“Concrete steps were taken in 2018 towards the sustainable, metropolitan port of the future.”

Koos van der Steenhoven,Chairman of the Board of Commissioners

Port of Amsterdam has three core tasks as manager and developer of the port:• Development of the port region as an attractive

location for businesses, and constantly improving the service to clients;

• Construction, maintenance, and renewal of the physical infrastructure and management of Amsterdam’s port area;

• Development of smooth, safe, and environmentally responsible shipping traffic in the North Sea Canal Area (NSCA), including regulations and enforcement. CNB North Sea Canal Area (Central Nautical Management) has assigned this task to the Harbour Master Division of the Port of Amsterdam.

Digitisation

As the Amsterdam Metropolitan Port, we are a logistical

junction with a global reach, a high-quality industrial region, and

a multi-faceted service provider for the city.

As the Port of Amsterdam, we develop the port area, while simultaneously ensuring safe, smooth, and sustainable shipping traffic. These various roles have a single common goal: to create as much value as possible for society, the region, and the city in general, and for the port area in particular.

Our value creation model provides insight into the manner in which we create added value for our stakeholders in the Amsterdam metropolitan region, the Netherlands, and in a Western European and international context.

Added value

The port of Amsterdam has one of the best port infrastructures in the world, with multimodal connections to the hinterland. The space available to issue and the existing energy infrastructure make it an attractive place to invest in the future, for example to accelerate the port’s development into the logistical motor of the Amsterdam region, energy transition, and the creation of a circular centre. The creation of added value focuses on reinforcing the existing market clusters and networks, innovation and diversification.

That in turn makes it possible to attract promising new market clusters and businesses. In order to speed up the energy transition and circular economy, value can also be intentionally reduced, primarily by reducing the coal transshipment position. Our added value is driven by our strategy, with its four strategic roadmaps: Energy transition, Circular economy, Logistics & accessibility, and Digitisation. In accordance with our strategy for 2017-2021, these roadmaps will result in a smooth, smart, and clean port. The realisation of these goals is the core of our medium-term strategy. In so doing, we will build a future-proof port that provides ever-greater value for the city, our clients, and the surrounding area: a metropolitan port for Amsterdam.

Anticipating promising trends and developments

Strategic roadmaps

In our rapidly changing world, the context in which ports function is constantly changing as well. There are two overarching trends that affect the important markets for our port: energy transition and the circular economy.

Two other important developments that affect our attractiveness to businesses are logistics & accessibility and digitisation. In order to anticipate for these trends and developments, we created four strategic roadmaps in 2018. We then formed multi-disciplinary teams around each road map, which look for activities to develop over the short term (quick wins and no-regret), as well as activities for the medium- and long-term.

Focusing on roadmaps enables us to direct our projects and partnerships towards realising our ambitions, and therefore to realise our business strategy even more effectively.

The four strategic roadmaps are:• Energy transition• Circular economy• Logistics & accessibility• Digitisation

11

Page 8: Facts and Figures 2018 - Port of Amsterdamprimarily by reducing the coal transshipment position. Our added value is driven by our strategy, with its four strategic roadmaps: Energy

Energy transition

Renewable energy and sustainable raw materials are the essential pillars upon which the construction of a new energy- and industry system must rest. Port of Amsterdam is already the largest energy port in Europe. In order to reinforce our role as an energy port, we are looking for new cargo flows and methods for generating sustainable energy, in collaboration with the companies in the port, as well as other partners.

Our role in the energy transitionPort of Amsterdam has set aside space for, and invests in, infrastructure and partnerships with clients, start-ups, and other partners to become a sustainable international energy junction. We do so based on the following pillars:• Upscaling sustainable energy production and

storage;• Attracting and facilitating the production of

sustainable fuels and circular raw materials;• Developing the infrastructure necessary for the

sustainable transition.

Progress in 2018Based on these pillars, in 2018 we installed a large number of extra square meters of solar panels in the port area together with our clients. We have also made agreements about the location of a biomass plant using wood waste and trimmings as fuel. We have also begun conducting studies of the feasibility of a 100 MW hydrogen plant near Tata Steel, and the port has been prepared for the installation of an LNG bunker facility for seagoing vessels in 2019. These are just a few examples of how we make space available for activities that fit within a sustainable energy system and fuel chain.

Trends and developmentsIn and around the port, we have seen how the generation and consumption of energy are changing: the energy transition is progressing at a rapid pace. The generation of electricity from sustainable sources, such as solar and wind power, is increasing in part due to technological developments and increases in scale. The rise of these renewables means that there is less demand for conventional generation, and the demand for coal is decreasing. We can see that reflected in the transshipment figures, with a decrease in coal transshipment for the past four years in a row. The industry in the North Sea Canal Area also faces its own sustainability challenges.Together with regional industry, governments, and network companies gathered in the regional industry climate round table, Port of Amsterdam has proposed an ambitious sustainability programme.

The industry’s CO2 emissions can be halved by 2030, thanks to innovative developments in the field of energy efficiency, electrification, use of residual heat, hydrogen,

and re-utilisation of CO2. The timely availability of sustainable electricity from offshore wind farms is essential in order to achieve that goal.

13

Page 9: Facts and Figures 2018 - Port of Amsterdamprimarily by reducing the coal transshipment position. Our added value is driven by our strategy, with its four strategic roadmaps: Energy

Circular economy

The transition to a circular economy is fortunately inevitable.Obtaining primary fuels is increasingly expensive, and leaves major scars around the world, and waste flows all too often have a disastrous effect on ecosystems.

Driven by government policy and the innovative power of the business community, important steps are being taken towards the realisation of the government’s ambition to make the Netherlands completely circular by 2050. Through our strategy, we will be able to take advantage of the circular economy and actively invest in its acceleration.

Trends and developmentsAlthough we are making good progress, we are still too dependent on primary raw materials, such as coal, oil and building materials. When we look at the transshipment and land use in the port, these types of raw materials are still dominant, but as the transition to a circular economy progresses, their quantities will continue to decrease.

Our role in the circular economyPort of Amsterdam believes it is important to actively prioritise diversification. That means attracting new businesses, but more importantly supporting our current clients in finding new opportunities presented by the circular economy.

Progress in 2018We can already observe the transition occurring in the port, especially in the processing of waste flows (residential, commercial, and building waste) from the region and abroad. A growing number of companies are working on the high-quality utilisation of waste flows; not only new companies, but also companies that have been at the port for many years. For example, IGES Amsterdam has begun construction on a plant that processes unrecyclable plastic into fuel, and Plastic Recycling Amsterdam has recently announced its plans to build a state-of-the-art installation in the port, where plastics can be separated with 99% purity. This will make the port of Amsterdam an increasingly important circular plastic hub.

Logistics & accessibility

Easy accessibility to the port remains a crucial factor in the success of the port’s clients and of the port as a whole. But easy accessibility is not a given. The Amsterdam metropolitan region is growing rapidly, both in terms of residents and in commercial activity. Transport of persons and goods is therefore increasing rapidly as well, which demands innovative solutions in which Port of Amsterdam can play an important role.

Trends and developmentsIn all of these solutions, it is vital for Port of Amsterdam that they do not negatively affect the transport of goods. For example, we are in intensive consultation with ProRail to ensure that the railway can facilitate the growth of both passenger transport and cargo transport. With the City of Amsterdam, we are also discussing the option of a connection to the banks of the IJ, as long as it does not have a negative effect on the port’s accessibility for inland barges.

Our role in logistics & accessibility In order to assure easy accessibility, we build infrastructure in our port area, advise clients about the infrastructure on their lots, and proactively participate in projects by other infrastructure managers in the port and the hinterland. We are also constantly improving our nautical services.

Progress in 2018Fortunately, the port is still easily accessible, as indicated by Samskip’s choice to begin a container shipping service between Amsterdam and England in 2018.Samskip has also begun a container rail service between Italy and Amsterdam, which is partially filled with cargo destined for the United Kingdom. In order to improve the logistical processing by clients such as Samskip in the port of Amsterdam, we have initiated the Port Performance programme together with nautical service providers. The goal is to optimise the collaboration between parties such as pilots, tugs, and Port of Amsterdam. This will make it easier to prevent delays and to guarantee logistical reliability.

DigitisationThe port of Amsterdam is a logistical and economic junction for the region. Its physical infrastructure continues to be vital, but we are also working in a time when everything and everyone is connected digitally: from social networks to the internet of things. This presents opportunities for an information ecosystem that enriches the physical connections, contributes to further growth, and takes into account the factors space, predictability, and customer satisfaction.

Our role in digitisationThe port of Amsterdam is relatively compact, which makes it easier to explore new business models based on the other roadmaps together with clients and partners. At the port of Amsterdam, we invest in start-up communities, design thinking, and prototyping

Trends and developmentsFurther digitisation intensifies the port’s international roles. We are working with our clients and partners to study how we can optimally position the port in this digital playing field. Technological innovation and digitisation are used to come up with solutions and to realise them in collaboration with clients and partners, in order to ensure that we can work faster, smarter, and cleaner and become the preferred port in Europe.

technologies such as drones, sensors, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. In so doing, we can build on an efficient operation and an optimal climate for innovation. Port of Amsterdam facilitates, invests, and brings enterprises together. The more digital we are as a port, the more flexible we can operate in a changing world.

Developments 2018Technology makes it easier to share information with one another safely; with our clients, but also with all of the other partners throughout the port chain.Due to the wide variety of information systems used by the many parties in the North Sea Canal Area, we paid special attention to the issue of cybersecurity in 2018, including the launch of a cybersecurity programme. The programme’s focus lies on the Port of Amsterdam’s IT infrastructure, awareness and resilience in the port community, and legislation pertaining to port security in the form of applying the International Ship and Port Facility Code (ISPS). We have developed innovative products in compact multi-disciplinary teams that include clients and partners, based on the principle of value creation for our clients and other stakeholders.

The Amsterdam port region is an international seaport in one of the fastest-growing metropolises in the world. After the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp and Hamburg, the port of Amsterdam is the largest in Western Europe in the Hamburg-Le Havre range. RecordsIn 2018, the port of Amsterdam once again set a new transshipment record, at 82.3 million tonnes.Together with the other ports in the North Sea Canal Area, total transshipment reached another record 101.8 million tonnes in 2018. In IJmuiden, transshipment rose 1% to 18.6 million tonnes. Beverwijk, however, experienced an 8% decrease, to 700,000 tonnes. Transshipment also decreased in Zaanstad, to 200,000 tonnes.

In 2018, the port issued more than 50 hectares to clients. The largest port-related land issues were for Katoen Natie (10.5 hectares), PARO (7 hectares) and CCN, Commodity Centre Netherlands (6 hectares). In the context of the dramatic increase in sustainable activities, significantly more land was issued for biobased and circular activities: 9.1 hectares versus 0. 4 hectares in 2017.

Rail

In 2018, 5, 400 cargo trains transported around 6 million tonnes of cargo to and from the Amsterdam port region. The type of cargo delivered by rail to and from the Amsterdam port region varies from containers to paper, steel, cocoa, cars, and liquid bulk such as ethanol and petrol. Rail cargo also includes dry bulk, such as coal, minerals, chalk and agricultural products, and recycling flows such as household waste or scrap.

The European hinterland can be reached efficiently by rail from the Amsterdam port region, as Amsterdam is connected to three European Rail Freight Corridors, and 14 port terminals have rail connections. Some public docks also have rail connections. The rail network in the Amsterdam port area has two main emplacements: Westhaven and Aziëhaven. Both emplacements are electrified, feature sufficient track length for trains of up to 750 meters, and are each connected to the other. The Aziëhaven emplacement is scheduled to be expanded over the next few years. At the Geldermalsen/Meteren junction, cargo trains from Amsterdam can switch from the mixed network to the Betuwe route, which is primarily intended for cargo trains from the Netherlands to western- and southern Germany.

New Silk RoadThe port of Amsterdam is connected to a modern variant of the historic silk road: the direct rail connection between the Chinese city of Yiwu (Shanghai region) via Germany to Amsterdam. This rail connection gives logistical clients access to East Asia. The rail connection is faster than via ship, and less expensive than via air transport.

Short sea

Port of Amsterdam’s ambition to rapidly expand its short sea container transshipment received a strong impulse in 2018. Container transshipment grew by 69%. In addition to growth at VCK Logistics, the new scheduled service by Samskip to Hull played a major role.Since March 2018, Samskip has sailed between Amsterdam and the northern English port city of Hull three times per week. The new connection will enhance the importance of Amsterdam’s hub function for the transshipment of goods. Internationally, the new short sea service will address the increasing market demand for capacity. The new scheduled service, for example, is an excellent complement to initiatives such as the New Silk Road.

Amsterdam has traditionally had strong short sea connections to Scandinavia and Great Britain. The port of Amsterdam started out as a fishing (herring) port, and over the course of the middle ages merchants began trading in wood and grain from the Baltic Sea.The short sea container service with Great Britain transports a wide range of goods between the east coast of Britain and Amsterdam. These goods are then stored, used, or shipped on to the hinterland. Poland, the Baltic states, and Russia are easily accessible via short sea connections.

Deep sea

Seagoing vessels for international shipping can make excellent use of the Amsterdam port region.

The port of Amsterdam is not affected by tides, and is only a short sail from the sea. The sailing time from the pilot station through the North Sea Canal, including passage through locks, is only 3 hours for large vessels. The terminals are easily accessible for ships with draughts of up to 14.05 meters (fresh water).

Transshipment and flows of goods

Transshipment at the port of Amsterdam and North Sea Canal Area

As the fourth-largest port in Western Europe, Amsterdam has a major responsibility to supply the national and European hinterland. As an important industrial junction, the port of Amsterdam is also a centre for innovation and value creation. The strong connections in Amsterdam between the port, trade, and the production industry, between logistics and business-financial services, make the port unique among its competitors.

Covered storageThe Amsterdam port region features four all-weather terminals. With a capacity of more than one and a half million tonnes, Amsterdam is the largest provider of covered storage in Europe.

Seagoing vessels

Each year, around 7,500 seagoing vessels visit the North Sea Canal Area. In order to ensure the speedy and safe handling of traffic, Port of Amsterdam offers 2 4/7 guidance to shipping via multi-functional patrol vessels and a high-tech traffic control system. From 12 miles at sea to the port basins in Amsterdam, Port of Amsterdam assists seagoing vessels with navigation, safety, regulations, services, communications and inspections.

Sea cruiseIn 2018, cruise passengers named Amsterdam one of the best cruise destinations in Western Europe and the British islands for the third year in a row. Whether luxury or budget, sea or river, Amsterdam is one of Europe’s top cruise destinations. Sea cruise liners are of major economic value for the city of Amsterdam and the region as a whole. Shipping companies’ expenditures on fuel, waste collection, supplies, port dues, local guides, taxi- and bus companies, and the expenditures of the ships’ passengers and crew in the city at museums, restaurants, and luxury shops add up to a total value from sea cruises in the Amsterdam of 99 million euros per year. Most cruise passengers come from Germany and Great Britain. The market for sea cruises has grown over the past few years. The opening of the new large sea lock will make Amsterdam an even more attractive port for Northern European cruises.

River cruises represent an economic value of approximately 87 million euros.

Port of Amsterdam is the owner of Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA). PTA consists of a 10,000 m2 building, 630 meters of quay, gangways, and other facilities, and serves as a multi-functional junction between land and water. The PTA was developed to welcome and handle cruise ships, and cats as a transport point and parking facility for buses. The building is also used to facilitate events.

Super yachtsDutch yacht builders are the absolute market leaders in their branch, with a global market share of 30%. Super yachts have been built in the Amsterdam port since 2017, which reinforces the region’s production industry and employment opportunities. Amsterdam is developing into a super yacht hub, with the arrival of specialised yards for construction and refitting. It is also a popular destination, as 15 super yachts visited Amsterdam in 2018.

River cruiseAmsterdam is one of the largest river cruise ports in Northwestern Europe. The number of river cruise vessels visiting the port increased again in 2018. Around half of the passengers are intercontinental, and visit Europe from the water via a river cruise vessel. Thanks to its favourable location near Schiphol airport, Amsterdam is often the start- or end point of the Rhine-Main-Danube route to Basel, Budapest, or even the Black Sea.

The port of Amsterdam is designed to accommodate the largest of the river cruise vessels, with a length of up to 135 meters.
