AIRWAY NEW WHIDBEY GOLF CLUB F S November 2016 Vol. 36 No. 11 Presidents Comments by Mike Prewitt October has been a busy month for the golf club managers and your Board of Trustees as we finished all of our deliberations re- garding the 2017 budget. At the Share- holders Annual Meeting on October 27 th , we presented both how we did this year and the plan to finance the budget in 2017. I would characterize 2016 as a year of continuing the fis- cal stability created by the 2015 re- finance into this year. We were able to maintain an overall balanced budg- et even though the restaurant strug- gled due to chef turnover the first half of the year. However, outside of the budget, we had to rely on our capital reserve account to make up $40,000 in unplanned capital expenses - $30,000 for the back nine irrigation pump controller and $10,000 for kitchen equipment. The capital re- serve account functioned as envi- sioned but we have depleted it from $65,000 down to $33,000. So for 2017, we have included $36,000 in capital savings to replen- ish the reserve account. In addition we included the following new ex- penses, $9,000 for manager and chef raises, $23,800 for a full year of re- financed mortgage principle, and $6,000 for a part time assistant for the club manager. After scrubbing each budget area, the 2017 budget was still underfunded by about $81,000. The board recommended and the shareholders agreed with the following items to balance the 2017 budget: 1) a dues increase of $25 per month prorated from single share- holders to increase revenue by $52,500; 2) a January assessment of $100 prorated from single sharehold- ers to increase revenue by $17,750; 3) an increase in cart storage fees by $5 per month to increase revenue by $4,656; and 4) a credit card usage surcharge of 2% to offset expenses of $6,000. These items all improve our ability to balance future budgets and the board has agreed future as- sessments should only be considered to replenish our reserves, to pur- chase major equipment, or for capital expenses. We also announced the results of the candidates running for 3 year terms on the board. Mike Prewitt and Ronnie Wright were selected to con- tinue on the board and Ron Coleman and Bill Johnson were selected as new board members. After the annu- al meeting the new board members selected the following officers for next year: President – Mike Prewitt; Vice President – Todd Krantz; Treasurer – Roger Pierce; Secretary – Ronnie Wright. Committee Chairs for 2017 are: Finance – Roger Pierce; Golf Activities – Todd Krantz; Greens and Grounds – TJ Kubisiak; House – Ronnie Wright; Membership – Ron Colemen; Water Mitigation – Bill Johnson. The Committee Chairs would like to have more member rep- resentation on their committees, if you have any interest please contact the appropriate chairman. The LadiesClub also selected their officers for 2017 and they are: President – Marlene Boe; Vice Presi- dent – Linda Haslund; Treasurer – Sandra Shelley; Secretary – Jean Congdon. By the way, led by the La- diesClub contribution, we have col- lected about $5,000 in donations for the new carpet for the restaurant and bar. Well done, the goal is on the or- der of $12,000 to $14,000. The course continues to be in beautiful shape. The fairways are still firm enough for carts and the greens are rolling smooth and have re- mained at an average speed that all can enjoy. Ten Leland Cypress trees and eight English Laurel bushes have been planted behind and to the left of #13 green to eventually act as a screen for the house and cars. Thanks to Oly for digging the holes with the auger and David Acton, John McMahon, TJ Kubisiak, Ray Ras- mussen, and Mike Prewitt for the vol- unteer planting effort. Thanks to Keith Larson for the huge effort in roto- tilling and leveling the ground to the right of the cart path on hole #14. This was necessary because this peat based area became so uneven it became very difficult to mow this rough. Finally, thanks to Keith Larson and Leif Haslund (with collection help from Tom King) for pressure washing and repainting all of the tee box benches. The benches are quite old, but they sure look nice now. Please welcome the following new members: Wayne McKinney as a single shareholder; Robert Frizelle as a social member; Sam Hall, Mat- thew Johnson, and Kaitlyn McInroy as military members; and Emory Har- per and Allie Gagnon as military fami- ly members. We welcome all of you to Whidbey Golf Club. Finally, I am always open to any suggestions or concerns from our WGC members. I will try to answer your questions or have the board or managers deal with any concerns or suggestions in a timely manner. You can contact me by email at [email protected] or text or call me on my cell phone at 303-565-7874 or just talk to me when you see me at the club. If you are not receiving peri- odic email from the club please check your spam folder or check with Arik in the business office that we have your correct email. I hope to see you in November.

President’s Comments by Mike Prewitt

October has been a busy month for the golf club managers and your Board of Trustees as we finished all of our deliberations re-garding the 2017 budget. At the Share-

holders Annual Meeting on October 27

th, we presented both how we did

this year and the plan to finance the budget in 2017. I would characterize 2016 as a year of continuing the fis-cal stability created by the 2015 re-finance into this year. We were able to maintain an overall balanced budg-et even though the restaurant strug-gled due to chef turnover the first half of the year. The Super Speaks Out By Harold “Oly” Olsen

Ladies Club by Diane Pierce

We have finished our regular season play, but I hope to see some of you on the course when you have a chance.

At our October meeting the 2017 officers were elected. Congratulations to Marlene Boe, president; Linda Haslund, vice president; Jean Congdon, secretary; and Sandra Shelley, treasurer. Thank you to those who signed up to organize our luncheons and special tournaments. Pam Smith has agreed to be the chairman for the Ladies’ Invitational. So despite our small membership, we are going full speed ahead.

Thank you to those who have donated to the fund to pur-chase new carpet for the clubhouse. It was great to see that fund get going. We are almost half way to our goal.

Greetings!

Wet weather is back! With that there will be the inevitable

Red or Black flags limiting cart traffic on turf. There will also be

the little yellow stakes next to areas that are bare from wheel

traffic, we used them with success last year. Another way cart

drivers can help out is to keep all four tires on path as much as

possible. The other weather issue is frost delays, the Pro shop

will be putting out emails notifying when the course is ex-

pected to be open for play. As always we will get you out to

play as soon as possible.

The crew has been working hard this fall on cleaning and installing new drains in typically wet areas. We installed 2 large drains on 11 and will be installing dry wells on 6 and 8. Several drains were inspected, repaired and cleaned on 1 but more work is required as it is still too wet.

Membership Corner This month’s Membership Corner provides highlights from the Membership Report that was given

at the Annual Membership Meeting on October 27th

to inform many of you who were not in attendance.

Thanks to all the Membership Committee members – Vice Chair T. J. Kubisiak, Club General Man-

ager Arik Dahlen, John Bates, Ron Coleman, Linda Latham and John Geragotelis.

The following are some 2016 membership initiatives:

1. One Year Contract - All new memberships with the exception of active duty military sign a

one-year contract to endeavor to give some more stability to the Club’s budget and financial

status.

2. April Holland Happening Booth – WGC had a successful booth at Holland Happening for

Saturday and Sunday. The booth advertised and provided various Club memberships and

promotion specials, promoted junior golf camps and lesson opportunities as well as noted

open play times and costs. There was a putting game to win an entry in a drawing for a free

two-month golf promotional membership or a free dinner for two at the WGC. The Oak Har-

bor High School Boys and Girls Golf Team members assisted with the putting contest. Leif

Haslund as well as Ron Coleman and T.J. Kubisiak plus wives helped Tom Ford man the

booth.

3. New Seasonal Peak Social Membership – Board approved a new seasonal peak social

membership to accommodate social members who are “snowbirds”. Membership requires

applicants to sign a two-year contract, pay social dues for six months each year as well as

two quarters of food minimum each year. One couple signed up immediately.

4. Membership Promotions – Both a golf and social two-month membership promotion

were used in conjunction with the Holland Happening Booth and again this fall to introduce

potential long term members to WGC. The golf promo cost $299 for two months and the two-

month social promo cost $50 with a $25 gift certificate for use in the restaurant. Six of the

nine promos that were sold resulted in three full time golf (two shareholders) and three

social members. A golf promotion shareholding special is ongoing with a one-year

contract for $500 share cost and a $250 pro shop credit. Seven new shareholders were

gained from the shareholder promo.

5. 10 Play Golf Punch Card - The Board recently approved the elimination of the 10 Play

Golf Punch Card because it was not achieving the goal of introducing potential members to

WGC golf and facilities, then converting them to long term members. In fact, some individuals

were dropping their memberships and using a series of 10 Play Golf Punch Cards to play

regularly instead.

6. New Member/Long Term Member Picture/Bios – Endeavored to get a brief bio/picture

on new members and one long term member to put on the Membership Bulletin Board and in

the WGC Monthly Newsletter to help members get to know each other better.

Happy Holiday Season Everyone,

Our season is winding down and many of our members are heading down south to enjoy the warmer

weather. We wish you a safe trip and an enjoyable winter season. For those of us who are going to stick

around and spend the holiday season with us please be sure to look at our calendar. Here are a few note-

worthy things that have happened recently and some things that are coming up.

2016 Island Cup

2016 marked the second year of the Island cup against Camaloch Golf Club and their year to host.

Points were accumulated throughout the season in the exchanges and the top 12 players qualified to play

on October 7th-8

th. The teams played a best ball match on the front nine and an alternate shot format on

the back nine on Friday the 2nd

. The following morning were the singles matches which resulted in a

Camaloch Victory (14 ½ - 9 ½). Next year we will be back here at Whidbey where we hope to gain the

trophy back.

2016 ISLAND CUP TEAM

Qualifying WGC Players (In order that they qualified)

Steve Robinson, Maynard Bos, Gary Boonstra, Alan Berndt, Bill Johnson, Frank Murphy, Leif Haslund,

Glenn Smith, Craig McCaul, Michael Prewitt, Dave Acton, TJ Kubisiak

Apple Cup 2-Man

November 19, 10:00am Shotgun

This tournament requires two players per team (ladies included). Each team will be playing for brag-

ging rights as a Cougar or a Husky. They will also be competing in a two person best ball at the same

time. Last year the Cougars finally prevailed after three straight losses to make it Huskies-3 and Cougars-

1. You can make teams of Cougars, Huskies or have a mixed team. There is also an option to be undecid-

ed or support another college. All four years have been a blast and we are hoping to build this into a

packed annual tournament. Grab your alumni and come out to support your team no matter what the col-

lege.

Long & Wrong Scramble

January 14th

, 10:00am Shotgun

This is a 5th tournament that will test everyone’s ability. “What is a Long & Wrong Scramble?” It’s a

scramble like no other! The “long” is where the tees are placed and the “wrong” is where the pins are

placed. The tees are going to be as far back as possible and the pins will be in places that you wouldn’t

normally call fair. Put together a team of 4 and come out to see a whole new course. There will be some

shorter tees for the seniors and women as well.

Christmas Sale

Friday, December 16th

This sale will be our final sale of the year and is a tradition here at Whidbey Golf & Country Club.

Aside from the great deals you can find on everything in the shop, you will experience a festive Christmas

atmosphere where you can grab holiday drinks and snacks. It’s a great time for all of us and there is al-

ways someone there to mingle with. Even if you don’t plan to buy anything please feel free to come by and

have a drink on us and chat for awhile.
