Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium Table

Purpose

In this document the valid Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium information is published. Fairtrade payers and conveyors should refer to this document for details of the relevant Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium levels, and ensure that they are in compliance with these. Producers should also ensure that they are informed about current price and premium levels for their products.

Fairtrade International also publishes Generic Fairtrade Trade Standards and product standards, which complement and add specific requirements to the Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium information.

Structure

The Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium information is presented in table format. The columns specify the specific product standard, product, quality, form, characteristics, country/ region, producer scope, price level, unit, quantity, currency, Fairtrade Minimum Price, Fairtrade Premium and date of validity, where applicable.

Geographical scope: Fairtrade Minimum Prices and Fairtrade Premiums are set at either country specific, regional or global level. An overview of the geographical regions referred to in the Fairtrade Minimum Price and Fairtrade Premium table is published on the Fairtrade International website under http://www.fairtrade.net/our-standards.html.

In China, producers can only be certified against the Standard for Small Producer Organizations. Contract Production and Hired Labour set-ups cannot be certified as Fairtrade in China.

Companies in China can be certified as traders for all Fairtrade products except cotton. Only under the Fairtrade Cotton Sourcing Program can companies processing cotton in China be “Fairtrade verified” and the Price and Premium payer “Fairtrade certified” for cotton.

Particularities: For some products marked with an asterisk in the column “special price terms”, special price and payment terms apply. These are published in the Product Trade Standards (Part C of the relevant product standards) which need to be consulted in conjunction with this table.

Quantity: each Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium refers to the specific quantity indicated in the respective column. If the volume unit employed in the contract differs from the quantity given in the Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium table, then the Minimum Price and/or Fairtrade Premium to be paid can be adjusted pro-rata.

Monitoring of amendments

Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International e.V. reserves the right to amend Fairtrade Standards in accordance with Fairtrade International's Standard Operating Procedures (http://www.fairtrade.net/setting_the_standards.html). Requirements of Fairtrade Standards may be added, deleted, or otherwise modified. Those who have to meet Fairtrade Standard s are required to monitor pending and finalized revisions on Fairtrade International’s website.

Fairtrade Certification ensures the compliance with Fairtrade Standards. Revision of Fairtrade Standards may lead to a change in the requirements of Fairtrade Certification. Those who wish to be certified or have already undergone certification are required to monitor pending and finalized certification policies and compliance criteria on FLO-CERT’s website http://www.flo-cert.net.

Definitions

Commercial Price: For some products, no Fairtrade Minimum Price exists. The paid price is a negotiated price between the seller and the buyer.

Quick Entrance is the name of a procedure allowing new products in existing categories to enter Fairtrade without Fairtrade minimum price, only with a Fairtrade premium, during one full annual production and trading season. Meanwhile the paid price is a negotiated price between the seller and the buyer. The Fairtrade premium is paid in addition of the negotiated price. Sellers and buyers are explicitly asked to ensure that the negotiated price covers the costs of sustainable production (COSP).

After one full annual production and trading season thanks to the Quick Entrance, producers are asked to feedback data to the pricing unit of Fairtrade International. Currently, for almost all Herbs and Spices, this rule is extended without time limit.

Fairtrade Minimum Price (where it exists) is the minimum price that must be paid by buyers to producers for a product to become certified against the Fairtrade Standards.

The FMP is a floor price which covers producers' average costs of production and allows them access to their product markets. The FMP represents a formal safety net that protects producers from being forced to sell their products at too low a price when the market price is below the FMP. It is therefore the lowest possible price that the Fairtrade payer may pay to the producer.

When the relevant market price for a product is higher than the Fairtrade minimum price, then at least the market price must be paid.

Fairtrade Premium is an amount paid to producers in addition to the payment for their products. The use of the Fairtrade Premium is restricted to investment in the producers’ business, livelihood and community (for a small producer organization or contract production set-up) or to the socio-economic development of the workers and their community (for a hired labour situation). Its specific use is democratically decided by the producers.

Organic Differential: For some certified organic products, a minimum organic differential is set. It is the lowest possible differential that producers must receive in addition to the Fairtrade Minimum Price or market price, whichever is higher. If a Premium is set for the conventional product variety, this Premium also applies to the organic product, unless stated differently.

In the case of Fairtrade coffee for example, buyers pay the Fairtrade Minimum Price or the market price, whichever is higher, and a Premium for conventional coffee. For organic coffee, an organic differential needs to be paid on top of price and Premium.

Organic coffee: Minimum Price or market price + organic differential + Premium

Outgrowers are understood as all small producers not yet certified under the Fairtrade Generic Standard for Small Producer Organizations from whom Fairtrade Fresh Vegetables are being sourced by the certified Hired Labour operator.

Cost, Insurance and Freight means that the seller delivers their part of the contract when the goods pass the ship’s rail in the port of shipment.

The seller pays the costs and freight necessary to bring the goods to the named port of destination. The risk of loss or damage to the goods, as

well as any additional costs due to events occurring after the time of delivery, are transferred from the seller to the buyer. The CIF term requires

the seller to clear the goods for export..
