I am extremely honored to have this opportunity to recognize an outstanding group of FCPS retirees. Some of you have been with FCPS for less than 10 years and some for 40 or more years. Fairfax has changed a great deal over those years, but what hasn’t changed is the feeling of belonging to the Fairfax family – the friendships, the sense of community, the work, and knowing we are all focused on a common goal. Thank you for making Fairfax County Public Schools a place like no other and thanks to your loved ones, our extended Fairfax family, for sharing you with us all these years. We will miss you greatly, but we are also excited for you. As you get ready to embark on life beyond FCPS, I encourage you to remember these things:Practice gratitude – There are so many things to be thankful for each day. Acknowledge them. It’s good for the soul.Be joyful – Look for every opportunity to laugh and have fun. It is truly an honor to recognize and celebrate Fairfax County Public Schools’ outstanding retirees.

Although I have not had the pleasure of meeting all of you, I could not be more proud of your excellent service and dedication to our school division. Whether you worked here for five years or almost five decades, we are better because of you.

So much has happened in our world, our country, and in Fairfax County since March 2020. Your resiliency and tenacity helped us stay #FCPSStrong and forge ahead during some dark moments. It is comforting to know that the legacy will continue to see us through, as we keep moving toward the brightest days ahead.

This moment is bittersweet–we will miss you greatly, but we are thrilled about the wonderful experiences that await your life beyond FCPS. Fairfax will always be your home. The friendships, fond memories, and knowing that you made a difference will always be yours to treasure.

Thank you for your many contributions and for all you have done to help our students thrive. May you continue to thrive as well. To that end, I offer this advice: Practice gratitude. Choose joy. And, stay active. I also hope you will continue to lend your voice in support of making the world a kinder place.
