Men’s Choir The Men’s Choir has re-joined the choral offerings at CWU. Seven weeks ago a call for “any guy who likes to sing” went around campus. The first night 20 men came, with 15 more eventually to follow. They have come a long way from that first night. When the guys walked in, some did not know what part they were, and some had never sung in a choir before. As it turns out, it is a balanced group of 6 to 8 per section. Anyone (we mean ANYONE) who enjoys singing can be a part of the group. The group meets from 7-9 pm on Monday evenings. University Chorale The 130 voice University Chorale, Central’s largest choral ensemble, includes many students who are non-music majors. All singers are welcomed, from those with significant choral experience to those with little background in singing. Special emphasis is placed on music education and choral pedagogy/repertoire. A wide variety of styles is included in the choir’s repertoire, from Renaissance to spirituals and multi-cultural music. The choir performs a minimum of one concert a quarter, as well as for other special events. Chamber Choir The Chamber Choir is the premier choral ensemble at Central. Its singers, at the sophomore level or higher, are chosen through a competitive audition process which includes sight singing, pitch retention, interval reading, rhythm reading, as well as singing. Rehearsing five hours a week, singers also attend a weekly sectional, run exclusively by the section leaders. Singers are expected to do most of their note learning outside of rehearsal, due to the amount of literature covered.

The choir’s repertoire is widely varying, including major works as well as music from each period of music history. In February, 2007 Chamber Choir will present Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms with members of the CWU Orchestra. Future plans include tours both in the northwest and internationally.

Notes, Texts, and Translations

Chorale

Gloria (1994) Vijay Singh This Gloria is the second movement from Singh's "Mass Opus 1”. The piece is a joyous fanfare and explores some interesting harmonic shifts before returning to its

opening thematic statement.

Sub tuum praesidium Bartlomeij Pekiel (? -c1670) Pekiel was one of Poland's leading composers of the middle Baroque era. He served at royal chapels in both Krakow and Warsaw. While the majority of his works are in the Baroque concertato style, this motet is written in Renaissance stile antico fashion. His surviving works include 14 Mass settings and numerous motets.

Bonse Aba (published 2006) arr. Andrew Fischer This traditional sacred song from Zambia is one of the most popular Christian songs of celebration in Africa. This piece can be performed by any combination of voices.

O Nata Lux (2004) Tom Porter Contemporary composer Tom Porter writes frequently for educational groups and has a gift for beautiful melodies. This sacred song of praise (O Blessed Light) features a lovely piano accompaniment and flowing lines in both men's and women's parts.

Rockin' Jerusalem (published 2002) arr. Damon Dandridge This traditional spiritual is creatively arranged by Damon Dandridge, featuring large dynamic contrasts, dignified syncopations, and 7-part divisi. Dandridge is rapidly gaining a strong reputation for his work in African-American choral practices and preserving the history of concert spirituals.

Chamber Choir

Heilig Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Heilig is a brief double choir unaccompanied piece. The setting opens with a chain of descending thirds spanning two octaves, before joining in a series of sonorous

antiphonal and chordal exclamations.

Heilig, heilig, heilig ist Gott der Herr Zebaoth Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth: Alle Lande sind seiner Ehre voll. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosianna in der Höh! Hosanna in the highest! Gelobt sei der da kommt Blessed is he that cometh im Namen des Herrn! in the name of the Lord: Hosianna in der Höh. Hosanna in the highest.

Notes, Texts, and Translations continued… Ave Verum Corpus William Byrd (c. 1540-1623)

This Latin motet, considered by some to be Byrd's finest work, is a masterpiece of text setting.

Ave, verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine: Hail true body, born of the Virgin Mary: vere passum, immolatum Truly suffered and were sacrificed in cruce pro homine: on the cross for humankind. cuius latus perforatum whose pierced side flowed unda fluxit et sanguine: with water and blood: esto nobis prægustatum, in mortis examine. Be for us a foretaste in the trial of death. O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu Fili Mariæ O tender, O loving, O Jesus son of Mary miserere mei, Amen. Have mercy on me, Amen.

Komm, Jesu, Komm J.S. Bach (1685-1750) JS Bach penned six motets which represent the pinnacle of that genre. The fifth of these is Komm, Jesu, Komm, an 8-minute work set for double choir (SATB, SATB). Bach's skill in conveying the meaning, both emotional and literal, of his texts through his music is unsurpassed. Komm, Jesu, Komm, is no exception. For example, the musical line for the text Die Kraft verschwindt rises to Kraft and falls from there. Der saure weg outlines a jarring diminished seveneth heard in the successive entrances of each of the eight parts. In contrast, Komm, ich will mich dir ergeben, becomes more energetic and hopeful. In the final line of the first stanza – Du bist der rechte Weg – the music dances in 6/8 meter as an extended joyful musical contemplation during which the choirs first pass musical ideas back and forth, before joining together in a jubilant and climactic ending. Komm, Jesu, komm, mein leib ist müde, Come, Jesus, come, my body is weary, die Kraft verschwindt je mehr und mehr, my strength disappears more and more. ich sehne mich nach deinem Friede; I long for Your peace; der saure Weg wird mir zu schwer! the bitter path becomes too difficult. Komm, ich will mich dir ergeben; Come! I will give myself to You;

Du bist der rechte Weg, You are the right path, die Wahrheit und das Leben the truth and the life. Chorale Chorale Drum schließ ich mich in deine Hände So I give myself into Your hands und sage, Welt, zu gute Nacht! and say to the world, good night. Eilt gleich mein Lebenslauf zu ende, My life’s path is hurrying towards its end, ist doch der Geistwohl angebracht. my soul is well-prepared Er soll bei seinem Schöpfer schweben, it hovers next to its Creator, weil Jesus ist und bleibet Jesus is and remains der wahre Weg zum Leben.as the true way to life.

Lo, how a Rose E’er Blooming Praetorius arr. Jan Sandstroem Swedish arranger Sandstroem has taken a favorite carol and given it a new and fresh twist. The traditional carol is set against a soundscape of tonal clusters, giving the words a sense of awe and breathless admiration.

Gamelan (1979) R. Murray Schafer Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer's Gamelan is an unaccompanied piece for voices which are asked to produce bell sounds evocative of a Javenese gamelan "orchestra". Schafer's text consists of simple syllables emulating the exotic percussion instruments. Specifically, each of the pitches of the 5 note scale is assigned a syllable – deng dong, dung, dang, and ding.
