What is a flood?

• Flood is the rising of a body of water and it’s overflowing onto normally dry land.

When is a flood most likely to occur?

• There are five different types of floods: periodic flood, flash flood, river floods, coastal floods, and seasonal floods. Periodic and seasonal floods are the most predictable. They return every month, every year, or every two-years. River floods and flash floods are not predictable, they suddenly happen and they often bring not much damage.

What causes a flood?

• Flood happens during heavy rains, when rivers overflow, when ocean waves come on shore, when snow melts too fast, or when dams break.

How can we prevent or be prepared for a flood?

• This disaster can be prevented by putting sacks of sand around the river, by going to higher land, by going away from rivers, by having a good home foundation, and by having a main breaker.

How can you keep yourself safe during a flood?

• Keep an eye on the sky. Watch for signs of rain – not only where you are, but upstream. Have a battery radio, and listen to a local station. Never drive where water is over bridges or roads. All of a sudden the bridges or the road could be washed out. If your car is trapped, get out. Move to higher ground. You may lose your car, but you’ll save your life.

How can we recover from a flood?

• To recover from floods you need to go to the red cross and ask for help. You can even go to church and ask for help too. If you are hurt, go to a hospital. If you have floods insurance they will give you money to fix your house and streets. Plant new trees.
