Public Office Hours 8.15am -

3.30pm Monday - Friday

From our Principal, John Maguire

Tēnā koutou katoa ngā whānau,

As term three closes, I celebrate and thank all students and staff for your energy, hard work and the tremendous successes we have seen throughout this term across all dimensions of learning and co-curricular activities. As I reflect on the term past, I am reminded of the privileged world in which we live and the extensive opportunities available to our students. From classroom based learning to learning in the outdoors,

winter sport to dance, theatre and so much more, the school is a hive of activity. In amongst all this, I am always impressed with our students' capacity to recognise the needs of others and willingness to engage in social action to serve others. The ‘food and can drive’ has united our students in the beauty of generosity and aroha for others. St Vincent de Paul were grateful to receive the extensive range of items donated through this student action, they will distribute all goods to those in need in the community.

Who would have believed that 150mm of snow would fall in the ranges this week? Our year 12 students on Journey at Canaan Downs were surprised to wake up to snow on the ground on Thursday morning. Due to the

weather conditions and cold temperatures, Whenua Iti Outdoors transferred our students and staff to the much warmer Marahau outdoors centre to complete the Journey program. Throughout the week the year 12 students reflected on servant leadership and their capacity to lead within the College as year 13 students in 2020. Applications for the leadership positions are now open and we look forward to appointing these roles early in term 4.

Thank you to our student health leaders Caitlin Roberts and Levi Smith on their leadership of Mental Health Awareness Week. Through the theme of ‘Explore your way to wellbeing’ – ‘Whāia te ara hauora, Whitiora’ students and staff explored experiences and actions that make us feel good and uplift our wellbeing. Thank you also to our Student Counselor Kate Sheldon and our Health Services Team for the care and support offered to our students within the College each day.

I congratulate Year 10 student Katie Herd on being duly elected by her peers to the role of Student Representative on the Board of Trustees 2020. We wish Katie every success in her new role. I wish to acknowledge and thank Lauren Robinson, Cherry Moore and Jesse Sherlock for their courage and confidence in standing for election and I wish each of them well for further opportunities to serve and con-tribute to the College.

At assembly this week we applauded Year 12 student Alfie Linn and wished him every success as he heads off to compete in Table Tennis at the INAS (International Federation for Athletes with Intellectual Impairments) Global Games in Brisbane at the start of next term. Competing in these games is an outstanding achievement for Alfie as he continues to pursue his passion in sports. We look forward to welcoming him home from the games and learning of his experiences and success. Go Alfie, the College is behind you!

Best wishes to all students and staff for a well-earned holiday and thank you to our parent community and friends of the College for your wonderful support. I particularly wish our boarding students safe travel as they return to their towns and homes to be with family throughout the holiday break.

God Bless, Ngā mihi nui, John Maguire

"Faith Facts" Week 10 - Term Three

Year 13 Student Survey

The National Centre for Religious Studies , the Centre for Science and Citizenship, and The Nathaniel Centre wish to understand young peoples’ thinking about some significant issues of our times. To do this, they are inviting all Year 13 students in Catholic schools across the country to take part in a short, anonymous online survey called “What Is Your Stand?” Each question in the survey outlines a particular issue and asks the student where they stand on this issue. They are then asked to provide reasons for their stance.

The results of the surveys will be used to improve the national Catholic Religious Education Curriculum. The results will also provide insights into the ways that young people are responding to the world in which they find themselves and the ethical issues that arise here. The survey is the first step of a larger project in which the researchers will explore (via focus groups) how young people are conceptualising and navigating the ethical challenges with which they are confronted.

From the Sports Desk ... Congratulations to:

Para swimmer Helen McKay, who won Bronze in the 50M Breaststroke, 50M Freestyle and 100M Freestyle, and Silver in the 50M Butterfly at the recent NZSS Swimming Championships held in Hamilton. Well done Helen!

Badminton player Westley Yang, who joined three other local students to form a Waimea combined badminton team that competed at the Yonex NZSS Badminton Championships held in Wellington during tournament week. Westley and his teammates claimed silver in Division two of the event by finishing second overall. Well done Westley on this brilliant team effort.

Thank you to all parents, guardians and friends of Garin who helped with term three sports activities. Whatever your role, be it coach, driver, manager, sideline supporter or self-appointed nutritionist, thank you for investing in our students and our college community. We trust you will enjoy a well earned rest over the holidays and hope to see you back on deck when the summer codes kick off next term.

1st XI Mixed Hockey Team 2019

During Tournament week the 1st XI Mixed Hockey Team went to Blenheim to compete in the South Island Secondary School’s Mixed Tournament. We left Nelson full of excitement and energy and couldn’t wait to play our first game against Hamilton Christian School (HCS) the follow-ing day. We were absolutely fired up when we heard the starting whistle and managed to keep the score at 1-1 at half time. Unfortu-nately, HCS got two penalty corners in the last quarter upon which they scored, ending the game in 3-1. So it was time for Mr Kersten’s bun and banana special along with his magic “whey protein” drink. As we drove back to the motel spirits remained high and we were now focused on the next game later in the day against Mount Aspiring. Despite playing a great game of hockey and Rilee McCrae scor-ing two goals we went down 3-2. On Tuesday, we played against Rodney College. We quickly put two in the back of the net with Julia Kersten and Antony Lam scoring two blinders. However, despite Garin dominating the play, Rodney came back with 2 goals ending the game in a draw, 2-2. We had the bun and banana special to look forward to after the game. The following day we took on Naenae College. Alisha Lewis put us on top first with a penalty stroke in the first quarter. This got us all very fired up, particularly Billy Powick who then got a few breakaways and managed to score 2 goals shortly after. We ended up winning that game 3-0 which we were all very happy with. To top that off, Mr Stock and Mr Kersten took us to Picton for the evening where we went out and had burgers and chips for dinner. What a great day! Then there was Thursday. The day of the infamous ‘Kersten quiz’. Something everyone was looking forward too. But first we played Naenae College again, and again coming out with a 2-0 win during 8 second shootouts. We had our buns and bananas and went back to the cabins to shower and get ready for the quiz. Aside from the Hockey this ended up be-ing a highlight of the tournament for many and with good reason. We had an absolute blast! On Friday we got up early, packed our stuff and went down to the turf one last time to play against Wakatipu. Seeing as this was our last game for some of us we gave it our ab-solute all, leaving it all on the field, and it paid off. We played an absolutely awesome game of hockey and came out with a good win over Wakatipu 4-2. Sure enough, before we even got off the turf, we were already being handed bun’s and bananas by Mr Kersten. What a way to wrap an absolutely amazing week of tournament!

Overall for the Tournament we placed 5th.

Top of the South Readers Cup Sept 26th

On Thursday Mrs Ditzel took 2 teams of year 9 students to compete in the annual Top of the South Readers Cup event hosted at Nayland College. This is the second year that the librarians in the area have run this event, which is a quiz on 6 specific books that the students read in advance. Thanks to generous spon-sorship, every member of the 13 teams competing took home at least one new book, and many took home more! The students commented: We went to Readers Cup. It was an interesting experience. I was not at all what I expected but it was fun. It was only the second Readers Cup event but there were lots of schools there. It was a fun, enjoyable experience. Everyone was very friendly & helpful. Great teamwork! Our 2 teams were the Power Ranger Bystanders & The Crayons. I really enjoyed it. It was a great experience. We may not have come first but we had plenty of fun. It was a lot of fun and I wish we could go again next year.
