The nights may be drawing in and the days a little darker but here at FTH we have loads of little gems that will bring some sparkle to the winter. From the heart-warming sounds of Peter Morrison and friends in ‘Scotland on Parade’ right through to the bizarre but extremely funny ‘Circus of Horrors’, via ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Abbamania’ we hope that you’ll find something here to tempt you.

Our Christmas shows for wee bairns and big bairns is Falkirk Children’s and Youth and Theatre’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ - the Disney version with a whole load of dazzling costumes, songs and dancing. On the run up to the big day join in the festive mood with Todd Gordon in his Sinatra inspired ‘Winter Wonderland’ or join us for some classic seasonal films without which Christmas would be incomplete: ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ and ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’. Great for all generations of the family and remember to take advantage of our cuppa and mince pie ticket deal at the matinee on the 22nd December!

If you prefer your celebrations loud and lively then don’t miss the return of the superb ‘Skerryvore’ in a rocking Celtic party.

If you’re new to theatre then why not give ‘Singin’ I’m no a Billy He’s a Tim’, - Coatbridge born Des Dillon’s hit comedy about Old Firm rivalries - a try? It’s a big smack of Glasgow humour with engaging performances which won Scott Kyle The Stage Best Actor at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

There are two brand new shows for families from two of Scotland’s finest companies. Catherine Wheels bring a brand new version of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast in their show ‘Caged’ in April, while ‘By the Seat of Your Pants’ is a side-splitting, clown-style show which will have everyone chortling. And for the school holidays we’ve programmed a film from the master of cinematic clowning, Jacques Tati’s ‘Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday’.

The film programme is full of award season contenders with our pick of the best costume drama, historical epic, comedy and romance… especially romance in fact. Have your hankies at the ready for the powerful romantic drama ‘Love and Other Drugs’, swoon over Javier Bardem and Julia Roberts in ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, and bring someone special to our Valentine’s Day screenings of one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time – ‘The Shop Around the Corner’.

Sticky Kids Christmas Party is an action packed singalong show for 2-6 year olds. The songs are all favourites from the hugely popular Sticky Kids range of CDs but mostly from “Christmas Party with the Sticky Kids”. Anne Butler plays Molly Muddle – the human equivalent of a party popper and Alan Windram plays her good friend Old Macdonald.

Passacaglia – baroque quartet with Julia Golding(soprano) is one of Britain’s best-loved baroque chamber ensembles. For many years the group has enjoyed a reputation for its engaging and charismatic performances, featuring the unique sound of recorders, flutes, viol da gamba and harpsichord.They have received particular acclaim for their thoughtful interpretations of early French repertoire, as well as the enduringly popular music of Handel and Telemann.

Joining him onstage is actress/singer daughter Jackie and two young men who have been setting the heather alight with their virtuoso performances around the country, Scottish fiddler Andy Kane and accordionist Liam Stewart.

Stranded in Congo and threatened with conscription as child soldiers the pair hatch a daring plan to make the 3,000 mile trip across seven countries to the World Cup finals in South Africa. Their journey brings great danger but with that an accumulating number of tag-along companions who join them in their outlandish quest.

Not for nothing has this sweet-natured movie drawn comparisons with the 2008 hit ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ where the infectious spirit and joy at the heart of the film, embodied in Dudu’s charmingly cheerful character, does not shy away from depictions of hardship, injustice and colonial inequity, ultimately lending the heart-warming tale a large amount of integrity and redefining the received, western perception of a maligned continent and people.

And so it passes that Clarence sets about showing George what things would have been like had he never been born…

Corbijn follows the brilliance and success of his feature debut ‘Control’ with this markedly different character-driven thriller starring latter-day matinee idol: George Clooney. The ever-reliable Clooney plays Jack – inscrutable arms expert and occasional assassin, who flees to the Italian countryside and holes up in a small Abruzzo village (familiar as the backdrop from countless 1950s spaghetti westerns) after a particularly messy job. Troubled and weary, Jack is counselled by a perceptive local priest and begins to contemplate a new life for himself, perhaps with one of the two women mysterious and alluring women he encounters.

Whilst bearing the familiar plot trademarks of hit-man wanting to go straight (compare with the recent ’22 Bullets’ or even ‘In Bruges’) this is a far more contemplative piece of work, boasting profundity of tone, artistic vision and arresting camera compositions from photographer-by-trade Corbijn.

A rollicking black comedy loosely based on the exploits of the infamous pair of grave-robbers who made a living supplying cadavers to the centre of medical learning in 19th century Edinburgh. Directed by the man behind comedy hall-of-fame classics ‘The Blues Brothers’ and ‘Trading Places’ and also the seminal comic-horror ‘An American Werewolf in London’ Landis delights once again in a morally playful tone. Pegg (‘Hot Fuzz’, ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and TV’s ‘Spaced’) and Serkis (ever associated with Golem in Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy) were reportedly instructed by Landis to play the dodgy duo like a kind of evil Laurel and Hardy. They are well supported by a true host of British talent including the real villains of the piece: the pompous and self-serving doctors played with relish by Tom Wilkinson and Tim Curry.

A gently resonant film following four seasons in the lives of a contented, good-hearted couple, played (or more accurately: inhabited) by Mike Leigh regulars, Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen. The middle-aged pair go about the well-drawn routines of their married lives in the kitchen, on the allotment, with their grown-up son or entertaining friends. But the lives of at least two of their circle are blighted with dissatisfaction and unhappiness – Mary (Manville) is fragile and drinks to excess to cope with the fear that life is passing her by, and Ken (Wright) is similarly lonely and struggling with his lot.

Like some of Leigh’s best work this aching tale of loneliness and what it means to be happy is revealed through brilliantly telling dialogue and wonderful performances, whilst the sympathetic camera-style of Dick Pope perfectly captures the shifting seasons that are the backdrop to the characters lives.

Jake Gyllenhaal (‘Donnie Darko’, ‘Brokeback Mountain’) plays smooth talking, sex seeking Jamie – slick operator in the high powered world of pharmaceutical sales (selling Viagra, aptly enough). His near infallible charm meets its match with he encounters alluring free spirit Anne Hathaway (‘The Devil Wears Prada’), who won’t let anyone, or anything tie her down.

The on-screen chemistry between the two stars is palpable in this powerful romantic drama that succeeds in rending the heart whilst supplying plentiful laughs (Oliver Platt is hilarious as Jamie’s sales partner). Director Edward Zick here produces his best, most playful work since the eighties US TV series ‘thirtysomething’ and shares writing credits with Charles Randolph and Marshall Herskovitz (‘Blood Diamond’, ‘Traffic’), coming up with fresh and witty dialogue that bears comparison with Howard Hawks’ screwball comedies.

Set in a lovingly evoked Budapest, Lubitsch’s deliciously delicate comedy follows employees of the gossip-ridden Matuschek and Company family store and, in particular, two who are at constant loggerheads. James Stewart plays the unfulfilled and earnest Alfred Kralik, opposite Margaret Sullavan as the aspirational and snobbish Klara Novak. The warring pair are meanwhile unaware that they are actually in the throes of a blissful courtship with one another by mail, in an anonymous correspondence.

The director’s fabled ‘touch’ (he also directed Garbo in ‘Ninotchka’) here at its lightest, contributes to what is arguably Hollywood’s most exquisitely romantic film. Look out for Frank Morgan as shop-owner Matuschek – best known as the eponymous ‘Wizard of Oz’. Always avoiding sentimentality (and far superior to the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks vehicle ‘You’ve Got Mail’ which it inspired) this is the perfect film for Valentine’s Day, presented at FTH Cinema in a new bfi (British Film Institute) restoration.

A holiday treat for all the family…

With many new audiences discovering Jacques Tati for the first time thanks to Sylvain Chomet’s lovely homage - ‘The Illusionist’, now is the perfect time to screen one of the maestro’s best-loved films. In his most consistently enjoyable performance, Tati plays the well-meaning but clumsy M. Hulot who is on vacation at a quiet Brittany seaside resort and so devotes himself to enjoyment that he barely notices the comic chaos that follows in his wake. Every gag is timed to perfection and Tati is rightly regarded as the comic heir of silent cinema genius Buster Keaton whose physical technique made ground-breaking use of the cinematic form, with visual pay-offs not dependent on dialogue but rather on frame compositions and camera edits.

With more to offer than the base buffoonery of his imitator Rowan Atkinson’s Mr Bean character, Tati’s film also stands as a satirical assault on the shiny fifties modern world.

On 12th May 1983 Kenny Waters was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole on the testimony of two ex-girlfriends. ‘Conviction’ is the inspirational, true story of Kenny (played by Sam Rockwell – ‘Moon’) and his sister’s unswerving belief in his innocence. Hilary Swank (‘Million Dollar Baby’) is exceptional as his sister Betty Anne, a working mother who, despite being a high-school drop-out, puts herself through school, college and law school in an 18-year quest to free her brother. Swank’s performance is matched by Minnie Driver’s fine supporting playing of her fellow law student, Abra and the trio are tipped as likely to be name-checked in this year’s Oscar buzz.

Courtroom dramas, the wrongly accused and David and Goliath stories are always sure-fire ingredients of cinema drama, and director Goldwyn (who cut his teeth on TV’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Dirty Sexy Money’ and ‘Dexter’) and screenwriter Pamela Gray demonstrate a fine grasp of classic storytelling in this compelling and moving film.

Based on a first-hand account of growing up in East Jerusalem ‘Miral’ is the richly textured, deeply moving account of an intelligent young woman whose personal story is inextricably linked to the political history and social consequences of the Isreali-Palestinian conflict. Freida Pinto (who came to the world’s attention as Latika in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’) plays the central character, consigned to an orphanage as a child and brought up safely inside the Institute’s walls. Initially blind to the troubles that surround her, at the age of 17 she is assigned to teach at a refugee camp where she is awakened to the reality of her people’s struggle. As her romantic involvement with a political activist grows, Miral finds her torn between the fight for the future of her people and the belief that education is the road to peace.

Spanning the period from the birth of the State of Israel in 1948 to the Oslo peace agreement in 1994 director Schnabel (‘The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’) seeks out the humanity and emotional heart at the midst of the countries’ turmoil.

The exciting prospect of a film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s (‘The Remains of the Day’) acclaimed, best-selling novel does not disappoint in the hands of screenwriter Alex Garland (who wrote the publishing phenomenon ‘The Beach’) and director Romanek (music promo director best known for his Johnny Cash/’Hurt’ video and the 2002 feature ’One Hour Photo’).

Kathy (Carey Mulligan) recalls her childhood at a seemingly idyllic boarding school, growing up with her fellow-boarders: Ruth (Keira Knightley) and Tommy. Encouraged in healthy activities, creative outlets and subject to regular medical checks the pupils live a happy if sheltered existence. As graduation to the real world looms nearer they struggle to apprehend a dark secret that hangs over their future. Deep feelings of love, jealousy and betrayal emerge against a delicate and eery sense of strangeness that permeates the action that unfolds.

A high-class costume drama based on the intriguing case of Prince Albert (father of our Queen Elizabeth II) whose nervous stammer made for him an ordeal of royal duties. The exploration of the demands of the new era of mass communication, heralded by the arrival of radio and newsreels, lends a fascinating dramatic focus, complemented by the film’s fresh look at the abdication crisis which threatened the pre-war monarchy.

When he is introduced to eccentric and forthright speech expert Lionel Logue (Rush - ‘Shine’), Prince Albert (Firth) reluctantly embarks with him on a course of therapy. Despite Lionel’s complete lack of regard for royal protocol, an unlikely friendship develops between the unorthodox therapist and the sceptical royal. The film delights in the warm and sympathetic performances of Firth and Rush whose consummate acting skills take centre stage, and they have strong support from an award-winning cast including Helena Bonham Carter, Jennifer Ehle, Guy Pearce, Derek Jacobi and Michael Gambon. Look out also for nine-year-old Ramona Marquez from TV’s ‘Outnumbered’, as Princess Margaret.

Jack ButlerJack Butler are a four-piece indie-funk-dance troupe formed in 2005. After recording their first EP, How’s This For Leverage? they signed to Edinburgh-based Whimsical Records, releasing debut single, Velvet Prose. The band were selected to play at T in the Park in 2006 and have played every major music festival in Scotland including Connect and Rockness.

Roberto Flores Born in Mexico City, Roberto initially studied dentistry before becoming a self taught photographer.

Roberto’s loves to capture pictures that ‘tell a story’ and is inspired by different cultures and their people. He also has a flair for music photography and is proud to be the official band photographer for Stirling’s Jack Butler.

Music has always been one of my passions.

In 2008 I met Liam who plays guitar, lead voice and synth in a band called Jack Butler. We connected instantly through our shared taste of music. They were the first band in Scotland to allow me to come and take photographs at their gigs which I haven’t stopped doing since then.

I believe in Jack Butler not just because our friendship but also because all of them are very talented musicians.

That is why this exhibition was created as a tribute to my passion for music, to the legacy of amazing photographic work created during all this time of me being “The official Jack Butler’s photographer” and for Jack Butler itself.
