You can use skip counting to find multiples.

Multiples of 4: 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20…

Least Common Multiple

The smallest common multiple of two or more numbers

Least Common Multiple of 6 and 8:

6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36…

8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40…

Factors:Numbers we multiply to get a certain

number. Think, what numbers can we multiply to get 12?

1 x 12

2 x 6

3 x 4

So, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 – are FACTORS of 12.

Greatest Common Factor:The largest common factor of two or more

numbers:To find factors, build T-charts:

What is the Rhyme? Stand up and say it 6 times as a class!

When solving word problems, THINK:

1. If your answer will be larger than the given numbers you are looking for multiples.

2. If the answer is smaller that the given numbers you use factors.

EXAMPLE:

Todd and Amy volunteer at a local nursing home. Todd volunteers every 5 days and Amy volunteers every 4 days. If Todd and Amy both volunteer today, in how many days will they volunteer together again?

1. The solution will be larger than 5 and 4, so we use Multiples:

5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25…

4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24…

Todd and Amy will volunteer together in 20 days.

EXAMPLE:

The math class is making fruit baskets. The class has collected 24 oranges and 36 apples. The teacher wants the same number of oranges in every basket. The teachers wants the same amount of apples in each basket. What is the greatest number of baskets the class can make?

(THINK: You are splitting fruit! Splitting means dividing into groups.
