A MESSAGE FROM:THE PRESIDENT AND THE PROVOST

Faculty Awards Day is a time to celebrate faculty excellence across all the missions

of Baylor College of Medicine. More than any other factor, the commitment,

experience and quality of our faculty determine the success of our learners, and

our College. Fulfilling our mission depends on physicians, health professionals,

scientists, educators and scholars reaching the highest levels of career performance

and personal satisfaction. When Baylor faculty members succeed, so does the

Baylor community.

The coronavirus pandemic prevents us from gathering together to honor our

colleagues this year. But in these extraordinary times, it is more important than ever

to recognize outstanding contributions with professionalism to education, service

and clinical care. Thank you for all that you do.

Paul Klotman, M.D. President & CEO Executive Dean

Alicia Monroe, M.D. Provost Senior Vice President for Academic & Faculty Affairs

FAREED MAHMOOD KHAN, M.B.B.S.Associate Professor, Vice Chair for Community Health and Associate Residency Program Director in Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine

Dr. Fareed Mahmood Khan has dedicated his career to medical student and resident education as an associate professor, practicing family physician and educator in the Department of Family and Community Medicine (FCM) for more than 20 years. His mantra has been to teach medical knowledge while emphasizing compassionate conversations, ethical and moral decision-making, professionalism, enhanced communication skills, problem solving and critical thinking.

Dr. Khan has held varied teaching and mentoring roles that span his entire career at Baylor while serving as an attending physician at Northwest Community Health Center and at Ben Taub General Hospital. In all settings, he practices evidence-based, patient-centered, compassionate care. Dr. Khan is known as an excellent family physician in the ambulatory and inpatient setting and as an active teacher of medical students and residents. He has demonstrated leadership in a number of academic positions: Associate Director of the FCM Clerkship, Director of the FCM Sub-Internship elective, Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. Currently, he serves as Associate Director of the Family Residency Program and as Director of two elective courses: Care of the Underserved elective, and History of Medicine elective. He is also the Vice Chair for Community Health for FCM and the Assistant Chief of Staff of Ambulatory Care Services for Harris Health

System. He has served as a Faculty Senator. His advocacy on behalf of underserved patients has taken him on over 30 trips to rural Honduras since 2001 and to China to promote primary care.

Dr. Khan has a heart for learners. During his time as Residency Director he transformed the residency program from one that was on probation to one that is nationally recognized for its excellence. He received two Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) grants to expand the residency and develop a Patient-Centered Home Curriculum. The culture of the residency changed in a positive manner during his tenure as director. His themes, which he regularly communicates during “Khanversations,” as residents fondly call them, include the ideas that “compassion is a muscle that gets stronger with use” (Jonathan Safran Foer) and that this residency program is the “family of family medicine.” His openness and availability for learners has allowed him to have numerous impromptu mentorship and career guidance conversations. He is constantly advocating for his team, promoting them for awards, helping them with life decisions and supporting them when they need testimonials. He has been able to retain over a third of all residency graduates to follow his example and continue to work at Harris Health System in service of the indigent patient. He has been a pillar of support and a mentor and advisor to all who seek his guidance.

THE BARBARA AND CORBIN J. ROBERTSON, JR.

Presidential Award for Excellence in Education

One of Dr. Gad Shaulsky’s main career goals is to help train the next generation of biomedical scientists. Since joining Baylor College of Medicine in 1997, he has been deeply involved in various aspects of student and postdoctoral training.

Dr. Shaulsky was the co-Director of the Molecular and Human Genetics Graduate Program from 1999 to 2005 and has been the Program Director since 2005 (the program currently is named Genetics and Genomics). This program is responsible for the training of about 80 graduate students and is funded, in part, by a T32 training grant that he has directed since 2006. Between 2011 and 2016, he served as Assistant Dean of Admissions at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Shaulsky has trained 17 graduate students and 11 postdoctoral fellows in the past and is currently training one Ph.D. student in his lab. He has served on more than 30 doctoral thesis advisory committees. All but one of his past trainees are still involved in some aspect of biomedical sciences, including three independent investigators, two physicians, two in the biomedical industry, three in science policy and communications, and several postdoctoral fellows.

Dr. Shaulsky has been honored twice with the Michael E. DeBakey Excellence in Research Award and last year was recognized with the Kenneth Scott Graduate Mentor Award.

The Genetics and Genomics Graduate Program is dedicated to excellence in science while increasing diversity in the science workforce. It has trained many students from underrepresented (UR) groups, including students with disabilities. In the past couple of years, 20% of the program’s entering class were UR students, thanks in part to Dr. Shaulsky’s recruitment efforts through active participation in venues such as ABRCMS, SACNAS and The Biomed Virtual Grad School Fair. His lab has hosted several UR post-baccalaureate students in recent years and most of them have gone on to graduate school at Baylor and other universities.

Dr. Shaulsky’s personal participation and dedication to increasing diversity serve as an example to younger faculty in the graduate program and at Baylor in general.

Dr. Lynn Zechiedrich is passionate about mentoring and teaching. An award-winning mentor, Dr. “Z” is sought out by trainees at all levels. She has hosted and advised over 250 scientists in her 23-year career at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), including professors on sabbatical, postdoctoral and medical fellows, and graduate, post-baccalaureate, undergraduate, and high school students. She has published and lectured nationally on mentoring, was BCM’s BRASS Mentor of the Year in 2013, and a Woman of Excellence Awardee in 2017. Dr. Zechiedrich has taught in 13 different courses in the BCM graduate and medical schools.

Teaching excellence is in her genes—her mother was an award-winning Spanish professor, her father an award-winning high school teacher of AP physics and AP chemistry, and her only sibling, Leonard, was the U.S. AP Biology high school teacher of the year.

Dr. Zechiedrich arrived at BCM in 1997 after receiving her BS from the University of Arkansas, her PhD at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine with Neil Osheroff and performing postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley with the late Nicholas Cozzarelli. Her mentors were outstanding teachers and noted experts in the field of DNA topoisomerases. She continues her work on DNA topoisomerases, major antibiotic and anticancer drug targets. Her research evolved to include gene therapy using Minivectors, small circular DNAs with many applications for which she holds multiple patents.

Dr. Zechiedrich has trained scientists from diverse fields, including medicine, mathematics, statistics, physics, structural biology, and computer science. Her transdisciplinary and innovative research led to her election in 2017 as a Fellow in the National Academy of Inventors.

She has published more than 66 articles and book chapters and given over 180 invited talks. She served on numerous grant review committees, reviews for 48 different peer-reviewed journals, and served on multiple editorial boards.

As an Ambassador for Inclusion and Diversity for BCM, Dr. Zechiedrich is committed to an environment of inclusive excellence.

Lynn enjoys scuba diving with her family and has played flute in the Texas Medical Center Orchestra for 20 years.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN Award-Winning FACULTY MEMBER

If Faculty Awards Day has inspired you to excel at Baylor College of Medicine, our top physicians, scientists and scholars have a few words of advice: Keep informed and get involved.

READ FACULTY COMMONS AND NEWSLINK, the weekly e-newsletters, to keep up-to-date on developments at the College.

CONTACT YOUR FACULTY SENATOR. Every department, center, school and affiliate hospital has representatives to update you on new initiatives and listen to your thoughts and suggestions.

WORK ON GETTING THAT PROMOTION. The Office of Faculty Development offers career planning workshops and one-on-one coaching.

SERVE ON COMMITTEES. Speak with your chair or center director or the committee chair regarding opportunities for involvement.

TAKE ON NEW ROLES. Browse internal postings, volunteer options, training classes and other opportunities for growth.

PARTICIPATE IN A SURVEY. College leaders take seriously the results of faculty satisfaction surveys, “best of” lists and other feedback devices. Your opinion matters.

LEARN AT A LECTURE. From Nobel laureates to cultural ambassadors, the campus hosts guest speakers on a wide variety of topics throughout the year.

BE PROFESSIONAL. Respect sets the standard for how we treat each other. It fosters collaborative research, compassionate patient care and a safe and supportive learning and work environment.

EMAIL DR. KLOTMAN at [email protected]. Let the President know what is going well and what needs work.
