WELCOME TO LIVERPOOL JOHN MOORES UNIVERSITYDear Applicant

In this document, we set out our credentials and just some of the many facts and figures that make us all proud of our university.

This is a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor position for the Faculty of Science.

This is a fantastic university, full of creative and innovative individuals involved in an extensive range of work that helps us make sense of and make progress in our society. We are lucky to have grown from the origins of the city and our shared history is one of aspiration and endeavour through the generations.

We have a distinct place in this lively city with its warm, witty and open people; we share that spirit of adventure with a community striving to make a difference and put something back.

Our staff, students and alumni are our greatest assets and the impact that the university has goes beyond the usual economic and social metrics. Our impact can also be measured in our footprint and how often you will meet someone who has been transformed by a connection with our university.

Making a difference is what a university should be about. These are challenging times for higher education and we embrace the scrutiny from our regulators and our policy makers. We believe we should be providing value for money and that our students should be given the best possible experience through learning, scholarship and their environment. It is also our place to challenge and engage with those policymakers to ensure that we are representing our students and communities at the highest level.

We are in a good place financially, our student numbers are robust, we are planning major capital developments and, like many in our sector, we are beginning to make changes in the face of uncertain financial realities.

In this context, we are seeking an inspiring and motivating leader for our Faculty of Science. We are looking for a Pro-Vice-Chancellor to drive the Faculty to ever-greater success and as a member of our senior Executive Leadership Team; you will have cabinet responsibility for the corporate university and for continued institutional success.

Professor Ian G CampbellVice-Chancellor

LJMU TOGETHER MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our city and our university stand tall together. We have grown from the confident, ambitious origins of Liverpool and have a shared history built on working hard, caring about supporting people and communities and being proud of who we are.

We have a distinct place in this lively city with our warm, friendly and open people. We share a spirit of adventure with a community striving to make a difference and put something back.

Our staff, students and alumni are the beating heart of this university, with an impact that goes beyond academic, economic and social measures. It can be seen in our physical footprint around the city, our global connections and how often you will meet someone who has been transformed by a connection with our university and has helped transform the lives of others.

Making a difference is what a university should be about. It is what we are about. It is who we are. It is Liverpool John Moores University.

REMOVING BARRIERS TO EDUCATION

LJMU has a long-established and successful history of outreach activity designed to raise aspirations and attainment and encourage students from underrepresented groups to apply to higher education. All outreach activity is carefully planned and targeted based on a range of internal and external information sources and analyses. This includes UCAS data and research, OfS performance indicators, GCSE and A level attainment data, the higher education participation rates of learners from schools and colleges and LJMU’s own institutional monitoring and research.

Equality and diversity is embedded within all aspects of the University’s outreach work. Target groups include lower quintile groups, low participation neighbourhoods, pupils on free school meals, first generation into HE and mature students (age 21 plus) with level 2 and level 3 qualifications. The University also seeks to widen participation for disabled students, Looked after Children (LAC) and specific BAME groups that are under-represented in HE, for example black and Asian students. In addition, LJMU is committed to raising aspirations amongst young white males from lower socio-economic groups, and endeavours to widen access to this group, offering appropriate

EXEMPLAR OUTREACH PROJECTS

LJMU developed the world’s largest fully robotic telescope in 2004. Since then the University has enabled schools in the UK and Ireland to request observations alongside professional astronomers from the Liverpool Telescope through its National Schools Observatory (NSO). The NSO currently has over 17,000 individual registered teachers and pupils.

LJMU’s £1million Chemistry for All project aimed to help increase the numbers of school pupils who go on to study and work in fields related to STEM subjects. Funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), this project enabled pupils from six local schools to take part in activities on campus, helping widen participation and raise pupil awareness of related careers.

LJMU is an active partner in the Uni-Connect Collaborative Outreach Programme – Shaping Futures. Successfully drawing down £258,481 in Phase 1, LJMU was an influential partner in shaping Phase 2 of the consortium. LJMU has secured another £120,138 in Phase 2; including 36.1% of the total grant funding that was available to bid for by the 12 Shaping futures partners.

LJMU has two grant funded projects, one continuing the Absolute Chemistry programme and the other supporting learners who may be at risk of not gaining the basic Maths GCSE prerequisite to access Higher Education.

The LJMU Absolute Chemistry Team received project funding receiving a total of £69,587 from Phase 1, the team was awarded £45,138 across two projects, one to deliver enrichment events to 14–16 year olds (pre-16 project) and one to deliver University based events to sixth form students (post-16 project) during year 1 (2019/2020).

The John Lennon Imagine Awards enable the University to provide targeted support to care leavers and students irreconcilably estranged from their families. LJMU offers this vulnerable group of students a vital safety net, financial assistance and most importantly, year-round access to expert staff.

EXEMPLAR RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Our Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences is ranked the twelfth best sport sciences school in the world, with 79% of its publications being co-produced with international collaborative partners (Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2018). Its work encompasses elite athletes as well as clinical groups, with interventions impacting on the youngest in society through to the oldest.

Our Astrophysics Research Institute (ARI) is one of the world’s leading authorities in astronomy and astrophysics, with internationally recognised expertise in theoretical galaxy formation, time domain astrophysics, stellar populations and astronomical instrumentation. The development of the Liverpool Telescope enabled the ARI to play an instrumental role in developing a network of research-class telescopes on key sites around the globe. Now, we are planning to develop another robotic telescope, which is expected to see first light around 2025.

The Drones Research Laboratory is enabling LJMU to harness its interdisciplinary expertise in this exciting new technology, via new degree courses, research and commercial projects within Liverpool and around the world. For example, working with NGOs, such as the World Wildlife Fund, LJMU is using this technology to develop innovative approaches to conversation in Nepal, Borneo and Malaysia.

FaceLab research-based facility is used by the Police to help identify dead bodies and make e-fits of criminals based on witness accounts or partial CCTV evidence. FaceLab is also able to produce facial images from decomposed bodies, enabling archaeologists to find out how figures from the past looked.

RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIP

LJMU’s research efforts and resources are focused through acclaimed research institutes and centres, which support innovative new approaches that traverse traditional academic boundaries and challenge conventional thinking. This research strategy underpinned the University’s strong performance in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

In REF 2021 we are submitting c. 604 staff to 16 units of assessment, this compares to c. 256 staff in 2014.  This reflects a broader embedding of a positive research culture across LJMU as well as some eligibility rule changes in REF 2021.

The LJMU research strategy underpinned a strong performance in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF):

I Ranked 62nd in the UK for research excellence (REF2014).

I World-leading research more than doubled at LJMU between 2008 and 2014.

I 96% research rated as international quality or above (REF2014).

I 67% increase in total Quality Research (QR) funding following REF2014.

Research and scholarship activities are central to the student experience, informing the curriculum at all levels and ensuring that we deliver an exceptional academic experience positioned at the vanguard of developments in all disciplines.  Consequently, the research strategy articulated in the 2017-2022 LJMU strategic plan sought to embed, support and grow a positive research culture across the university. Staff recruitment and support, the development of the PGR student numbers and our doctoral academy, as well as financial and technical resource to cultivate a transformative research and knowledge exchange environment, has led to a substantial increase in research activity and FTE submitted to REF2021. Further examples of success in developing a broad research of culture at LJMU include:

I Research grants portfolio worth £55 million as at July 2019), and £10m new research awards (August 2019-July 2019).

I In PRES 2019, LJMU was above average in the areas of supervision (87%), research culture (65%), progression (84%) and responsibilities (79%).

ENTERPRISE AND KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE INITIATIVES

Sensor City, a landmark collaborative venture between LJMU and the University of Liverpool, is helping position Liverpool and the UK at the vanguard of innovations in sensor technology. Backed by the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, Sensor City is forecast to create over 300 new businesses and at least 1,000 jobs over the next decade. Current projects include collaborating with Alder Hey Children’s hospital to change the way patients are treated by integrating sensors into new technology and investigating how sensors can be used in the food industry to monitor quality and water content.

Our Global Maritime Knowledge Hub – run jointly with Wirral Council and Mersey Maritime – brings together the region’s key maritime assets to create a single centre for innovation, research and development, education and training, and business support. The Hub has already introduced Peel Ports to novel processes and technologies thanks to our involvement in a wide range of EU funded

projects relating to freight, logistics and multimodal transport.

LJMU is a key player in the £10million LCR4.0 project, which is helping SMEs in the manufacturing sector harness new Industry 4.0 technologies and innovations linked to automation, data exchange and the Internet of Things. LCR 4.0 has the potential to transform manufacturing in the Liverpool City Region, helping local firms develop smarter products, smarter processes and smarter supply chains. The project pulls together leading experts from LJMU, the University of Liverpool’s Virtual Engineering Centre, Sensor City, the Hartree Research Centre in Daresbury and Liverpool Local Enterprise Partnership’s Growth Hub.

Research and consultancy by the Football Exchange (FEX), based within the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences (RISES), has changed how elite clubs manage the preparation and recovery of their players, and developed formal academic training and CPD courses for staff across the global ‘football family’. The Physical Activity Exchange (PAEX) within RISES has supported Liverpool city activity and now the launch and development of a global active city movement.

INDUSTRY ENGAGEMENT

LJMU’s ‘open door’ approach to supporting local industry means it can harness all of the University’s expertise to help increase the intellectual capital within the region’s companies.

I Top 50 UK ranking for income generation and development.

I 58th in the UK for income from contract research.
