York College, CUNY Institutional Fact Book: Fall 2018
Foreword
The Office of Institutional Research is pleased to present the York College Institutional Fact Book. The primary purpose of this document is to serve as an official reference guide and a resource manual for strategic planning and assessment at the college. The goal is to provide trend data on student enrollment, student demographics, graduation trends, graduation rates, retention rates, library statistics, and the growth of the College annual revenues and expenditures. Data can be used by schools, departments, programs, and individuals for assessment and evaluation of academic and academic support services in preparation for the regional and national accreditation, as well as program self-studies, and grant proposal preparation.
The Institutional Fact Book uses primarily the fall semester data and will be updated every year. We hope that you will find this edition useful for your data needs. The web edition of our institutional fact book is located at https://www.york.cuny.edu/president/institutional-effectiveness/institutional-research/fact-book-1. The paper copy is available by request. We also welcome comments and suggestions to improve future editions. Please forward your feedback to The Office of Institutional Research at (718) 262-2333 or by e-mail to [email protected].

York College Mission
York College enriches lives and enables students to grow as passionate, engaged learners with the confidence to realize their intellectual and human potential as individuals and global citizens.
York College Vision York College's hallmark academic programs in liberal arts and sciences will be recognized as centers of excellence within CUNY, attracting and graduating some of the best and most highly motivated students from New York City and the greater New York area. We will be the first choice for prospective CUNY students interested in the health professions, allied health sciences, and business, including aviation management. York College will also establish itself as a model for enabling first generation college students to earn an undergraduate degree and will fulfill students' individual academic goals while preparing them for graduate education and the competitive marketplace. Students are at the center of their own learning at York College. We offer multiple opportunities for student engagement, inquiry and research-based scholarship, and experiential learning. York maintains a vibrant campus where students actively participate in extra-curricular programs and collaborate with faculty and academic peers whose backgrounds are distinctly different from their own. The College has a dynamic student life with athletic and visual/performing arts programs, special interest clubs and social organizations where students develop enduring relationships and refine interpersonal skills.
The College will enable faculty and students to pursue their highest goals and foster their development as individuals and professionals. York College will be an attractive place to work, which will draw highly qualified candidates for its academic, executive, professional and administrative positions. The multicultural nature of our sustainable academic and social environments enriches the collegiate experience for all students, faculty, and staff.
York College will be a magnetizing institution within the Queens community where students and graduates are mobilized as advocates/participants in continuous civic engagement. Our strong alumni network supports our programs, serves as ambassadors and donates time, talent and capital to advance our mission. York College History
The City University of New York System (CUNY) owes its existence to Townsend Harris, a New York merchant, minor politician, and the first United States Consul General to Japan. He founded the Free Academy (later the City College of New York) in 1847 to provide free higher education for New York City's burgeoning working population.
Over a hundred years later, in 1961, Governor Nelson Rockefeller signed the New York State Education Law to deal with a similar increase in students. The law established the Board of Education (now Board of Trustees) of the City University of New York and tasked it to oversee City College and the other constituent units, including Hunter, Brooklyn, Queens College and the Graduate Center.
Today, the City University of New York is the largest city university system in the world. More than 200,000 students are enrolled at campuses throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
On October 24, 1966, CUNY voted to create a fifth senior college, designated as Alpha College, to serve the city's growing student population. Its first president, former Queensborough Community College President, Dr. Dumont F. Kenny, quickly renamed the school York College. Kenny hoped to build a bucolic, suburban liberal arts school near Fort Totten in Queens. These plans, however, quickly fell through.
York opened its doors in the fall of 1967 without plans for a permanent home. Its first classes took place in rooms rented from the Oakland Jewish Center in Bayside, Queens. An entering class of 371 students, largely white and American-born, and a full-time instructional staff of 50 occupied that site for the first academic year.
In May 1968, in response to pressure from local business, community, and religious leaders, the CUNY Board of Higher Education selected Jamaica as the future site of York's permanent campus. While York waited for authorization to build the new campus, it relocated to rudimentary quarters throughout Queens. In 1971, when New York City Community College (originally New York City College of Technology) president Milton G. Bassin M.M.E, P.E. assumed the presidency at York, he found it housed in temporary classrooms on the campus of Queensborough Community College in Bayside. York stayed there for three years before moving to a renovated ex-Montgomery Ward's department store and other buildings in Jamaica.
With the fiscal crisis of the mid-seventies, York's future seemed uncertain. Jamaica residents, eager to have the college in the neighborhood, pressured the city to keep York's doors open. In May 1978, the CUNY Board reaffirmed York's permanence by authorizing construction of the new campus in Jamaica. At the same time, the College underwent expansive curricular development. While York maintained an emphasis on the liberal arts, it began to offer career-related majors in the health professions. The College also opened the Office of Continuing Education to give classes on practical subjects to Jamaica's residents.
With approval from Governor Hugh Carey, construction on York's permanent campus began in December 1980. In 1986, York held its first classes in the new Academic Core. At the time, student enrollment had grown to 4,276. In 1990, York opened the Performing Arts Center and the Health and Physical Education facilities, followed by the athletic fields a year later.
xvii
Marcia V. Keizs became the president of York College in 2005 and under her leadership, the college has strengthened its academic quality through a variety of initiatives. With the construction of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's regional headquarters on York's campus, students may take advantage of collaborative internships, fellowships, and research with world-class scientists. The CUNY Aviation Institute was established in 2003 to prepare students for success in a rapidly changing industry.
In 2009 alone, York launched the Provost Distinguished Scholars Lecture Series, which attracts renowned writers, scholars, and scientists to speak to the York community. York also hired thirty-three new faculty members and reorganized its 18 academic departments into three schools, the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business and Information Systems and School of Health and Behavioral Sciences.
York today would be unrecognizable to an observer from 1967. The College has grown to more than 7,780 students from 120 countries speaking more than 83 languages. Despite a variety of new programs, including Nursing, Pharmaceutical Science and Journalism, many of York's biggest changes are to come.
The College plans to build major additions to its campus, including a state-of-the-art Academic Village and a CUNY School of Pharmacy, to further improve the opportunities for students.

Cohort- a specific group of students established for tracking purposes.
College Admission Average (CAA) – high school grade point average upon entering an institution to determine eligibility for admission.
College Now – a free college transition and dual enrollment program. The program provides college credit courses aligned with first year study at CUNY, pre-college courses which increase students’ academic readiness for college without a need for remediation, college awareness courses and activities, full day summer programs and access to CUNY campus facilities and events.

Fiscal Year (FY) - is a twelve-month period that an organization uses to report its finances. Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) - is a single value providing a meaningful combination of full-time and part-time students.
Resident Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) - helps eligible legal New York residents pay tuition at approved schools in New York State.
Retention Rates - a measure of the rate at which students persist in their educational program at an institution, expressed as a percentage. For four-year institutions, this is the percentage of first-time bachelors (or equivalent) degree seeking undergraduates from the previous fall who are again enrolled in the current fall.
Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) - it is the higher education opportunity program at the senior CUNY colleges. It was established to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college due to their educational and financial circumstances.
