Nine years ago, Rahama Wright was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali helping a group of women organize their first shea butter cooperative. Today, she is President and CEO of Shea Yeleen, a small, growing social enterprise that works to empower rural women in sub-Saharan Africa by selling fair trade, unrefined shea butter skincare products in the US. A Ghanaian-American, Rahama started Shea Yeleen to help shea producers build and strengthen their own independent cooperatives. Earlier this year, Rahama had the opportunity to further this work when she traveled to northern Ghana to visit a group of women representing the Tamale Shea Cluster Initiative (TaSCI).

The Tamale Shea Cluster Initiative is a local organization of 400 women shea producers organized into independent shea butter cooperatives in over 14 villages. Rahama was introduced to TaSCI by the U.S. Embassy and was immediately interested in learning more about their work.

When Rahama learned that the members needed assistance with financial modeling, she offered to travel to Tamale to lead a training session focused on pricing.

Tamale is a large town in northern Ghana, about 10 hours by bus from the national capital of Accra. Tamale and the surrounding villages are largely Muslim communities that practice polygamy, like many regions in sub-Saharan Africa. Families live in compounds of multiple mud huts, often with grass or metal roofs, most without running water or electricity. The hardworking women in this region are responsible for caring for the family, washing laundry, cooking meals, tending to children, as well as farming, gardening, or operating small business endeavors to earn money to pay for necessities and food.

According to surveys Shea Yeleen has conducted in the region, most women in the villages surrounding

Tamale live on less than $1 a day, cannot afford to send their children to school, and suffer from health issues such as malaria and dysentery.

member spotlight: Shea Yeleen Creates New Opportunities in Ghana

Rahama Wright and shea butter producer Gladys Sala Petey were interviewed by Voice of America about their participation in the 2011 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Shea Yeleen invited Gladys and two other shea butter producers to visit Washington, D.C., share their stories, and teach festival visitors about the importance of fair trade shea butter as a part of this exciting event.

WATCH: Shea Yeleen at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival

Page 25: Fair Trade Federation Holiday Gift Guide 2012

For centuries, women in Tamale have produced unrefined shea butter, made from the seed of the Karite Tree. Shea butter, which is traditionally used for cooking, skin care, medicines, and oil lamps, is produced through a process that involves collecting the fruit, then extracting, drying, and grinding the seeds, and finally heating and mixing with water to extract the oil. Women from the same family or village often work together to complete this laborious process. As outside interest in shea butter has grown in the last few years, many women formed democratic shea butter cooperatives to produce larger quantities of shea butter to sell to buyers and exporters.

Over the course of the 2-day visit and training sessions, Rahama helped TaSCI members assess their production costs and sales revenue. Members were selling their shea butter primarily to buyers from companies in the United Kingdom and India. After the pricing analysis, members realized that the prices offered by these buyers did not allow them to make a profit. In fact, members were losing money on almost all shea transactions with these buyers. Rahama led a discussion with TaSCI to help

evaluate ways to cut production costs, negotiate purchasing prices with buyers, and ultimately to set an agreed price for shea butter among the TaSCI cooperatives, allowing the members to support each other and present their pricing needs to buyers as a collective.

Back in Washington, D.C., Shea Yeleen is developing a strategy to provide sustainable support to TaSCI. Shea Yeleen is working to become an official entity in Ghana, with a Board of Directors including representation from TaSCI, and a Ghanaian office to facilitate ongoing communications. Shea Yeleen will provide sponsorship for producers to access trainings on production and business development skills. Finally, Shea Yeleen will purchase TaSCI’s shea butter at fair trade prices. Shea Yeleen is excited to have begun the first stages of this plan to support the important work of the Tamale Shea Cluster, and looks forward to expanding efforts in 2013. --Whitney Files, Shea Yeleen www.sheayeleen.com

As outside interest in shea butter has grown, many women formed democratic shea butter cooperatives to produce larger

quantities for export.

In 2008, its first year, Just Haiti imported 300 pounds of

high-quality, shade-grown, chemical-free coffee from a 24-

member grower association in Baraderes called KDB. In 2012,

that total expanded to 10,000 pounds, and KDB has grown to

more than 100 members! Although still small, Just Haiti has

had incredible success in growing a business whose

beneficiaries are Haitian coffee growers. In 2011, 67% of the

price of a bag of Just Haiti Coffee went directly to the coffee

growers in Haiti.

In 2011, Just Haiti started to build on the work begun in

Baraderes by expanding into other small grower communities

in Haiti. The expansion is being undertaken carefully, to

ensure that Just Haiti preserves the relationship-based model

of doing business that is the foundation of their success.

Just Haiti works with the most vulnerable and economically

at-risk communities, who would not otherwise have access to

technical assistance and market development. This approach

works in part because Just Haiti also seeks communities that

already have a U.S.-based partner, such as a church or non-

profit organization, which is in agreement with the Just Haiti

vision and wants to accompany their Haitian partners in the

process of developing high-quality coffee for export. The U.S.

partners accept some financial and marketing responsibility,

in return for Just Haiti’s technical expertise and market

development.

Just Haiti began in 2006 as an idea. Inspired by the work of another FTF member, Café Justo in Douglas, AZ, Just Haiti founder Kim Lamberty wanted to begin a fair trade coffee program in Baraderes, Haiti. Baraderes is a small, poverty-stricken, isolated town and regional center located at the end of 30 miles of dirt road, nestled among the mountains in southern Haiti. Just Haiti’s founders had a long-term relationship with the community through the Baraderes parish.

The goal was to work with that community of traditional coffee growers to regenerate their business, which had collapsed in the 1980s, in a way that benefitted the growers and their families, rather than just coffee speculators or exporters.

Just Haiti’s first coffee training in Baraderes, 2008. Coffee growers from Café Justo’s

cooperative in Salvador Urbina, Chiapas, Mexico traveled to Haiti to lead the training.

In 2011, 67% of the price of a bag of Just

Haiti Coffee went directly to the coffee

growers in Haiti.

member spotlight: Growing Justice in Haiti

Page 27: Fair Trade Federation Holiday Gift Guide 2012

Just Haiti pays the fair trade price for coffee up front – without any reductions – then exports, roasts, packages, and sells the coffee in the United States. Afterward, all profits go directly to the coffee producers and their families.

How does Just Haiti know the growers in Baraderes are doing well? Growers say they receive a “package” of benefits through their membership in KDB. That package includes receiving a much higher price for their coffee than previously. Most growers tell Just Haiti that they use that money first to pay for the education of their children.

The story of Marise Paivin is typical. She joined KDB in 2009 because she wanted to improve her financial situation, and she had heard that members of the association receive a “benefit,” or profit check, in addition to the fair trade price for the coffee. Her situation has improved dramatically as a result of that check. She now pays for the education of her children, and she has expanded her small farm plot so that she can grow more of the food she needs to feed her family, helping to keep her kids from going hungry.

Benefits also include developing a strong community among the growers, training and formation, leadership development, and a safety net that consists of health care assistance, a death benefit, and assistance for needy families.

Carcasse, a town also located in Haiti’s south, was the second community of growers to begin selling coffee to Just Haiti, in 2011. Just Haiti is currently in conversation with 4 other communities across Haiti. Their goal: to add 15 new grower communities to the Just Haiti family in 5 years.

Your purchase of Just Haiti Coffee is a vital part of this effort. Together we will drink coffee and grow justice in Haiti, one coffee bean at a time. –Kim Lamberty, President of Just Haiti, Inc.
