Challenge #1

Identifying “need” across college systems and across disciplines (gerontology, nursing & social welfare)

Page 4: Faculty Roles & Challenges in Interprofessional Gerontology Education Patty Robinson, PhD College of the Canyons Rachel Price, MSG UCLA

Our Approach

• Used discipline-specific competencies

• Faculty assessed how well competencies were being met in their programs using “competency mapping tool”

• Identified opportunities for faculty development to address gaps

Maximizing faculty adoption and use of new content in their own teaching programs

Challenge #2

Page 6: Faculty Roles & Challenges in Interprofessional Gerontology Education Patty Robinson, PhD College of the Canyons Rachel Price, MSG UCLA

• Developed curricula tool kits to provide flexibility in how they could be used

• Set expectations for faculty

• Built Action Planning into faculty development programs

• Provided follow-on TA/coaching

Our Approach

Page 7: Faculty Roles & Challenges in Interprofessional Gerontology Education Patty Robinson, PhD College of the Canyons Rachel Price, MSG UCLA

• Action Plan development: 32 small, 49 medium and 15 large

• Trained a total of 123 faculty (goal was 60)

• These faculty reached 4,433 other trainees (faculty and students) by 2010

How can we most effectively help college faculty to teach courses designed by project faculty?

Challenge #3

Page 9: Faculty Roles & Challenges in Interprofessional Gerontology Education Patty Robinson, PhD College of the Canyons Rachel Price, MSG UCLA

• Developed comprehensive tool kits and resources for course materials

• Hosted course specific break out sessions during faculty development programs

• Set up coaching/mentoring project faculty + teaching faculty course teams

• Project faculty served a TA/coaching role through call meetings prior to and during the course

Our Approach

Page 10: Faculty Roles & Challenges in Interprofessional Gerontology Education Patty Robinson, PhD College of the Canyons Rachel Price, MSG UCLA

• Courses developed and approved at both colleges

• Offered faculty development program to 18 College of the Canyons (COC) faculty

• Courses being piloted at COC Fall, 2011• Faculty development program planned for Feb,

2012 at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC)• Courses will continue at COC and be offered at

SBCC starting Fall, 2012
