Social media and constant communication on cell phones spreads information very quickly and sometimes the information is distorted. The following communication was sent via Constant Contact on November 20. It also was in the bulletin on November 24. The article is self-explanatory. When the situation of people venting without knowing the facts arises, we ask that you use the information below to support YOUR CHURCH. For reasons given, the decision was the best decision for Faith Whitehall. Unfortunately, as stated, the decision was very detrimental to teachers and parents who were counting on Growing Hearts opening and for that we are very sorry.

FAITH EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH FAITH WHITEHALL: GROWING HEARTS LEARNING CENTER

With the closing of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Catasauqua, the Day Care Center housed there for over 30 years was without a home. Faith Whitehall opted to utilize their facilities to partner with the Day Care to provide ongoing care for the children. This decision was driven by following the church’s Mission Statement, “We are an open and caring community” and Church Council’s desire to bring young families to Faith which may infuse new younger members. There have been many hurdles to clear to achieve this transition - Whitehall Township approvals, clearing space, moving a truckload of items from St. Paul’s, development of a new identity and establishing upgraded goals to provide a quality learning environment. After seven months of tirelessly working to achieve the quality standards sought by Faith Whitehall, we feel that the goals desired cannot be achieved in a timely basis. The time it has taken from the closing of St. Pauls to complete the opening at Faith has significantly eroded enrollment. As a result, the duration of time to achieve breakeven financially may be two years or more. Further, this is also a time of significant transition at Faith Whitehall as the Call Committee works diligently with the synod to search for a new pastor. Therefore, Church Council has taken the decision to not proceed with opening Growing Hearts Learning Center at this time. We are truly sorry that so many Faith members have worked diligently to open a quality Learning Center only to disappoint numerous families as they waited for the transition to be fulfilled. We wish them well as they seek new facilities for their children.

Page 3: FAITH EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH …After seven months of tirelessly working to achieve the quality standards sought by Faith Whitehall, we feel that the goals desired cannot be achieved

Further, we thank the staff and teachers, who have worked side by side with us in this transitional phase. Since notifying the staff, teachers and parents last night and today, Faith Whitehall is receiving some negative comments on social media and telephone conversations. While we understand the frustrations with the decision, the decision was made with the best interests of Faith in our minds and hearts. We ask and pray for your support as mutual members at Faith. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

CONGREGATION MEETING Sunday, December 15, 2019

The congregation meeting to elect Church Council members and approve the 2020 church budget will be held on Sunday, December 15 at 9:15 am in Blacker Hall. A light continental breakfast will be served. This will allow those attending the 8:00 am service time to move downstairs and enjoy some refreshments. Those attending the 10:30 service can come early have refreshments and attend the meeting before church. This is an important meeting as we elect leaders of the church for the next three years under the leadership of a new pastor. Further, the budget provides parameters for income and expenses for 2020. So, we ask that YOU make every effort to attend, vote, provide input or ask questions for YOUR CHURCH.

We will have two worship services

8:00 am & 10:30 am

December and January Call Committee Update

The Call Committee is finalizing the information on the Ministry Site Profile with the help of Synod. The responses from our 5 question questionnaire are being entered, the Vitality Survey data is electronically tabulated and also included in the profile. Our hope is that possible candidates will be able to access Faith’s Parish Study Guide before the beginning of the new year. We are looking forward to a visit from the Bishop to explain the next steps in the process. We hope to have the date of that meeting as soon as possible.

We wanted to share seven new questions added to the profile by Synod last month for all Call Committees to answer. They summarize the major themes that will help a candidate decide if they would like to apply to FELC to lead us into the new decade. Please take a few minutes and review the questions. The focus on our ministry, missions, community involvement, and ability to work together as a congregation are major areas the Parish Study Guide covers for candidates.

Seven Reflections on Ministry and Context for the Ministry Site Profile

1. What key issues or concerns of our church and society are reflected in the ministry that is centered in your congregation or organization?

2. How do the stewardship practices and allocation of financial resources of the congregation or organization reflect your priorities for mission?

3. In what ways is the membership of your congregation or organization similar or different from the people of the neighborhood in which you are located?

4. Identify the three most significant or formative events in the history of your congregation or organization.

5. Describe the way the congregation or organization is currently involved in community and ecumenical partnerships.

6. Has your congregation or organization had significant conflict in recent history and, if so, what have you learned from that experience?

7. Describe your physical facilities: construction date, purpose, capacity, date of last renovation, any deferred maintenance, and any plans for upgrading.

If you have any questions, please contact Tim Lucas at: [email protected] or 201-370-4606.

Thank you for your prayers and support – Yours in Faith - The Call Committee

A TRIBUTE TO OUR WONDERFUL PASTOR

Pastor Michael Bodnyk became our new pastor on February 2, 1995 (on Groundhog Day). We had been without a permanent pastor since December of 1993 when Pastor George entered his eternal home after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Pastor Roy Meck graciously led us through some very difficult times during the next year until Pastor Bodnyk was selected as our new shepherd. Pastor Bodnyk was not a stranger to our congregation since some of his relatives had been members. We were very happy Pastor Mike accepted the call to Faith and that he Sandy and Michael John would be joining us.

At first, I think it was a bit of an adjustment for both Pastor Bodnyk and me since he was not used to working with an office staff and here

we were with our bulletin and newsletter deadlines, etc. because we had ladies coming in on Friday mornings at 9:00 am to fold the bulletins. I understand that sometimes when he was Pastor at Dinkey Memorial the Sunday bulletin didn’t get done until Saturday night – because he did it himself “when the spirit moved him”. We did have to work on the “deadline” issue.

Pastor Mike had a great sense of humor which helped to make our days brighter. When he first joined us we had an intercom system between our offices, but he found that with his booming voice it was faster to yell over to us. About 2 years later, a new state of the art intercom system was installed that could be heard throughout the whole church and the basement area. Pastor Mike loved that. He could contact us no matter where we were AT ANY TIME, just at the push of a button – and sometimes at the most inopportune time for us. We also learned he enjoyed country music when he played his CD’s through the sound system.

As we all know, Pastor Mike was a very loving, caring, compassionate person that was blessed with many gifts he willingly shared with not only members of his congregation but with anyone who’d come to him with any kind of problem. If an emergency arose we could contact him any hour, day or night. There are so many times people would come in off the street to the church for help, and Pastor was not one to turn them away. Jackie, Sue, and I all witnessed how he helped others in many different ways – counseling, guiding them by connecting them to agencies where they could get ongoing help, giving food we had at the church, giving vouchers for lodging, gas, or transportation, and the list goes on and on.

In August, of 1996 Pastor Bodnyk along with three of our members attended a three day leadership conference in Philadelphia. One of the workshops was on the importance of prayer in every decision that is made at Faith and in our lives, which we took to heart, and on March 4, 1997 a Prayer Group was started which has been meeting every Tuesday morning to this day. Pastor Bodnyk made it a priority, and was with us most of the time when his schedule allowed. We always looked forward to him being with us and he has been sorely missed since his illness no longer allowed him to attend. We shared many happy times together and learned a lot from him.

Page 10: FAITH EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH …After seven months of tirelessly working to achieve the quality standards sought by Faith Whitehall, we feel that the goals desired cannot be achieved

Pastor Bodnyk initiated the Vicar Program at Faith and was a mentor for twelve vicars, each of them being under his guidance for a year on their way to becoming ordained ministers. We can only imagine how many lives were affected after all these vicars were ordained and moved on with their ministries.

There were many changes here at Faith during Pastor’s ministry with us. In the church office he gently pushed us farther into the computer age with the introduction of new programs and help from many IT people through the years. He enjoyed the ability to reach out to the congregation through e-mail and “Constant Contact”. He wanted to be in touch with his people. Physical changes included an elevator, a huge addition to the church office, addition of The Gathering Place, and the addition of a Memorial Garden. These changes required a lot of time, planning, patience on the part of Pastor and so many others.

Pastor enjoyed being part of so many ministries at Faith. He loved to cook and bake and he and Sandy were the driving force behind the food and refreshments prepared for the craft fairs each year. They had lots of experience coming from Dinkey Memorial where they were involved with preparing food for the fairs in which they participated. Pastor was known for his coconut custards, which, many times, he would come to the church to bake the night before. He was always with us, ready to “pitch in” wherever needed and we had so much fun working together.

Pastor Bodnyk was a very good leader and encouraged Team Ministry (both young and old) to reach out and cultivate the skills God has given each one of us. Through his sermons and in other ways he wanted each one of us to be a Partner in Ministry, work together, and expand our horizons. So, we must remember this as we go forward in the days and years to come.

We can’t thank you enough, Pastor Bodnyk, for all you have done for us! We know you are at peace with the Lord and have received a “Well done, you good and faithful servant” when you were greeted in heaven. We all love you and miss you!

children in Dallas, Boston, or NYC, she can be found outdoors with her golden retriever Dexter or kayaking with Harold on Lake Wallenpaupack. Deb would be happy to join the church council to serve the members of the church once again in this role.
