risk factors.” For more information on this program please call 484-7070. This program is tentative pending state funding.Lincoln also offers a tuition-based pre-school run by Bemis Farms, and located at Redner Elementary. For more information on this program please call 484-7000, ext. 7411.

CURRICULUM ON THE WEBOver the summer, the Lincoln Consolidated Schools’ Curriculum Department has been working on a process of making our entire curriculum available electronically in a parent- friendly format for parents, prospective parents, and community members. Currently all of our parent-friendly versions of our curriculum documents are now available for language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies for grades K-8. Curriculum documents for grades 9-12 will be made available soon, and we are working to have a course syllabus for every course offered at Lincoln High School available electronically as well. To see the K-8 curriculum simply go the Curriculum Department page located under the “Curriculum” tab and click on either the elementary curriculum or the middle school curriculum link to see all of our available curriculum links. Once inside, you can click on the on the appropriate grade level and subject. In the documents you will find the Essential Overview of Units, Priority Content Standards, and the Essential Vocabulary for each subject and grade level. We hope

that this will assist you in not only understanding what is taught at each grade level, but also in helping your child at home. As we continue to update our electronic versions of the documents, we will add them to the website and let families know through our district e-newsletter when they are available. For questions regarding the curriculum for any subject area, contact your child’s teacher, the building principal, or the Curriculum Department for more information.

MEAP SCORES IMPROVE Thanks to the hard work of our students, staff, and parents, MEAP scores have continued to improve this year in all of our buildings K-8. The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests were given in October to all students in grades 3-9, in the areas of reading (grades 3-8), mathematics (grades 3-8), science (grades 5 and 8), and social studies (grades 6 and 9). Our scores improved in eleven of fifteen areas tested, and as a district, and we have closed several gaps in student achievement between our various populations of students. Individual buildings have many points of pride. For a complete look at your child’s school, visit www.lincoln.k12.mi.us.

INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT PROGRAMLincoln Consolidated Schools practices an integrated pest management program. As part of an effective, environmentally sensitive pest management program, school district buildings and grounds may be treated periodically with chemicals to aid in the control of pests or weed growth. In accordance with regulation 637 of the Michigan Pesticide Control Act, notice will be posted at the entrance of the facility. Parents may choose to be notified by mail, to be postmarked 3 days before the treatment. Return the form below to be notified prior to a treatment of the affected building or grounds. Pesticides may be applied in an emergency situation without prior notification. For further information on this subject, contact the Facilities Department at 484-7037.

Click on the Food Service tab and you can find monthly menus, policy updates, helpful information about the program and nutrition, as well as links to websites to get more information regarding school meals and healthy lifestyles. You can also check your student’s lunch account balance, make a deposit, and see what they have been purchasing at breakfast and lunch.

Lincoln Food Service ProceduresThe computer software used by the Food Service Department tracks deposits and food purchases. It is important that your student use only his/her lunch account. Sharing accounts is not allowed. Middle school and high school students will be required to show school ID before charging to his or her account. Deposits may be made in any amount, but no change is given. Students not eligible for free meals are expected to maintain a positive balance in their food service accounts in order to purchase breakfast, lunch, or a-la-carte items. If they do not have money in their accounts, they are expected to bring lunch from home. Students are given numerous verbal and written reminders if their account balance is nearing zero.

ONLINE LUNCH ACCOUNTSParents may make online credit card deposits to student food service accounts using our secure food service software. Please note that there is a $2.00 fee per transaction to cover processing costs. One deposit may be split among more than one family member without incurring an additional $2.00 fee. Visa, MasterCard, and Discover cards are accepted. A parent user name and password is needed to review your student’s account and to process a credit card deposit. To request a login and password please email [email protected]. Include student name(s), parent name(s), and home address. Please allow approximately 48 hours for a reply. Your user name and password carries over to the current school year and it will continue to give you access to your child’s lunch account.

What is a regular lunch meal??A regular lunch meal is a meal at the regular meal price or a meal that can qualify for the free or reduced meal price. A regluar meal consists of an entree item (including bread and protein), a fruit, a vegetable, and milk. Students must take three of these items for the meal to qualify as a “regular meal”. If they take less than three components or more than the five, they will be charged the a-la- carte price for each item. At the middle and high schools; french fries, chips, slush, cookies, bottled drinks, etc... are NOT included in the regular lunch meal. These items are available for purchase but are not discounted for students eligible for free or reduced price meals.

PowerSchool is a software application Lincoln Consolidated Schools uses to track student demographics, schedules, attendance, and grades. High school and middle school teachers use PowerSchool to enter assignment scores and calculate quarterly and semester grades for progress reports and report cards.

The key benefit of PowerSchool to parents and students is its ability to allow you to track progress by viewing assignment scores, grades, and attendance records via the Internet.

For families with more than one student in grades 6-12, a unique username and password are provided on your student’s report card for access to each student’s information. Please keep your unique password confidential so only you can access this information.

To access PowerSchool open your web browser to www.lincoln.k12.mi.us and select the PowerSchool button on the right.

Parent/Student Username:Enter your Web ID

Parent/Student Password:Enter your Password

Allow teachers at least one week after an assignment has been turned in to enter the score into PowerSchool. Beware, however, that there may be times when more time is needed to grade large projects.

POWERSCHOOL IS A TOOLPowerSchool is only one of the tools available to parents to help you track how your children are doing. Of course we also all know grades are only part of the story when we look to understand how students learn. Real learning takes place as knowledge is applied.

Lincoln Consolidated Schools

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! Again this year you will be receiving route information from your child’s building, along with their building and teacher assignments. The letters will work

in conjunction with this booklet and are the most current routes as of August 9, 2010. All routes and times are subject to change as enrollment changes are received.

For your convenience the transportation hot line is updated twice a day. The line will inform you of any school closings, school delays, road closures, or late buses during the school year.

Transportation Hot Line: (7)8-7000 ext. 01

Finding Your BusTo find your child’s bus pick-up location, find the section that applies to your student(s) -- Secondary, Elementary, Childs -- and then find the number and address nearest your home. Because many buses may pick up on the same road, please check the list carefully. You will find the approximate pick-up time by the address nearest your home.

Kindergarten BusingFor your child’s safety, a parent/guardian or appointed emergency contact person (must be on the emergency card) must be at the bus stop to pick up your kindergarten student every day.

Childcare Arrangement FormsChildcare Arrangement Forms are available at the Transportation Department or in your child’s school office. Forms can be completed and/or dropped off at the Transportation Department between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. There could be up to a two (2) week delay in processing the forms at the start of the school year.

Bus Stop Change RequestRequests for a bus stop change can be made on a Concern/Complaint Form available in the Transportation Office. All requests will be researched and you will be notified of the results within thirty days of the request. Please be aware that all requests must meet the criteria for change and are not automatically honored.

Bus Stop CriteriaFor more information on Public Act 187, the list of criteria used to establish bus stops, or frequently asked questions and answers, please visit the Michigan Department of Education web site at www.michigan.gov/mde.

OR

ON

PLEASE NOTETimes are approximate and are subject to change. Please be patient, especially for the first couple of weeks of school. Pick-up times could vary as much as 15 minutes, especially early in the year. Times will improve and changes will be implemented if needed.

NEW TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURECHILDCARE ARRANGEMENT FORMS

Starting with the 2010-2011 school year, if you had a Childcare Arrangement Form (Babysitter Form) on file at the end of the school year, your child will be scheduled on that bus route until a new request is made to the Transportation Department. You will need to complete a new form if you have changed childcare providers or are no longer utilizing a sitter. This new procedure is expected to help alleviate many of the route changes that occur at the start of the school year. Childcare Arrangement Forms can be picked up from the Transportation Department or your child’s school office.

MODEL FIELD TRIP TO LOWDEN ONE-ROOM SCHOOLHOUSEOn Friday, June 4th, two kindergarten classes from Model Elementary went on a very special field trip back in time to see what school was like for children who lived in this area one hundred years ago. Students from Mrs. Martinez and Mrs. Krumrei’s classes walked to Lowden School, the one-room schoolhouse located next to our building.Spelling Bees were very popular during the 19th century so students practiced their kindergarten spelling words. They also used slates and slate pencils to practice letter formation and read from the original McGuffy readers. Students played some traditional games and songs. Several children enjoyed dressing up for the field trip in clothing similar to that time period.Mr. Dan Makarewich met the classes and spoke to the students about the time of the one-room schoolhouses and the history of the Lincoln area.

REDNER STUDENT EARNS SCHOLARSHIP TO SCIENCE CAMPJessica Oberhoffer, a Redner fifth grader, earned one of just 48 scholarships to attend a two-week summer science camp at Central State University in Wilberforce, OH. The program applies science, technology, engineering, and math skills to a camp theme. ExxonMobil, Bernard Harris, Central State University, and the Institute for Urban Education sponsored this event. The 2010 theme was “Back to the Future by Way of Aviation.” Jessica comes from a family of aeronautical engineers, and she has a strong interest in learning about air and space concepts. She wants to thank her supportive family, her classroom teacher, Ms. Johnson, her technology teacher, Mrs. Ryburg, and the school social worker, Ms. vonKulajta for bringing this opportunity to her attention.

LOWDEN SCHOOLHOUSE ANNUAL PUMPKIN SALEThe Annual Lowden Schoolhouse Pumpkin Sale will be held on Saturday, October 1th from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The schoolhouse is located next to Model Elementary on Whittaker Road. There will be pumpkins, cider, doughnuts, and perhaps even a raffle. The schoolhouse will be open for visitors and we would enjoy having you stop by. Lowden Schoolhouse is one of the original one-room schools that consolidated in 1924 to form the Lincoln Consolidated School District. The Lowden Schoolhouse is an independent non-profit corporation. All funds raised during the pumpkin sale are used for maintenance on the building; along with a scholarship fund, which is awarded to a Lincoln graduating senior that will be attending Eastern Michigan University.

FROM THE DESK OF PRINCIPAL MCGEHEEAs I begin my thirty-third year at Lincoln and my third year as High School Principal, I wanted to take a few moments to share some thoughts about our high school students. It has been my pleasure to serve the Lincoln community. Serving as high school principal has been a very rewarding experience for me. It confirmed what I have always thought, that the Lincoln community has some of the best and brightest students in the county attending our schools. This past spring I wrote an article inviting the community to attend our graduation ceremony. The purpose was to see, first hand, the high quality students we have graduating from Lincoln High School. Many of you took me up on that. We had over 2,600 people witness 292 of our young adults cross over to the world beyond Lincoln. It was an inspiring community event. As we begin the 2010-2011 school year it is critical that the community and students know that the Lincoln administration expects that each and every one of our students will attend a college or university once they graduate from Lincoln High School. It is very clear to

us that there are fewer career opportunities available to our children that do not obtain an education beyond a high school diploma. It is important that we as a community encourage all of our children to work hard, attend school daily, and take advantage of the educational opportunities available to them here at the high school. To that end, I am sure you would like to know what LHS graduates plan to do following graduation. Some of the colleges and universities Lincoln graduates will be attending this fall: Cal State, Central Michigan University, The University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University, Indiana Tech, Grand Valley State University, Howard University, New York University, University of Colorado, Western Michigan University, Rose Hulman Institute, Oakland University, Richmond University, Washtenaw Community College, Cleary University, Concordia University, and Wayne State University. We should all be very, very proud of our graduates. I again want to thank you for allowing me to serve the Lincoln community. Through your support the students of Lincoln High School have quality educational programs and facilities that prepare them for a bright future and rewarding careers. I am proud to be a member of the Lincoln community and a Lincoln Railsplitter.

WELCOME BACK TO BRICK! You may notice some changes at Brick for the 2010-2011 school year. We are excited to be joined by the Lincon Multi-Age program, which moved to campus from the Bessie Hoffman building. They will be located in the rooms in the cafeteria wing of the building. We look forward to working together with the students, families, and staff of this very successful program. We will also be preparing for construction, the bulk of which will happen during the summer of 2011. Brick is scheduled to receive some major updates, including wiring upgrades to accommodate the needs of today’s technology. Speaking of technology, we would like to thank the Brick PTO for purchasing ELMO’s and projectors for each classroom. Some of the staff were able to use the equipment last year, and all staff will receive training for integrating the features into their instruction. We have made some adjustments within Brick. This year we will have four sections of second through fifth grades, and two sections of first grade. Two additional sections of first grade will be housed at Model Elementary, and students in those rooms will transition to Brick for second grade. The staff at Brick spent a lot of time reviewing instructional practice and student achievement last year, and this work will continue this year. We saw a lot of growth and are eager to see that trend continue!

PICKREM SCHOLARSHIP AT LHSLincoln High School received a surprise $50,000 bequest this summer from the estate of Ileen Pickrem, Class of 1937. In accordance with her wishes, Lincoln will start a scholarship fund in her name. Our fantastic high school secretary, Mrs. Laurie, located Ms. Pickrem’s report card. Not an easy course load; her classes included chemistry, physics, geometry, biology, and history. We note though that it was a different time for women, since home economics appeared each semester for five straight years. If any alumni remember Ms. Pickrem or her family, please drop a note with anything you can recall to Mr. McGehee, High School Principal. We would love to include a more personalized history with our scholarship materials.

LHS TEACHER SET OUT ON A “BLUES ODYSSEY” OF THE SOUTHERN DELTA OF THE UNITED STATESIn the spring of 2010, Mr. Kyle Kipp was awarded a grant through the National Endowment of the Humanities to participate in an exclusive educational workshop sponsored by Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. Out of over 300 total applicants, he was one of the 80 individuals selected. Delta State University will award Mr. Kipp six (6) graduate credits and waive all tuition fees upon completion of the course.Through this workshop, Kipp will travel to the heart of the Mississippi Delta to study the region’s history, culture, and music.

FRESHMEN ORIENTATION LINK CREWAugust 31st - 8:00 a.m. to NoonLincoln High School participates in the nationwide Link Crew Program, an organization whose sole purpose is to help freshmen feel more comfortable as well as help them achieve success in their first year of high school. The Link-In Crew freshman orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support freshmen by assigning them a junior or senior Link-In Leader as a mentor during this first year. This Link-In Leader is a responsible older student who was hand-selected from a large pool of applicants and has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader on our campus. Following is some information to let you know what you and your student can expect in advance of their first day of school.

Your student can expect to receive a reminder invitation to Freshman Orientation Day in the mail. If he or she has not received the invitation by August 24, 2010, please call the main office at 734-484-7004 and request one. A day or two before orientation your student will receive a phone call from her or his Link-In Crew Leader personally inviting your student to orientation day and giving the details of where to be and what time.Your student is encouraged not to bring backpacks, purses, or other items, as the day is quite active.Because the day is active, please make sure your student wears comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement.

This is a student-only function, so we encourage you to let your child attend on her or his own. Please feel free, however, to return at noon and walk through registration with your student. During registration from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., pictures will be taken and paperwork will be turned in.
