Welcome

The Chair for European Law, Public International Law and

Public Law is glad to announce that the University of

Leipzig will host its first session of the International

Summer School on Human Rights Protection under the

ECHR in summer 2019. This Summer School combines the

academic expertise of an alma mater which is both rich in

tradition while at the same time being a modern, forward-

thinking institution with its unique location in a vibrant

city.

It welcomes students and professionals from all over the

world to analyse and discuss current developments and

recent judicial decisions in order to impart a profound

knowledge on the protection of human rights under the

application of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Particular focus will be put on procedural and practice-

oriented questions. The workshops will cover a wide range

of topics, from Terrorism, Slavery, Children's Rights, War

Crimes, Judicial Independence, the Freedom of Religion,

Data Protection Rights, and "Push backs" at EU external

borders. Please find all the courses in the schedule on the

following pages.

Last but not least, you’ll be able to explore one of

Germany’s most beloved cities for students. It’s your turn

to find out more about the fascination of this city while

spending an unforgettable week by learning and living in

it.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you at Leipzig in

summer!

Course Venue

Leipzig is a place where tradition rubs shoulders with

zeitgeist. With a history going back over 1,000 years, this

Saxon metropolis has earned more than a few claims to

fame – as a city of music, of commerce, as the site of the

Peaceful Revolution, as Little Paris, and the Venice of the

North. Moreover, Leipzig is one of Germany's most

popular cities among students – and has been for a long

time. Leipzig University has enriched the intellectual and

cultural life of the city of Leipzig for six centuries. Founded

in 1409 it is the second oldest university in Germany with

uninterrupted teaching and research programmes.

Numerous personalities of worldwide renown such as

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and Johann Wolfgang von

Goethe have taught or studied here, with important

sources of inspiration for the development of the sciences

repeatedly originating from Leipzig. As the State

University of Saxony, it has made an important

contribution to the development of the region. The

University has gained a national and international

reputation thanks to its wide range of subjects and

particular emphasis on the Humanities, Natural Sciences

and Life Sciences.

The Summer School courses will take place in one of the

most outstanding buildings of the city: the Old Stock

Exchange. It was built in the 17th century in early Baroque

style to serve as a prestigious gathering-place for

merchants. You’ll find it at the end of the Naschmarkt, a

plaza right in the city centre.
