or Cody Thomson, one of Falcon’s own firefighters, a little danger has always been preferred. Since a small boy five years of age, Cody has been an avid bike racer, learning to handle excitement and danger packaged neatly together.
Little did he know that his years of racing would prepare him for the stress and danger of his current job.
And that served him especially well on Tuesday, July 26 when the recent Waldo Canyon Fire’s devastation had the rest of us watching in horror.
Cody, off-duty on the 26th, was at home watching the fire from a “technological” distance when he got the call. However, instinct told him what was coming before he even picked up the phone.
They needed more help.
Right now, just a few people to man the Falcon station while those in Falcon traveled in to man the Colorado Springs Fire Station 15. But even then, Cody felt that the worst was yet to come. Fifteen minutes after arriving at the Falcon station, his feelings were con-firmed.
Another call—this time men needed on the front line. The fire was gaining strength and quickly devastating everything in its path. Cody and 3 other Falcon firefighters reported to the staging area of Woodmen Rd and I-25, ready to help in whatever way needed. The scene there was chaotic, but inspiring as firefighters from all over the city, state, and even country were arriving to help the city of Colorado Springs. There were numerous police and federal offi-cers. Trucks and manpower arrived from Denver, Arvada, Aurora, Tri-Lakes, Westcliff, and numerous other fire stations and quickly jumped into action.
Cody and those with him were assigned the responsibility of chas-ing and eradicating any spot fires in that immediate area. Right away they found one close by at Woodmen and I-25. Their ad-vantage was the brush truck in which they had come. Designed to reach more secluded areas but handle smaller fires, this brush truck was the perfect weapon for helping these men fight the spot fires that were appearing miles away from the main fire. After 35-40 minutes battling their first spot fire, they were called in even closer to the beast. This time, on site where the true devastation was tak-ing place.
From 7:00 that evening until 10:30 the following morning, Cody and the others bravely fought the raging fire in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood. By that time, measures were desperate. Firefighters were doing whatever possible to save homes. Propane tanks were being ripped from grills and thrown into the street. Decks had to be cut from the homes with a chainsaw. Wooden fences were quickly sawn apart and stacked in the streets. These
men were commit-ted to saving homes, knowing the dev-astation that losing a home can bring. Unfortunately, some homes were beyond saving. From those ones, they sadly had to walk away. But for each one lost, the firefighters renewed their commitment to saving another.
Cody, along with hundreds of other brave men and women, fought tirelessly through the night. Their focus and commitment came regardless of fatigue, hunger, pain or fear. When asked how he handled the fear, Cody nonchalantly responded “You get an adrenaline rush. It just keeps you going. And you know that’s what you have to do.”
And that is how they all feel. These firefighters don’t see their job as anything extraordinary. They see it as their duty, and one they are glad to do. I loved hearing how the Colorado Springs commu-nity and more specifically, the Falcon community, rallied around our firefighters with support and encouragement. Cody said he couldn’t go anywhere without being honked at numerous times, having his meals or groceries paid for, and seeing crowds lining the street to show their gratitude.
The firefighters loved that! It was encouraging. As Cody said “It made it all worth it!”
But I couldn’t help realizing that despite all the validation from our community, these brave men and women still don’t see themselves as heroes.
And that makes them all the more a hero in my book. Their service comes not from some selfish desire for fame or attention, but out of strong character that does what is right, even in the face of danger.
So thank you, firefighters. Thank you for protecting our city, our homes, and our lives. You are our heroes.
