Course Load

13

• A student shall take at least 9 units of courses

and no more than 18 units of courses in any

term within the normative study period except

when s/he is on first or extended academic

probation

Note: Approval has been sought for first-year

students to take 19 units per term.

• A student shall take no more than 6 units of

courses in each summer session, and no student

shall be allowed to take more than 39 units in

an academic year

admittees without HKDSE Math M1/M2.

• JUPAS admitees without HKDSE Math

M1/M2 will be assigned to take

MATH 1020 + MATH1510 by default.

No test will be arranged.

• Any student who absents from the test or

fails the test must take both MATH1020

and MATH1510 in Term 1, 2016-17

Attendance Taking

• Imposed on Faculty Foundation courses, i.e.

ENGG1100, ENGG1110, ENGG1310 and

ENGG1410.

• At least 50% of attendance is required

• Attendance less than 50% will FAIL the whole

course regardless of academic performance

• The best strategy is to attend all classes! If you

are not sure about your attendance, check with

the teaching assistants or the course teachers.

Aims of ELITE Stream

• To nurture outstanding engineering students

• To develop their potentials through

• additional challenging coursework and

• invaluable extra curricular activities

• For students admitted under the 4-year

curriculum since 2012-13

• To join the Stream in the first term of study:

– HKDSE entrants who have achieved in HKDSE Level

• 5* or above in Mathematics AND another one Science

subjects (Extended Module I/II could be counted as one

subject) AND one elective subject

• PLUS Level 4 or above in any two of the remaining core

subjects; OR

– Any entrants admitted with renewable tuition scholarship

• Those with extraordinary performance other than the above

admission results may be considered

• Students are required to complete a minimum

of 21 units of courses as follows:

at most 6 units of courses at 1000-2000 level and

at least 6 units of courses at 3000-4000 level

b) 3 units of BMEG/CENG/CSCI/ELEG/ENGG/IERG/

MAEG/SEEM courses at 5000 level

Stream / Course Administration

• Interested students need to approach the Faculty Office

(FO) to fill out a Stream Application Form

• Faculty Office shall be responsible for the eligibility check

• All applicants must be reviewed by the Stream Director

• Students can then obtain a Course Registration Form from

the FO before the end of add/ drop period for course

registration

• For courses that does not require course teachers’ approval

1. approach the FO for course registration

• For courses that requires course teachers’ approval

1. approach individual course teachers to obtain their consent first

2. Teachers would sign on the form only if they accept the student into

their ESTR course

3. ELITE students must submit the approved course registration form to

FO before the end of add/drop period

No late request shall be entertained

Course Delivery

• ELITE Course Code: ESTR

• Delivery Format:i. Mirror Format

o Same timetable as the ordinary course, i.e., shared teaching

o Enrolled students would be given additional and more difficult works, and different assessments (e.g. more difficult exams)

o An extra and separate 45-min teaching will be arranged for ELITE students

ii. Real Format

o Timetable of ESTR course is different from the ordinary course

o Enrolled students would attend separate lectures and be given additional and more difficult works and different assessments (e.g. more difficult exams)

• Can I apply if my HKDSE results / Major GPA does not

meet the entrance requirement?

• Yes. If you have other extraordinary performance or

significant contributions to the Faculty, your application will

be considered by the Stream Director.

• Is there any policies that ELITE students must follow?

• Yes. Policies will be updated in regular basis and ELITE

students shall refer to the ELITE website for the most up-to-

date policies.

• Possible. Starting from 2016-17, non-ELITE Engineering

official record on your academic transcript.
