Craig’sCommuniquéThe latest business news from

Chief Executive OfficerCraig Edmunds

Welcome to our December 2017 and Christmas edition newsletter. With the end

of another year near I am sure we are all wondering where it went.

Looking back at 2017 I would have to say it has been the busiest year we have ever experienced. I cannot recall a period where all divisions, in both Tasmania and Victoria, have been consistently at full capacity. Looking forward to 2018 and beyond there is confidence supported by economic indicators that this momentum is likely to continue. This is great for our industry.

It is pleasing to report that during November we recruited 16 new first year apprentices to begin their working careers with us in 2018.

Our belief that our apprentices of today are our managers and supervisors of tomorrow drives us to provide them the very best training we can. As a result we have recently renewed our training delivery for apprentices which will commence in 2018.

Expanding on our Leadership and Goal Setting Program delivered to all first-year apprentices, we have added a goal setting refresher course for our fourth-year apprentices, to assist them as they move to their next phase of their careers.

Additionally we have also commenced delivering a session to apprentices on “maximising wellbeing through strengths focus”, which is being delivered by our Director Gaye Rutherford. This supports our company purpose of assisting our apprentices and all employees to learn and grow to

their highest potential.

The front cover of our newsletter features the progress on the Redevelopment of the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Now that in-ground works are complete, the structure has commenced on the new 10-storey building known as “K Block”. The site is even more prominent now, highlighted by two of the largest tower cranes that Hobart has seen.

These cranes are critical to support the speed at which K Block will be built. Amazingly the structure is scheduled to be up to level 10 by July 2018. Progress on site is proceeding extremely well which is a credit to all working on the project.

Equally impressive is the speed at which a number of our other major projects are progressing.

The Devonport Living City project and CH Smith Redevelopment in Launceston are both moving along at a rapid pace and looking really good.

The Pharos Building at MONA is on track for completion by Christmas and this is an absolutely amazing building, one which you will only fully appreciate when you physically see it.

To all our employees and subcontractors working on these projects and the many others we are currently constructing, you are all doing a great job, well done.

The announcement of our 2017 divisional employee and apprentice of the year winners are included on pages 10-11.

These awards are recognition for exceptional performance and achievement. Congratulations and well done to the winners who will now be in the running for our overall Fairbrother Employee of the Year and Apprentice of the Year that will be announced in our first newsletter in the New Year.

A big congratulations to our employees reaching Years of Service milestones (Page 15).

A special mention to Shane Billing reaching 25 years of service and to Michael (Mick) Hayes on reaching 30 years. Mick, you are setting the benchmark as the longest serving Northern employee!

Thank you to you all for your loyalty and fantastic contribution over many years.

As we did last year we wish to acknowledge our employees who undertook additional professional development training during the year. These employees are listed on the Bulletin Board on page 15. Congratulations on your dedication and achievements.

Finally I would like to thank all staff and employees for their outstanding commitment and contribution throughout the year. Also thank you to all our valued stakeholders for your continued support.

I wish you all a very safe and Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

2017 Point to Pinnacle

In the last edition of What’s Building, it was stated that the Devonport Living City car park was the biggest concrete pour ever undertaken by Fairbrother.

Big. Mistake.

After receiving some ... ahem ... feedback, What’s Building did some digging. What is the largest concrete pour we’ve ever done?

The 13-hour pour of 493m3 at Devonport Living City was eclipsed by the Southern Division’s 14-hour 680m3 pour at Norske Skog’s Secondary Effluent Tank in 2008.

My pour is bigger than your pour!

Uh oh. We started an argument.

But even that pour doesn’t come anywhere near the Northern Division’s 2008 project at Cimitere

House where they worked for 27 hours to pour more than 1200m3.

Okay, Northern Division, you win!

Nathan Overton, Marcus Perkins, Darryn Smith, Dylan Graham and Rebecca de Groot prepare to tackle the mountain.

National appointment for our CEOFairbrother CEO Craig Edmunds was recently appointed Treasurer of the Master Builders Australia (MBA) National Board.

Craig has been Tasmania’s representative on the Master Builders Australia (MBA) National

Board for the past two years.

His appointment as Treasurer was announced at the MBA National Excellence Awards Dinner, which was this year held in Hobart for the first time.

This is a great honour for Craig who continues to represent Tasmania and contribute to the betterment of the industry.

Craig also continues his role of Chairing the MBA National Work Health & Safety Committee.

Inthe businessConstruction, Joinery

& FM (Tas) update from General Manager Kurt Arnold

Firstly, congratulations to all of our Divisional Apprentice and Employee of the Year

award winners for 2017. With 330 employees across Fairbrother, being recognised for your standout performances is something to be very proud of.

Our commitment to training apprentices is also something we can all be proud of. Our 2018 apprentice intake will see Construction and Joinery Tasmania employ 16 new apprentices across the state in January.

2017 has seen a renewed focus on our apprentice program. This includes appointing Matthew Scrimgeour to the role of Apprentice Program Co-ordinator. We have some new initiatives in the pipeline that will enhance our apprentice program and we are looking forward to seeing these come to fruition throughout 2018.

Northern ConstructionRecent activity in our Northern Division has seen the successful delivery of the new Bunnings store in Devonport.

This project threw a few challenges at us, but our project and subcontract teams were able to overcome these challenges to deliver a project that exceeded our client’s expectations. This has been an excellent outcome thanks to Project Managers Peter Adams and Shaun Roney, along with Foreman Callum Rolls and all of our employees involved.

This past period has also seen the successful completion of:

• The Northern SuburbsCommunity Centre;

• The Manor Ensuite Extensions;• The Finney Funeral Services

building.

Project Manager Nathan Murfet, and Construction Manager Phil Berwick have activity on the CH Smith carpark project (pictured above) in full swing. Our target is to have all of the carpark slabs poured by end February to allow Stage 2 to continue. The CH Smith site also incorporates the $1.4m Building 2 site, which sees Luke Davis taking on his first supervisory role under the project team.

Peter Adams and Nigel Curran are teamed up to deliver the new $10m St Helens Hospital. The 2320m2 hospital is being built on a 9100m2 greenfield site. Work began in November, and is scheduled for completion in 12 months.

Foreman Matt Sykes has taken the reigns at the Northern Support School project (allowing Nigel to take on St Helens Hospital). This project is challenging, with blending the old 1960s building into a new building and managing a growing scope.

The Vaucluse Estate project is taking shape under the watchful eye of Foreman Mick Hayes. This Georgian residence hotel conversion is on track for a January completion.

Tom Dare is our Foreman on the West Tamar Council’s Riverside Olympic Soccer Club project. This

project provides new change room and club room facilities for the soccer club, and is due to be completed in March for the upcoming 2018 season.

Facility Management

Activity levels within our FM Division have been a little subdued in comparison to last year. The storm events through July 2016 kept Richard Colman and our FM team quite busy for some time after. This year’s winter has been in total contrast, which for most of us, is a good thing! However, it does have an impact on the insurance work undertaken by our FM division.

Therefore, the division’s activity has primarily revolved around the planned and reactive maintenance undertaken for our regular FM clients across the state.

This is while things remain business as usual with our maintenance contract at Risdon Prison. Matt Legro continues to lead the Risdon team through very busy day-to-day responsive works, as well as commencing the Life Cycle Replacement Program.

Given the unpredictable nature of our maintenance work, the FM team is looking at diversifying the division into specialist fields. On the radar for 2018 is the application of

7What’s BuildingDecember 2017

Inthe businessepoxy coatings, plus undertaking construction waterproofing. Looking forward to this coming to fruition throughout the year.

Fairbrother Joinery

Our Joinery Division is now starting to climb out of the quieter few months experienced in the mid to latter part of the year.

The division has spent most of the latter part of the year working through many small- to mid-sized projects. This has kept Dion and the guys on the run!

The $1.8m joinery package on the Living City project is now starting to gain some momentum. And once this hits full swing, the continuity of work for the division will remain steady for the first part of the year.

North West Construction

Early December has seen a major milestone on the Devonport Living City project, with handover of both the car park and the food pavilion buildings occurring.

This has been a fantastic effort to from all our employees and sub-contractors. Achieving this milestone is a credit to the entire project team, led by Project Director Darryn Smith, Divisional Manager Marcus Perkins and Project Manager Jim Brinkman.

Work on the Living City multi-purpose building continues with the roof’s structural steel close to completion, the façade glazing is being installed, while our employees are busily installing the external Equitone cladding.

John Cornell and David Parker have managed to successfully handover the $2.4m SRT Logistics pavement slabs and shed extension in November.

The grass is growing rapidly at the Dial Regional Sports Complex (pictured below). John Cornell and Alan Alford have things progressing well, and are on track for completion early next year, ready for the 2018 football season.

Work has just commenced on Building D at the Homemakers site. With Project Manager Brad Symmons and Foreman Callum Rolls entrusted with the task of delivering this project in the first half of 2018.

Work at Elphinstone’s Ormsby Street site is finishing up, while an extension to cater for a medical centre at Hill Street gets underway.

We have been successful with securing the Burnie City Council’s $1.5m elevated walkway project on Marine Terrace. Work begins in late December.

Welcome back to Warwick Jones after an 18-month quest in England.

Southern Construction

With the UTAS NRAS Student Accommodation now complete, our marquee project in the south is MONA’s Pharos Building.

Our project team, Project Manager Phil DeJong, Senior Project Manager Clint Mead, Site Manager Travis Smith and Foreman Mitch Direen have had their hands full with keeping up with the dynamic demands of this unique and challenging project.

Project Manager Dylan Graham and Site Manager Heath Lovell have teamed up to deliver Huon Aquaculture’s new salmon nursery in Port Huon. The 8800m2 building will house 12 grow-out tanks, four grading tanks, water treatment facilities, and a staff office.

Progress on the new classrooms at the Austins Ferry Primary School are taking shape. Foreman Adrian DeJong has the end of January completion date in sight.

Activity at 40 Elizabeth Street is underway, with the existing building to be demolished by the end of the year to make way for the new building, while Site foreman Ben Setchel is steering the DHHS Supported Accommodation towards completion in February.

Dan Murphy’s in New Town, along with a 16-unit development on New Town Road are on track to commence in January.

Merry Christmas

Thanks to all CJ&FM employees for their efforts this year. 2017 has been a positive year on the project front and we’re looking forward to doing it again in 2018. I hope everyone has a great festive season, staying safe and enjoying time with friends and family over the well-earned break.

Inthe businessConstruction Victoria update

from General ManagerMick Josey

It’s that hectic time again with numerous projects to be finished by Christmas and new projects

to commence. All this without the amount of work to be tendered prior to the break.

The entire division, under the current pressures of the buoyant Victorian construction industry, has performed extremely well. It feels as though this has been the fastest year yet. It is a sign of just how busy the division has been all year where most of it seems to have flown by.

In this time we have welcomed new important members to our team, which is continuing to expand and build on the strong reputation Fairbrother is forging in Victoria.

The big news for Victoria in this edition is the future expansion in the New Year. On April 1 Billy Edis, his wife Amy and their three children will relocate to the North East of the state where we intend to expand our Victorian coverage.

Plenty of opportunities present in this region and I am confident that in the not-too-distant future we will secure a sustainable amount of works in this region also.

Central

Current projects are the Bendigo Stadium and works to the new facility are almost complete with civil and finishing trades currently onsite completing the externals, and finishing off the internals.

Our works will not be complete until March or April due to a significant variation of the fire engineering brief where we must now sprinkler the entire existing operational facility.

Notre Dame Stage 1 (pictured above) is complete, looks fantastic and works have commenced on Notre Dame Stage 2 Arts Precinct.

Echuca Education Precinct is looking the goods also and the team is feverishly working to have the project complete early in the New Year.

Kyneton Secondary College is underway with works to progress through the 2018 year and early 2019 due to staging requirements.

South West

Portland has seen a boom of late with five schools being rebuilt or refurbished and we have been fortunate enough to have been successful on four of the five schools. This has kept Aaron and Caolan very busy as they manage multiple sites concurrently.

Our continuing major projects in the Port Fairy Waterfront building and Timboon School P-12 continue to progress well with both scheduled for completion early in the New Year. The Waterfront building in particular is drawing a lot of interest from pedestrians and

will be a prominent feature on the river side for years to come.

The Fairbrother-Kane JV is working in a mutually cohesive fashion at the Arrarat Intermediate Secure Facility. The team is progressing extremely well and works are being undertaken in an expedited manner as we have some real challenges with program.

There are also many future opportunities presenting in the region

This year the South West division hosted the Construction Victoria Christmas party, taking the opportunity to show the Central division some southern seaside hospitality.

It blew 40 knots all day.

It was a great chance to get the Construction Victoria team together to celebrate and unwind from a busy year and a great time was had by all.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone and their families a Very Merry Christmas and a Safe, Happy and prosperous New Year.

Inthe businessSQE update from

Corporate Services Manager David Toohey

2017 saw a very busy year for the systems and SQE teams across the company.

We started off with our third party (DLCS) re-accreditation audit in February with the goal of upgrading our Quality and Environmental standards to the latest versions.

After a long and detailed audit, we were successful in the upgrade and this meant Fairbrother was the first construction company in Tasmania to do so.

This result was testament to the hard work and dedication of all

staff involved and shows that when our systems are constantly reviewed and updated we are at the leading edge of best practice in the industry.

This year also saw two audits conducted on the Bendigo Stadium expansion job by the Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner (OFSC).

For those who don’t know, this accreditation system allows Fairbrother to bid for and construct federally funded jobs. With only 360 companies across the country having this accreditation, it puts us at the forefront of construction companies nationally.

The two audits in Bendigo highlighted where our system needed to improve and we were able to close out 90% of

previous corrective actions that were legacy items from a number of years ago. We are now in a very strong position moving into February 2018 when we will be audited again for re-accreditation under this scheme.

Internally we continue to audit and inspect our work at regular intervals by all levels of management and the SQE teams.

This continuous regimen means we are always looking at ways to improve and constantly get better at how we manage our projects. It is an ongoing task and takes a lot of people to ensure Fairbrother delivers projects on time, safely and on budget.

Thanks to all involved in making 2017 a successful year.

The John Holland-Fairbrother Joint Venture will finish off 2017 with the Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment project in a great position.

The ground and first floor concrete slabs are already completed ahead of schedule, and some substantial concrete pours have been undertaken, bringing the new K-Block up and out of the ground.

The project remains on track for completion in mid-2019.

Onwards, upwards for hospital project
