COMMUNICATION
“Initially I was a little nervous about returning to study. Being 22 and having come from working full-time, I thought it would be difficult getting back into the university ‘scene’ and developing good study habits again, but all of the staff at VU were extremely supportive and provided a lot of encouragement. My lecturers and tutors are all very friendly and approachable. I have gotten to know them quite well and they’re always more than happy to help with an assignment or offer advice.IhavereallyenjoyedthesubjectsIamstudyingaspartoftheBachelorofCommunication(ProfessionalWriting).Theyhaveallprovided me with a challenge and are definitely never boring!

PATHWAYS – FACULTY OF ARTS, EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENTTheFacultyofArts,EducationandHumanDevelopment values and recognises learning you have previously undertaken. this learning may have taken place at victoria university’s own taFE or at one of the local or international institutions with which the Faculty has formal arrangements.
What are Pathways?
Pathways are formal admission agreements that recognise learning already undertaken by students. Most of the Faculty’s pathways are‘cross-sectoral’;thatis,theyrecogniselearning undertaken by students at taFE level. students admitted via a pathway are entitled to the credit outlined in the victoria university’s Pathways Database. this can be accessed through our website and typing in Pathwaysinthesearchbox.
What Pathways are offered by the Faculty?
Pathways are available for a range of diploma and advanced diploma courses in areas such asLiberalArts,Children’sServices,YouthWork,SportandRecreation,ProfessionalWritingandEditing, andPublicRelations.Pathways into postgraduate courses such as the Master of teaching and the Master of tEsOL are also available. the Faculty also has pathways with a range of international institutions such as yew chung college in China,HELPUniversityCollegeinMalaysiaand ERc institute in singapore. the full range of pathways can be found on the university’s Pathways Database www.vu.edu.au/courses/study-pathways
How do Pathways benefit me?
Inmostcases, pathwaysprovidestudents the opportunity to finish their higher education course early by granting credit for study already undertaken. Most pathways allow students to tailor their study load to suit their individual circumstances. since pathways students have undertakenlearningatapost-secondarylevel,studentsaregenerallywellequippedtofitintouniversitylife.Inaddition,pathwayshavebeendesignedbyacademics,sostudentswillbeableto build on learning already undertaken.
Do Pathways students perform well at University?
Many of our pathways students have gone on to undertake postgraduate study. some studentsarecurrentlyenrolledin, orhavecompletedGraduateDiplomas,Masters,Doctorates and PhDs. Other students are now working successfully in their chosen fields.
I’m nervous about the transition to University – is there help available?
students entering on a pathway may enrol in the Faculty’s uniskills program. this one-day intensive course is held during orientation week and is open to both international and local students. the course is free and offers students important higher education skills suchasessaywriting, criticalthinkingandhow to access and use the library. students who would like information on this transition course should contact via email: [email protected]

“After completing the Diploma of Liberal Arts in 2001, it seemed only natural to pathway across to the Bachelor of Arts. After all, I had a sister who only the year before had done the same thing. I watched her progress from a shy and unassuming person to someone who could speak broadly on a range of contemporary political and social issues. I was inspired.”“BackthenIcouldn’thaveknownthatIwouldbecomesoinvolvedinthewholeculture oflearning.TenyearsonandI’mstillhere,studyingmyPhDandworkingfull-timefor thefaculty.I’mwatchingotherpeoplewho, likemysisterandI,arethefirstintheirfamily to go to university. we’ve both used pathways to make this happen.
