Who doesn’t? The shops fill up with decorations, children start distributing candy canes to each other at school, the Christmas tree goes up and of course you start catching up with neighbours for Christmas parties. When we were kids mum and dad didn’t have a lot of money. They were both hard workers, wage earners with a mortgage and not a lot of spare cash. They used to use Christmas and birthdays as a reason to get us new clothes. Along with a couple of presents at Christmas time we would always get a pile of new clothes. Swimmers, shorts, shirts … basically a whole summer wardrobe. Our cousins would always tease us on Christmas morning at church, ‘Ah, here are the Altmanns in their new clothes!’ because we used to dress up in our latest gear and off to church we would go. We were so proud. After church of course was the family Christmas lunch, we were cold-lunchers at Christmas, other families were hot-lunchers. We did ham and turkey and salad at our place when family came around, when it was our cousin’s turn they did a baked dinner with all the trimmings. But we both did trifle, and lots of it. One of the lovely things that has really developed since I was a child is the way that people decorate their homes with Christmas lights these days. Years ago we just had lights on our Christmas trees, if you were lucky you had flashing ones but mostly they were simple coloured lights. When you drive around the suburbs these days the amounts of amazing Christmas displays you see is mind boggling, it is really one of the things that I love about this time of year. You may not know it but Martin Luther is credited as being the person who first decorated Christmas trees with lights. Legend has it that he was walking home one evening and noticed the snow and icicles on the fir trees glistening in the moonlight and starlight. In those days people used the fir tree as a Christmas symbol but not usually indoors and not usually decorated. Moved by the delicate winter scene, Luther went home that evening, cut down a fir tree, brought it into his home and placed lighted candles in the branches. He maintained that decorating and lighting the Christmas tree served as a reminder that Jesus is the light of the world and he thus began an amazing tradition that even now is repeated each Christmas in the beautifully lit suburbs of our own city. I suppose in this final newsletter of the year I would urge our families to let your light shine this Christmas. Each year though we may not know it we build special Christmas memories for our children, we each have our own special traditions I am sure but lighting the tree is pretty common to all. As you decorate your tree this year take a moment to consider just how special it is that across the globe people just like us are doing the same thing. Together we are remembering and celebrating that most wonderful gift of a light, shining in the darkness, the baby Jesus. Thank you for your continued support of our college this year, it has been another full and rewarding experience for us all. As you let your light shine this year I pray that you remember our great God of love who came to us as a helpless baby in order that we may be his own. May the Lord of Light shine on you this Christmas. Shane Altmann Principal

7 The Lord of LightI love Christmas.

END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS Thank you to our Faith community for joining us to recognize and celebrate the learning journey of our Year 12 students and a year of academic, cultural, service and loyalty and sporting achievements by our Senior School students.

2018 POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY – each Year 5 student has been awarded a position of responsibility and leadership for their time in Year 6 next year. This process has been underway for most of this term and we thank the students for their mature and responsible approach. We certainly look forward to working with these children as our leaders in the Junior School next year. Early in Term 1 we will hold a badge presentation assembly where we will formally induct these children into their roles for the year.

2018 CLASSES – a letter will be sent to all students next week with their class and class teacher for 2018. Please note that it is not possible to change classes. Our staff have spent a large amount of time working on getting the best classes in place for 2018 and we look forward to exciting times ahead. CONGRATULATIONS – Max Boultbee recently competed against 95 other students to gain selection to compete at the States for All Schools Triathlon. Well done Max and we can’t wait to hear how you go in the next stage of competition.

FAREWELL – Mrs Jenner and Mrs Lees. Our College will always carry you with us in all that we do. We give thanks for your incredible heart for God and for Faith. Thank you for always putting your students first and making sure you made a difference to their lives. We wish you every blessing as you begin these exciting new chapters in your lives.

THANK YOU – we would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of our college community for your support and partnership this year. We look forward to an exciting year in 2018, building on the amazing progress we have made this year to make your child’s learning at Faith the absolute best it can be! May God Bless you all this Christmas season.

SPORTS NEWSSECONDARY COLLEGE CAMPUSThe first couple of weeks of Term 1 next year will be extremely busy with GBC sport beginning Saturday, 10 February and our Secondary College Swimming Carnival on Thursday, 1 February. Training for all teams will commence during the second week back at school. Training will also be held on Saturday, 3 February. All training sessions will be used to organise A and B teams in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior competitions for Years 7-12 students. Further information will be made available at the beginning of next year.

In 2018 the College will continue with our Sports Uniform incentive to students and families. This incentive is for students who sign on for a GBC sport for Term 1, 2 and 3. Any students who makes this considerable contribution will receive a 50% discount voucher for sports uniforms at the College shop. This is an excellent opportunity for students and families to become more involved and receive some great discounts on our GBC sports uniforms. Please note that families will not be able to make purchases at the College shop using this discount until they have received confirmation from the College.

SECONDARY COLLEGE SWIM CARNIVAL – THURSDAY, 1 FEBRUARYThis carnival is a great way to start the year for our sports program. It provides opportunities for all students to participate whether it is through the fun House activities and/or the competitive events. From our Inter-House carnival, students will be selected to compete and represent the College at the District and GBC carnivals.

Nominations for the College Inter-House Swimming Carnival will also take place during Week 1 and we will be encouraging as many students as possible to dive in, compete and have some fun on this day.
