Class Placement Process – Creating Classrooms for 2019-2020 As our school staff begins organizing classes for September 2019, it is valuable for parents to understand the process for student placement decisions. The ultimate goal in all of our efforts is to provide an optimum learning environment for our students. Classroom teachers, special education as well as the principal and vice principal are involved in the class placement process. A great deal of time and consideration goes into placing students in the most positive learning environment possible, given each individual students’ skills, knowledge , attitude and work habits. Classes at each grade level are formed using a variety of important criteria such as:

Class size consistent with Board and Ministry guidelines (e.g. Not more than 20 students in primary grades, with the exception of kindergarten);

Gender balance in each class; A range of performance levels within each class, taking into account the skills, knowledge,

attitudes and work habits of individual students; Placement of Special Education students that facilitates the programs required for these students; Promoting positive social relationships while minimizing unproductive associations.

Please note that there will be combined classes in the school for the 2019-2020 school year. Often parents have new and/or important information to share about their child which lends assistance to class placement decisions. Please use the following guidelines when sharing information for our consideration:

Positive Social Relationships (students who are positive learning partners); Learning style (independent, small group, need for teacher direction…); Student interests (sports, arts, reading….); and Other Considerations (e.g. special education)

Parent input that is received in writing to the attention of Mrs. Maar prior to April 19th, 2019 will be considered (and shared) during placement meetings. Please avoid naming a teacher as staffing can vary. Please also be advised that while such input is valued, it cannot drive class placement decisions since school-wide limitations and a variety of other factors will, at times, take precedence. Final decisions regarding student placements remain the responsibility of the Principal and the school staff. Ministry mandates on class size will impact class placements into September. As a result, we will, regretfully, be unable to share class placement information with families prior to school opening, September 3rd , 2019. Thank you for partnering with us in this very important task.

Unfortunately, we have had a number of individuals parking their cars in the drop off and pick up area which results in traffic congestion at entrance and dismissal times. Of particular concern is the increased hazards for students trying to make their way safely to the sidewalk. Please review the information below which was shared at the beginning of the year. Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

Keeping Our Students Safe Student Drop Off and Pick Up Safety in the Parking Lot and School Yard As an environmentally focused school our hope is that our students walk to school. If students need to be driven to school please follow the expectations below in order to keep our students safe: DROP OFF AND PICK UP The front bus loop is for buses only. No cars should enter the bus loop at any time. The drop off and pick up for students is on the East side of the school, markings are in yellow on the pavement. Parents should use this entrance, drop students off and follow this around to the exit which is clearly marked. If parents wish to walk their students to the school they should park in the parking lot and walk their children in to the school doors At no time is parking allowed in the Drop Off/Pick Up Area beside the school SUPERVISION Staff will be on duty to meet students arriving by bus as well as leaving at the end of the day Staff will be on duty in the student drop off and pick up area to meet students as they arrive. Kindergarten staff will make sure that kindergarten students are also met as they arrive in the student drop off area. With appreciation,

Jill Maar Derek Totten Pat Best Diane Carlson Principal Vice Principal Admin Assistant Admin Assistant
