Thistle Bloodstock Limited

Background: The vision of former Glasgow shipyard worker Jimmy Long, who has business interests in the UAE. Thistle Bloodstock’s racing silks are inspired by the colours of Long’s favourite football club, Partick Thistle. Long has established Thistle Farm, a 127-acre breeding and training establishment in Kilkenny, Ireland. Pat Shanahan started training at Thistle Farm in 2012. Also previously had horses with Patrick Prendergast and Tracey Collins. Big Race Wins: Debutante Stakes (2012 My Special J’s) No previous Investec Derby runners Pat Shanahan (Danesfort, Co. Kilkenny)

Born: June 5, 1963 Background: Former leading Flat jockey for 33 years, won Irish Derby in 1996 on Zagreb and Irish Oaks in 1984 on Princess Pati. Rode primarily for Con Collins and Dermot Weld. Retired from the saddle in March, 2012 and appointed trainer for Thistle Bloodstock, having ridden for the organisation’s founder Jimmy Long. Ronan Whelan

Born: November 2, 1992, and raised in Monasterevin, County Kildare Background: Whelan first made

his mark on Ireland’s pony racing circuit, where he partnered no less than 95 winners and was champion

rider in 2008. On leaving school he joined trainer Jim Bolger, a man noted for guiding the early careers

of a number of jockeys (including A P McCoy), and on June 4, 2009, at the age of 16, he rode in his first

race as an apprentice on the Bolger-trained Bipasha at Leopardstown. Twenty-four hours later, at the

same racecourse, he rode his debut winner on Seachtanach for his boss. The following year he built on

that platform, yet found himself at the centre of a bizarre incident at the Curragh on Irish 2,000 Guineas

day, when stewards banned him for three days for excessive use of the whip – although he had dropped

it leaving the stalls. The stewards claimed Whelan had not revealed the loss of the stick at their initial

inquiry, but after Bolger intervened they apologised and the decision was rescinded. Two years later, in

2012 when aged 19, Whelan became Ireland’s champion apprentice with 31 wins, and gained rides in

some high-profile races – on Leitir Mor he finished third in the Group One National Stakes and second in

the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes, and he was also runner-up in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes on

Scintillula. His biggest win to date has been on the George Kent-trained Custom Cut, who in April, 2013

won the Group Three Gladness Stakes, and he has continued his association with Bolger’s stable, in

addition to taking regular rides for Pat Shanahan, Tracey Collins, Peter Fahey and Pat Martin. His mount

on Shanahan’s Carbon Dating in the 2015 Investec Derby will be his first at Epsom, although he also

rides that horse’s stablemate, Hold The Line, in the Investec Out Of The Ordinary Handicap, which follows

the big race.

William Buick

Born: July 22, 1988, in Norway. Background: Fluent in Norwegian, Danish and German as well as English. Announced as a

Godolphin retained jockey on November 9, 2014, he is riding primarily for Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby as well as John Gosden

and Saeed bin Suroor in 2015. Born in Norway on July 22, 1988, he hails from a family with lots of equestrian background. His

mother Maria became a show jumper and dressage rider, while his father Walter enjoyed a long career as a jockey, being champion

jockey eight times in Denmark and once in Norway. Scottish-born Walter Buick initially rode in Britain and was apprenticed to

Newmarket trainer Bernard Van Cutsem before moving to Norway due to the lack of race riding opportunities in Britain. He went

on to partner 1,500 winners, including 22 Classics in Scandinavia, before spending four years as a trainer at Baden-Baden in

Germany. He returned to Britain in 2001 to become a work-rider for Marcus Tregoning in Lambourn and a part-time race-reader.

William Buick rode out for his father in Germany and for Norwegian champion trainer Vido Neuroth. He would get up in the middle

of winter, ride work in sub-zero temperatures before heading to school for his studies. During the holidays, he would travel over

the Britain to ride work for Reg Hollinshead, Marcus Tregoning and Andrew Balding. He returned to Balding’s yard at Kingclere,

Berkshire, to become an apprentice jockey after leaving school at the age of 16. His first race came in August, 2006, and his first

victory came on Bank On Benny the following month at Salisbury on September 27. Following a working holiday in Florida, USA,

he returned to Britain at the start of 2007 and soon earned a reputation as one of the country’s most exciting apprentices. The

jockey gained a first Royal Ascot success on Dark Missile in the Wokingham Handicap, one of the most competitive races in the

calendar, in June, 2007, and the first Group victory came on Buccellati in the Group Three St Simon Stakes at Newbury in October,

2008. Buick had his initial ride for Godolphin at Chester on September 13, 2008, finishing fourth on subsequent Emirates Melbourne

Cup runner-up Crime Scene in a Listed race. He ended 2008 as joint-champion apprentice after a thrilling battle with David Probert,

who was also attached to the Balding stable, with 50 winners each. The jockey continued to do well and enjoyed a breakthrough

first top-level success on board the Mick Channon-trained Lahaleeb in the Grade One E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine, Canada, in

October, 2009. He was appointed stable jockey to John Gosden in January, 2010, despite never having ridden for the Newmarket

handler before. The trainer’s faith in William Buick was almost instantly rewarded as the rider partnered Dar Re Mi to glory in the

Group One Dubai Sheema Classic on World Cup night at Meydan, Dubai, three months later. William Buick enjoyed his first

Godolphin winner on May 15, 2010 with Claremont in the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury, and rode an excellent race to take

second on board stable companion Miss Jean Brodie in the Group One Darley Irish Oaks the Curragh in July of the same year.

Debussy, trained by John Gosden, captured the Group One Arlington Million under Buick in August, 2010. He gained his first Classic

success in September, 2010, with Arctic Cosmos, who stormed to victory in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster. A superb 2011

for the rider yielded five Group One wins, headed by a second St Leger with Masked Marvel and a thrilling victory on Nathaniel in

the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Dream Ahead, joint-champion European juvenile alongside Frankel in 2010,

recorded a pair of wins at the highest level, in Haydock’s Sprint Cup and the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp. The jockey enjoyed

another hugely successful campaign in 2012, annexing a further nine Group One races including the Coral-Eclipse on Nathaniel,

the Darley Irish Oaks with Great Heavens and the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes on board Australian sprinter Ortensia. Following a

short spell riding in Japan at the start of 2013, he returned to Dubai to partner his first Group One success for Godolphin on

Sajjhaa, who ran on strongly to capture the Jebel Hatta Sponsored By Emirates Airline. He finished second on Libertarian for

trainer Elaine Burke in the 2013 Investec Derby and continued to achieve notable victories at some of Europe’s premier meetings

in 2013, taking the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York and Leopardstown’s Irish Champion Stakes with The Fugue and partnering

Elusive Kate to Group One wins at Newmarket and Deauville. He started to ride more regularly for Godolphin during the Dubai

World Cup Carnival in 2014 and was handed further opportunities by Appleby during the 2014 Flat season in Europe as the trainer

used the best available jockeys for his horses. He continued to excel as retained jockey for Gosden, winning the Prince Of Wales’s

Stakes on The Fugue and posting a second successive win in the Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes with Sultanina. He partnered

Godolphin’s Charming Thought to a thrilling nose victory in the vision.ae Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on Dubai Future

Champions Day at Newmarket in October, 2014, to provide Appleby with a first Group One victory in Britain. He signed a retainer

with Godolphin shortly after the end of the 2014 British Flat season and enjoyed the biggest success of his career on Godolphin’s

Prince Bishop, trained by Saeed bin Suroor, in the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup Sponsored By Emirates Airline at

Meydan, UAE, on March 28, 2015. Accolades: Joint champion apprentice (with David Probert) 2008. Has had 12 Royal Ascot

His first job had been with the late Dessie Hughes at Osborne Lodge in County Kildare, where he worked for four and a half years and gained rides on the Flat (two winners) and over hurdles. It was Hughes’s son, the erstwhile champion jockey Richard, who suggested Dobbs should move to England and team up with Richard Hannon. He had left Ireland just once before, when leading up Final Run in the County Hurdle. Success: Dobbs has remained an integral part of the Hannon set-up since Richard moved aside and his son Richard jnr took the reins. A freelance, Dobbs rides at the yard three or four mornings a week and has gained some big-race wins for the stable, taking the Group Two Sandown Mile in 2004 and 2005 on Hurricane Alan, the Group Two Park Hill Stakes on The Miniver Rose in 2009 and the Group Two Summer Mile on Dick Turpin in 2011. He also won the valuable DBS £300000 St Leger Yearling Stakes on Elnawin in 2008. Notable wins for other stables include Dandy Boy’s success for David Marnane in the 2012 Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot. Dobbs achieved a personal best score of 51 British winners in 2012, although he might have passed that but for breaking his arm on two occasions in the closing weeks of a season. Pat was a member of Ireland’s pony racing circuit, and partnered 35 winners in that sport, then rode his in his first race as a jockey when partnering the Kevin Prendergast-trained Hunan Scholar at Navan, on April 24, 1999. Later that year, on November 2, he broke his duck when the same trainer’s Perugino Lady scored at Dundalk, and in 2003 he became champion apprentice. At the conclusion of the following season, he moved to Britain, initially to ride on the All-Weather for Newmarket trainer Nick Littmoden – he scored his debut British win on Tango Step at Lingfield on December 15, 2004 – and has remained living near the headquarters of British racing ever since. its operations following the death of Ng Teng Fong in February, 2010, but Robert Ng and his family still have horses in training in

the Far East and in Europe. In the UK, Robert has horses with several trainers, including David Elsworth, Sir Michael Stoute, Ed
