    straw-bale buildingwhat is it?It is a building technique that uses strawbales (or even hay bales) for walls whichcan be load-bearing, or used to infill a timberframe. It was pioneered in the US mid-west inthe 19

    thcentury by farmers whose only

    building material was the waste from theirwheat crop. The buildings were intended tobe temporary until conventional buildingmaterials were delivered. However, theyfound them to be solid, warm andcomfortable, and many continued to live inthem in preference to traditional houses.Walls can be rendered with earth or lime toprotect them from the elements (see picture).Three common misconceptions are that theyare a fire risk, they can house vermin, andthey are not durable. None are true.US tests have found that even unrenderedstraw-bale walls are less of a fire risk thantimber walls (rendered walls are no moreflammable than bricks). Mice and rats are notattracted to straw as it is not a food source.They are attracted to holes though, but as

    long as walls are rendered, they wont housevermin. As for durability, there are 100-year-old straw-bale houses in the States. Thewetter climate of the UK presents more of achallenge, but weatherproof rendering and agood moisture barrier means that there willbe no problem, whatever the wall material. In

    theory, there is no reason why a well-builtand rendered building with a solid roof

    shouldnt last for at least 100 years andpossibly a lot more. Furthermore, anyproblems can be rectified very easily.Other benefits: cheap (bales cost around 1each); easy and quick to build by non-experts; good soundproofing; they look good(like a cottage but at a fraction of the price);easy to modify; and each one is unique nolittle boxes with straw bales.

    dont need environmentally-damaginginsulation materials, as straw has a muchhigher insulation value than brick orconcrete; also lower heating bills / reducedCO2 emissions

    biodegradable natural material, can be locally sourced,

    and if used in combination with othernatural materials like timber, earth, slateand lime, means no toxins or sick buildingsyndrome'

    what can I do?If you intend to live in your straw-balebuilding, the first thing is to talk to your localplanning officer. Getting planning permissiondepends on the local authority, the planningofficer, and where you want to build, and not

    so much what you intend to build it from.There is nothing specific to straw-baleconstruction in the Building Regulations, butthey certainly conform to criteria concerninghealth and safety, fire resistance and energyefficiency. Problems may arise either withneighbours or planning officials who areaverse to anything new in their area. On theplus side, your ideas may fit in with the localAgenda 21 plan, especially regardinginsulation levels and the use of natural

    materials.When it comes to designing and building,there are many options for every part of thehouse. Foundations can be concrete, flint andlime, brick or timber pillars, or car tyres withrammed earth (foundations dont need to beas deep as for brick houses). Roofs can be

    slate, tile, corrugated metal or bitumen,shingle or thatch. Floors can be concrete,earth or floorboards on joists.

    Bales are laid with each course offset, likebricks, with hazel stakes pinning the balestogether. Smaller bales can be made using abaling needle (see picture). Recycledmaterials can be used, including timber,doors and windows. Frames can be insertedduring the wall-building process, and doorsand windows fitted later.You can self-build entirely, invite lots offriends or hold an event, or get professionalhelp with plumbing, carpentry or electrics.

    In any case, its a good idea to readeverything you can first, or attend a course.
