I. FACULTY OF HUMANITIES (FHS)
The Faculty of Humanities (FHS) is Charles University’s youngest faculty. Originally founded in the
early 1990s as the Institute for Liberal Education, it was elevated to the rank of a faculty in 2000,
the vision being that it would offer study programmes at the Bachelor, Master’s and PhD levels
in various humanities and social science disciplines not yet established at CU. The FHS quickly gained
a reputation as a progressive school with innovative study programmes and teaching methods.
The mission of the Faculty of Humanities is through high-quality education to endow students with
the ability to lead a fulfilling life in this increasingly complex and changing world.
to provide education in the humanities and social sciences that meets the highest international
standards;
to achieve excellence in research and integrate it with education;
to cultivate the ability of students to learn throughout life and encourage self-responsibility
and a commitment to society;
to promote the mobility of the FHS’s increasingly international student body and academic
staff.
The Faculty of Humanities is dedicated to excellence in various areas of academic research.
The faculty participates in international and national research projects and promotes young
researchers’ academic development.
Research at the Faculty of Humanities is supervised by the Department of Science and Research.
The list of all research projects is available on the department’s website: http://fhs.cuni.cz/FHSENG-

Degrees Offered in Foreign Languages
i. Institute of Liberal Arts and Humanities (SHV)
The programme of Liberal Arts and Humanities (SHV) is focused on philosophical, historical,
and cultural and social anthropology. The significant features of the programme are broad offer of
courses and liberal curriculum that allows students to improve their individual abilities and interests.
Students complete mandatory courses in humanities and social sciences and pass comprehensive
exams relevant to each field. By their choice of courses during their study, they can gradually
specialise either for further (Master’s) studies, or for the practical use of the acquired skills.
The study programme is divided into two segments, the theoretical segment and the
application segment, and into six sub-modules: the theoretical segment includes the social science,
the historical and the philosophical modules; the application segment is comprised of the
communicative, the creative and the qualified skills modules. The head of each particular module is
responsible for the selection and for the quality of offered courses. It is customary that each student
chooses a so-called tutor (a teacher of FHS UK) at the beginning of or during their studies. The tutor
helps students to choose relevant courses and later the theme of their diploma thesis, of which they
are the supervisor of. Choosing a tutor is not compulsory, but highly recommended, as they aid in the
easier and more successful orientation in the study programme.
Information on the graduates’ acquired skills
The graduate of Liberal Arts and Humanities acquires knowledge in many disciplines of the
humanities (philosophy, sociology, psychology, history, anthropology and economics)
and interdisciplinary, thorough practical knowledge of at least one foreign language, including
the capability of professional translation, the ability of critical thinking and of sophisticated speech
and writing. Great emphasis is put, above all, on self-reliance and responsibility training and on
individual creative work, which allows for further effective education and flexibility under the
changing conditions on the labour market. The graduate acquires qualifications for a wide range

of professions, for example, in the fields of state administration and self-government, in non-profit
organisations, in education, in research activities for various institutions, or in consulting in the
multicultural sphere and in humanities-oriented institutions. The graduate with a predominantly
theoretical specialisation acquires during their studies not only a solid base in the general humanities,
but also expertise in any of above-mentioned humanities disciplines, and thus will be adequately
prepared for further studies in many humanities branches on the master’s level. The graduate with a
predominantly applied skills specialisation may be employed in the fields of public relations,
advertisement, media etc., thanks to their acquired knowledge of, for example, creating research
projects, text editing and preparation, information processing and creating company presentations.
Entrance Exams
The three-year study programme is open in the present form of study. The entrance examination is
comprised of a summary of an English academic text, to be written in English, and answering follow-
up questions based on the text, in English. These questions are intended to ascertain whether or not
the applicant fully grasped the contents of the text. The applicant can acquire up to 28 points (25 for
the summary and one point for each of the answers). An applicant whose summary is not satisfactory
will be awarded 0 points and will not be admitted. The conditions for admittance include presenting
a diploma certifying successful completion of secondary school (high school). In case of high school
graduation abroad, applicants have to submitt nostrification of high school diploma.
Electronic aids are not allowed during the entrance examination. Prior to the examination, applicants
will receive a letter announcing the date and time of the examination. It is anticipated that
the examination will be held on Wednesday, June 6th, 2012. Applicants who cannot take
the examination due to justified reasons (illness) will be given an extra term of the examination.
Simultaneously taking another entrance examination to another graduate school is not considered
a legitimate reason for being entitled to take it at a later date. A duly justified request for a later date
of the entrance examination should be delivered to the Students’ Office within three working days
after the regular term of the examination.

i. German and French Philosophy in European Context
The Erasmus Master Mundus programme German and French Philosophy in Europe
(EuroPhilosophie) offers a two-year Master’s study programme to students from all over the world
who are chosen by an entrance exam; the study programme is aimed especially at German and French
philosophy from the 18th century to the present and their reciprocal influences in the intellectual
and cultural European space. The programme is taught in German and French at seven different
universities. Tuition at FHS UK is particularly focused on German and French phenomenology,
but courses on German classic philosophy and contemporary French thought are also offered.
ii. Historical Sociology
The aim of the study programme of historical sociology is to cultivate research activities and the
education of experts with a specialisation in the issues of long-term social processes and trends that
have a significant impact on life of contemporary societies. Above all, it deals with the problems
of modernisation and social change, globalisation trends and influences, integration and
disintegration processes, relationship of continuity and discontinuity, religious and cultural pluralism,
linking the global to the local, identification of the chances and risks of social development, analysis
of conflict situations and the possibility of overcoming them. The need for understanding of all of
these issues invokes the need for the development of adequate theoretical and methodological
approaches, and also of the specific training of university students.

iii. Oral History and Contemporary History
The two-year Master’s study programme in Oral History and Contemporary History is intended for
students interested in contemporary (European) history, in interviewing methodologies and in
interpretative methods. Its main aim is to train students to conduct research through creating and
analysing interviews, and developing fieldwork projects to address those historical and contemporary
issues that require interdisciplinary investigation. The Master is divided into two sections, the first
covers contemporary (Czech and international) history and events, the second is methodological and
focuses on various interviewing techniques through which we can study contemporary history. It
binds together two general approaches of studying history, the macro and micro approaches, and
enables a thorough understanding of recent events in history. The Master Study Programme in Oral
and Contemporary History has practical applications in academic and university research, historic
preservation and legal and human rights work.
i. General Anthropology
PhD studies of Anthropology are realised in the fields of philosophical, historical, socio-cultural, socio-
linguistic and physical anthropology. The task of the study programme is to learn the theoretical basis
of the field and to master its methods and methodology of research work. The curriculum includes an
exam in a living language and four compulsory exams. The concept of the study programme and the
requirements of each field are determined by the department council. The study programme is
organised in both fulltime and correspondence forms of study.

Courses in Foreign Languages (2011/2012)
You may find the list of courses as well as the schedule in the student information system (SIS):
https://is.cuni.cz/studium/eng/predmety/index.php?KEY=Az1.
The course targets students staying in the Czech Republic for a limited period of time and need to
cover the basis of the language in order to communicate in everyday situations. It aims to provide
the students with basic skills, grammar and vocabulary to deal with the life in the Czech Republic,
to give them an idea of the Czech language system as well as Czech culture. The instruction material is
based on common situations the students face, with emphasis on both receptive and productive
language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing). Grammar is used functionally, as a tool to
reach communicational competencies but not the core purpose of the learning process.
