CIRCULAR NO. 1
23 JANUARY 2015 Dear Parents
1) WELCOME
Welcome to our readers, new staff, returning staff and pupils and our Grade 8’s of 2015. We hope that 2015 is going to be a great year for our Fairmont community and the school. Our new teachers for 2015 appear below. We wish them well in their new positions and hope that their stay at Fairmont will be full of rewards and happiness.
2) ACADEMICS
Well done to the class of 2014 on their matric results. Our overall average for all subjects has fluctuated within a 3% range over six years since 2009. The results of 2014, given the general reduction nationally and provincially in overall performances by 2% and taking into account that 2014 was the first year of a new curriculum and examination style, our overall average of 64.2% remains within a narrow band of fluctuation over the six years.

Our top 10 candidates are shown below with Delicia Moodley placed first with an overall aggregate of 91.2%. One of our candidates, who achieved very well in 5 of the 7 subjects offered, may rewrite 2 papers next month and, if the candidate is successful in just one of these, this will result in the school receiving a 100% pass rate.
The top 20 candidates in order were:
1. Delicia Moodley
2. Helen Hoenck

3. CONDOLENCES
Our condolences are extended to Maria and Jack Kropman on the passing away of their son Derrick, who matriculated as a prefect at Fairmont in 2000. Our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers are with the Kropman family and Derrick’s friends at this sad time.
4. FAIRMONT’S NEW LOGO
Last year a task team was established to develop a new logo for our school that would be simple but meaningful in its design which would become recognised and associated with the Fairmont brand.
After some developmental attempts a final product was established. Various elements associated with our coat of arms were considered, namely the vine leaves on the coat of arms that represent the vineyards of the farms of years gone on which Fairmont was established, and the beautiful mountains that form a backdrop for our school.
Observation of our coat of arms shows the representation of these mountains.
These triangular shapes which are ever present in nature and those which are man-made are familiar to us all.
The following final product was accepted:
The triangles represent the mountains in the colours of our school houses, with the inner triangle representing the ‘brown’ of Fairmont.
This logo will not replace our coat of arms, but rather compliment it.
Thank you to those involved in this project.

8. OUR 2015 MATRICS
Our academic year got underway on Wednesday this week with our opening assembly and the ceremonial pinning of the matric badges. Matrics received their badges in recognition of their status at the school at the beginning of their fifth and final year at Fairmont. We wish our Matrics well this year as they commence their journey to their final exams.
As a point of interest, please see the table below which presents a guide to the number of teaching days for our Matrics at school this year.
