T he Faculty of Engineering provide an extensive range of Faculty, Department and Industry based scholarships that are available to a wide range of

students who are either new to Strathclyde, or current students already studying in the Faculty. Scholarships are on offer to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This brochure will list those that are available for students studying within the Faculty.

As an undergraduate student, scholarships can assist you during your time at university and with your future career. Scholarships can provide you with annual bursaries to help with your studies, as well as providing financial assistance when purchasing books and software. Several scholarships even offer paid internships and possible graduate recruitment opportunities.

Many scholarships include industry placements, sometimes lasting up to several weeks, giving you an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and contact with industry. This allows you to use the knowledge and skills you gained at Strathclyde in a practical way.

As well as the scholarships listed in this brochure, there are other bursaries and prizes awarded to students through departments, the Faculty and the University, which may vary year on year. More details on these can be obtained by speaking to your Department.

As well as the Faculty, Department and Industry scholarships that are shown in this brochure, there are a number of University wide scholarships that Engineering applicants and students can apply for, competing with students from other Faculties within the University. Many other companies and societies also provide UK wide scholarships that Strathclyde Engineering students are able to apply for. Please note that you can only apply for a scholarship once you have applied for a place on a full-time programme through the University of Strathclyde’s admission process and have been offered either a conditional or unconditional place. Current students are not eligible for this particular scholarship.

Students who receive full sponsorship from a government office, embassy, educational establishment or an employer are not eligible for this scholarship.

Faculty of Engineering Excellence Scholarships* The Faculty of Engineering is offering a substantial number of scholarships for new entry, self-funded, full international tuition fee paying students with excellent academic qualifications who have applied for a relevant programme of study. Students maybe eligible for a Faculty of Engineering Excellence Scholarship (FEES) of up to approximately £4,000 towards their tuition fees for the first year of their programme of study. Undergraduate and postgraduate research students will receive an additional £1,500 for each subsequent year of study.

This scholarship is open to students joining undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research programmes in any of the Faculty’s eight departments.

BP Scholarships*

BP is one of the largest producers of oil and gas in the world. They employ people across six continents and own multiple refineries and petrochemical plants around the globe, a fleet of 80 ships and tens of thousands of miles of pipeline.

Who is eligible? Second year students studying on selected MEng programmes in the Departments of

Engineering

Students must maintain a 2.1 average for the duration of their studies and failure to do so could result in the scholarship being terminated.

What is the value? Successful students will receive up to £9,000, with £3,000 awarded for each year of study (maximum three years). Students will also be invited to a number of events with BP throughout the year.

How many are available? There are up to 10 BP scholarships available each year.

How can you apply? The application process opens in semester 1 and eligible students will be notified by email when applications are open and how to apply.

Who is eligible? All second year students studying a BEng programme or third year students studying an MEng programme in the Faculty of Engineering. Applicants do not need to be UK citizens but you must be eligible to pay UK home tuition fees and ordinarily reside in the UK.

What is the value? £5,000 over three years and an annual training and networking weekend at which all the current scholarship holders from the different year groups are brought together.

How many are available? Number varies every year and students will be competing with students from other institutions.

How can you apply? Students can apply through the website http://www.raeng.org.uk/grants-and-prizes/schemes-for-students Shortlisted candidates will then be required to attend an interview and assessment centre.

Royal Academy of Engineering - Engineering Leaders Scholarships* As the UK’s national academy for engineering, The Royal Academy of Engineering bring together the most successful and talented engineers from across the engineering sectors for a shared purpose: to advance and promote excellence in engineering.

The programme aims to provide support for engineering undergraduate students in UK universities who have the potential to become leaders in engineering and who are able to act as role models for future engineers. These scholarships help ambitious and inspiring engineering undergraduates to undertake an accelerated personal development programme.

Recipients will get the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to fulfil their potential, helping them to move into engineering leadership positions in UK industry soon after graduation.

Spirit AeroSystems Scholarship*

Spirit AeroSystems are one of the largest non-OEM manufacturers and suppliers of aerospace components in the world. A $7 billion company with more than 16,000 highly skilled employees. Spirit has facilities in the U.S., U.K., France and Malaysia. The scale, volume and variety of Spirit’s programs tell the story of modern aerospace manufacturing- from aluminium structures built with the latest robotics technology, to the most advanced composite production and curing techniques.

In its Prestwick, Scotland location, Spirit produces leading edge and trailing edge structures of the Airbus A320 family and wing structures for the Boeing 767. The Prestwick site also has responsibility for the design and production of the leading edge structure of the Airbus A350 and is finalising plans for production of a new Airbus work package for spoilers.

Spirit is focused on areas of research and development that specifically address current customer needs and anticipate opportunities for programs of the future. Spirit recently announced plans to build the Aerospace Innovation Centre at the Prestwick location to support growth in research and technology, positioning the business at the forefront of aerospace technology.

The Institution of Engineering & Technology*

IMechE Undergraduate Scholarships*

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) offer a range of prizes, scholarships and bursaries designed to support and reward students, graduates, academics and practitioners studying engineering and technology at university.

Diamond Jubilee Scholarships of up to at least £1,000 are available for UK pupils/college leavers with Highers, Advanced Highers, A-levels or IB starting an accredited IET degree. Undergraduate degree programmes from the Departments of Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management are accredited. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is the fastest growing professional engineering institution in the UK. The Royal Institute of British ArchitectsThe Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) offer a range of prizes, scholarships and bursaries designed to support and reward students, graduates, academics and practitioners studying architecture at university.

These schemes are designed to support the work of the RIBA in promoting educational standards and encouraging students, academics and practitioners to exceed them.

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in ScotlandThe Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) is the professional body for all chartered architects in Scotland and is the foremost architectural professional institute in the country dealing with architecture and the built environment. The RIAS has charitable status and fosters the promotion of the profession and the study and development of Scotland’s Architecture. Department of Biomedical Engineering Specific Scholarships

Biomedical Engineering Overseas Awards* Who is eligible? Overseas applicants for entry to the BEng or MEng in Biomedical Engineering or to the BSc (Hons) in Prosthetics and Orthotics.

What is the value? Up to £4,000 contribution towards fees in each year of study.

How many are awarded each year? There will be awards available for students applying to study on both the Biomedical Engineering programmes, and to the Prosthetics and Orthotics programme. The number of scholarships available for each will vary each year.

CNOOC International, the international division of CNOOC Limited, is a global energy company with operations in Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe. Their successful growth as an upstream oil and gas producer has been achieved by consistently finding and developing world-class assets.

The business is focused on safely exploring and producing from conventional offshore, unconventional and oil sands assets and the growth strategy is to safely and sustainably develop their high-quality portfolio to deliver energy for all.

Who is eligible?Scottish first year students studying in the Department of Chemical & Process Engineering who reside in a low-income household and are eligible to claim for a SAAS bursary. Students must maintain a 2.1 average for the duration of their studies and failure to do so could result in the scholarship being terminated.

What is the value?£2,000 per annum up to a maximum of four years. Students will also be offered, but are under no obligation to accept, a summer internship and mentoring.

The family of the late John Evans Whigham, an alumnus of the University, have created a scholarship in his name to support second year Engineering Academy students studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. The ambition of the fund is to assist students to reach their full potential.

Who is eligible?Second year students studying on the Engineering Academy programme in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering who meet one of the University’s widening participation categories. Only open to students who are applying for or are undertaking a summer placement.

Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Specific Scholarships

Institution of Civil Engineers QUEST Scholarships*

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is a registered charity that strives to promote and progress civil engineering. They believe that civil engineers are “at the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skills and professional expertise.”

The ICE QUEST scholarships have supported hundreds of civil engineering students, many of which are now working in the industry.

Who is eligible? Applicants who hold a conditional or unconditional offer for the first year of an undergraduate ICE accredited degree can apply. What is the value?Successful applicants are sponsored by a civil engineering or construction company for the duration of their studies. Companies arrange work experience placements every year during the summer holidays and offer professional training and guidance. How many are available? The number available each year varies and students will be competing with those from other institutions.

How do you apply? Applicants are required to submit an application form, along with a reference from your school or college, to the ICE. The Robert and Linda Gair Scholarship Fund*

Who is eligible?Scottish second year students studying in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering who have improved their academic performance in first year and who meet one of the University’s widening participation categories.

How many are available?One scholarship will be awarded per annum.

Sir William Arrol Bursary*

Who is eligible? All UK first year students in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering can apply.

What is the value? £1,000 is awarded to successful students for each year of their studies (up to £5,000 if studying a five-year MEng degree).

How many are available? One is awarded each year, so up to five students will be in receipt of the bursary at any one time.

How do you apply? First year students are invited to apply in their first semester by submitting an application form, available from the Department.

Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Specific Scholarships

Whitworth Scholarships*

A number of scholarships are available to support engineering apprentices who have recently served at least a two-year engineering apprenticeship who wish to further their careers by undertaking an engineering degree level programme.

Who is eligible? Applicants wishing to study Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering that have recently completed a two-year apprenticeship. Must be a British, Commonwealth or European citizen and normally reside in the UK and have lived in the UK for at least three years.

What is the value? £5,450 a year for up to four years.

How many are available? The number varies from year to year and applicants will be competing with those from other institutions.

The James and Lillian Hosea Memorial Scholarship*

Who is eligible?Mature students (over the age of 22) in their first year studying in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering who derive from a widening access background with evidence of financial need for the scholarship.

What is the value?£1,250 per annum for the duration of the course.

How many are available?One scholarship is available.

Xilinx Scholarship *

Xilinx Inc is the leading developer of FPGA technology. It offers three sponsorship opportunities of up to £2,500 each to third year students on any of our undergraduate degrees. Candidates should be interested in FPGAs, System on Chip (SoC) technology, Software Defined Radio and Embedded Systems.

In addition to sponsorship, Xilinx funded summer internships are also available for third year students in the Department.

MathWorks Internships*

Mathworks, the leading engineering software company and developers of MATLAB and Simulink, offer up to three sponsored summer internships located at its Glasgow office. Third year students on any of our undergraduate degrees interested in signal processing, communications, FPGA and software defined radios are eligible to apply.

IET Power Academy* Strathclyde is a founding member of the Academy, and the only university in Scotland to be a full member. Out of 600+ scholarships awarded since its inception in 2004, over 230 of them have gone to Strathclyde, almost three times as many as the next most successful university!

Who is eligible? All students within the Department are eligibleto apply provided they are qualified to work in the UK.

What is the value? The programme includes a £3,000 scholarship, an 8-10 week paid summer placement with the sponsoring company and attendance at a two-day summer conference, for each year of study. It also puts students in contact with industry mentors through a series of local and national networking events.

How do you apply? Meet with industry partners at a Scholarship Fair in early October. Attend the follow-up Q & A session mid-October to find out about the application process, eligibility criteria and submission deadines. For more information visit www.theiet.org/poweracademy

The Academy is a unique partnership betweenindustry and academia which seeks to address theshortfall in engineering expertise in the power andenergy sector. This is achieved by attracting newtalent into the industry, primarily atundergraduate level and ultimately leading tograduate employment.

The Academy is hosted and managed by theInstitution of Engineering and Technology (IET),the UK’s leading professional body for electricaland electronic engineers. It brings togetherselected UK universities and 15 key sector powercompanies to provide a programme of financialsupport, technical training, work placements andbusiness education for students.

Subjects taught in the universities relevant to the sectorinclude Power Electronics, Power System Analysis, Power System Protection, and Generation and Transmission of Electricity.

American Bureau of Shipping Scholarship Programme*

Who is eligible? Current students about to commence fourth or fifth year in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering.

What is the value? A considerable bursary will be available; the amount will vary each year.

How many are available? Two are available each year.

How do you apply? When the time comes to apply, students will be informed by the Department and given the opportunity to submit an application to the Department who will select the successful students.

Department of Naval Architecture,Ocean & Marine Engineering Specific Scholarships

Dr C.H. ParkScholarships*

Dr C.H. Park, President and CEO of Samsung Engineering, Korea, has kindly agreed to fund two Dr C.H. Park scholarships per year to students studying in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering at Strathclyde.

Who is eligible? All undergraduate students studying in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering.

What is the value? £3,500 is awarded to successful students.

How many are available? Two scholarships are available each year.

John Blackburn MainScholarship*Through the generosity of the family of Mr John Blackburn Main, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) has set up a fund to support students from the Department to gain work experience overseas, preferably in a shipyard or related environment in the Far East.

Who is eligible? Current students in third or fourth year who are spending between one month and three months in a different country to help with their project work. There is a preference for students to go to ship yards in the Far East, although it is not necessary. At the end of the placement, each scholarship holder is required to submit a technical report.

What is the value? Up to £3,000 is awarded to cover expenses such as travel, accommodation, insurance and day-to-day living.

How many are available? Up to four are made available each year.

Who is eligible? First year students in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering who come from a less advantaged background.

What is the value?£2,000 per annum for a period of three years (£6,000 in total).

How many are available?One scholarship is available per annum.

How do you apply?The application process opens in semester 1 and eligible students will be notified by email when applications are open and how to apply.

The Shipwrights Scholarship*

Who is eligible? Second year students in the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering who are from a low income background and/or have found themselves in financial difficulty.

What is the value?£2,000 per annum for a period of three years (£6,000 in total).

How many are available?One scholarship is available per annum.

ScottishPower Masters Scholarships Programme** The ScottishPower Scholarships Programme aims to help train a new generation of professionals capable of driving the transformation towards a sustainable energy model and who have a desire to develop their career in the power industry.

The Scholarships for Masters Studies in the UK programme supports the education of young people and provides them with experience that will give them access to employment in the power sector.

Who is eligible? The programme provides scholarships for postgraduate studies in the UK at selected universities in the following areas:

Strathclyde Progression Scholarships*The Progression Scholarship offers a 10% tuition fee discount to home and international Strathclyde undergraduate students who are progressing directly to a full-time postgraduate taught programme.

Students must be self funding and not in receipt of any other scholarship, discount or funding from another source.

Biomedical Engineering International Excellence Awards* Who is eligible? Open to well-qualified full-time overseas students joining a one-year MSc or MRes programme in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Candidates must register for the programme prior to any awards being allocated.

What is the value? Up to £4,000 awarded towards tuition fees.

How many are available? Numbers available vary each year.

How do you apply? Candidates can apply for the award through the Department. Selection is based on academic merit and personal achievements.

Who is eligible? Well-qualified applicants from India joining any of the one-year full-time MSc programmes in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

The Data Lab Scholarships*

The Data Lab MSc is a collaborative effort between The Data Lab and eleven Scottish universities, with the aim of developing the next generation of data science talent and skills required by industry in Scotland. Through the collaboration, each university has developed specialist MSc programmes based on its strengths and capabilities, and with the support of The Data Lab facilitates industry involvement with Scottish organisations, provides funding and resources for students. The MSc in Machine Learning & Deep Learning is one of the recognised Data Lab programmes. This is delivered in partnership between the Departments of Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Computer & Information Sciences at Strathclyde.

Who is eligible?Scottish & EU students only joining the MSc in Machine Learning & Deep Learning programme on a full-time basis.

What is the value?The scholarship covers full tuition fees. Attendance at Data Lab events is required, including business ready skills training & Data Talent Scotland. Placements in Scottish industry are available.

How do you apply?Applicants must hold an offer for the MSc in Machine Learning & Deep Learning before they can be considered for one of these scholarships. Students do not need to apply separately for these awards; they are allocated by the Department based on the academic performance, and professional and personal achievements of the student, as outlined in their application.

Biomedical Engineering Awards for China and Malaysia*

DMEM Excellence Scholarship*

Who is eligible? Open to well-qualified full-time overseas students joining a one-year MSc in the Department of Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management. Candidates must register for the programme prior to any awards being allocated.

What is the value? Up to £1,500 awarded towards tuition fees.

How many are available? Numbers available vary each year.

How do you apply? Candidates can apply for the award through the Department. Selection is based on academic merit and personal achievements.

Presidents Scholarships*

To recognise academic achievement and to attract the best engineering students from around the world, the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering is offering a number of Presidents Scholarships for international students.

The Presidents Scholarship is unique to Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of Strathclyde as we are the only UK Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department to have had five past Presidents of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The value of each award is £2,000, and shall be a contribution towards tuition fees. The Presidents Scholarships are open to all well-qualified international applicants joining the one year full-time postgraduate MSc programmes.

Students who apply for the Faculty of Engineering Excellence Scholarship (FEES) will automatically be considered for the Presidents Scholarship, more information about the FEES scholarship is available on page 5 of this brochure.

Dean’s Excellence Awards for India*

Who is eligible? All well-qualified applicants from India joining any of the one-year full-time postgraduate MSc programmes in the Departments of

What is the value? Up to £4,000 is awarded to successful candidates.

How do you apply? Applicants must first have an offer for an MSc programme in an eligible Department. They can then apply by submitting an application form, which is available for download from both of the departmental websites.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship (MSc Hydrogeology by Distance Learning)*

Who is eligible? Well-qualified candidates from Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe applying for the MSc in Hydrogeology Distance Learning programme.

What is the value? A full scholarship is available to cover all costs associated with study, including tuition fees.

How many are available? Five are available each year, applicants will be competing with candidates from other institutions.

How do you apply? Candidates must apply for the scholarship through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website at http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/apply/distance-learning/ Candidates must also apply to MSc in Hydrogeology Distance Learning programme.
