WRC PROGRADE PHOTO OF THE YEAR
The 2018 WRC season will be remembered as the most exciting and dramatic in a generation.
It is 15 years since a drivers’ title fight of similar magnitude and a compelling season-long battle involving three drivers was finally resolved on the last morning of the season in Australia. It was a similar story in the manufacturers’ championship. All four teams won rallies and three made the long journey Down Under still with an opportunity to claim the crown.
Following a similarly enthralling and unpredictable 2017 cam-paign, when new-era World Rally Cars headlined a raft of major changes to the championship, it is clear our sport is in the midst of an unforgettable period in its history.
Away from the close competition, the WRC has grown in stature. The year opened with a major launch at Birmingham’s Autosport International show and finished with a glamorous end of season gala in Sydney and with the cars showcased once more in front of Milan’s iconic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo.
Our pioneering WRC+ All Live channel revolutionised the way in which fans could enjoy the sport as it happened. Every special stage from each round was streamed live, featuring stunning onboard and helicopter footage. It was supplemented by expert analysis and reactions from across the service park – adding up to more than 325 hours of live coverage.
Our traditional TV coverage thrived too. The WRC’s global audi-ence and the number of broadcast hours continue their positive trend of the last years. Plenty of successes to celebrate - but we don’t stop here.
After the big success of 2018’s new Rally Turkey in Marmaris, we continue working on the WRC’s global footprint, returning old favourites or bringing new adventures to the series.
We welcome Chile onto the 2019 calendar for the first time and are working hard to return Kenya and Japan. It’s an exciting future we can all look forward to.

Over the past six years, the WRC enjoyed a sound growth trend in popularity from fans. With new TV technology and fantastic helicopter and drone footage, the WRC is growing its broadcast hours and TV audience year on year. KEY FACTS2018Total TV audience for the 2018 season again exceeded 800 million viewers according to research from independent analyst Nielsen Sports.
The intense title fight in both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ series boosted figures up to the last day of the season. Signifi-cant year-on-year increases at the final two rounds in Spain and Australia carried the annual figure to more than 825 million. An audience of 100 million viewed the glamorous opening of the new season at Rallye Monte-Carlo. It is the fourth consecutive year in which the TV audience from the Principality of Monaco topped 100 million.
Audiences from rallies in Spain and Australia moved closer to the Monte-Carlo figure, the epic title fights boosting their viewer numbers in the region of 90 million viewers each for the first time.
While Europe headed the leading TV markets, there was fast growing development in Asia with Japan featuring in the top 10 countries.
Turkey, which hosted a WRC round for the first time since 2010, went straight to the top 10 countries for audience.

Co-Driver Miikka Anttila celebrating Toyota´s win in Sweden
SÉBASTIEN OGIER – THE TOUGHEST TRIUMPH YETSix of the best for Sébastien, placing him three world titles behind his namesake and fellow Frenchman Loeb. But 2018 was different. It was the first one finalised in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of a final round decider.
Three wins in the opening four rallies lifted the M-Sport Ford man and co-driver Julien Ingrassia 17 points clear of Thierry Neuville. But a purple patch for the Belgian, combined with a Portuguese tree root which damaged Ogier’s steering and sent his Fiesta into a ditch, transformed the year.
Ogier in Wales
Tänak in Turkey
OTT TÄNAK – THE FASTEST DRIVER IN THE 2018 WRCIt’s an opinion few would argue with and is backed up by statistics. He won more special stages than anyone and led for more stages than any other driver.
After a season in the shadow of Sébastien Ogier at M-Sport Ford, Tänak’s switch to Toyota Ga-zoo Racing enabled the Estonian to emerge not only as the Japanese manufacturer’s number one driver, but also as a title contender.
His campaign was one of highs and lows. Poor returns from Sweden, Mexico, Portugal and Italy were offset by victory in Argentina and a terrific hat-trick of wins in Finland, Germany and Turkey to gatecrash the title scrap bet-ween Ogier and Thierry Neuville. A little more luck and a touch more guile could have seen him achieve what few would have thought possible at the start of the year.
He won or led each of the last six rounds and many will place him at the top of their favou-rites list for 2019.
THIERRY NEUVILLE - ONE TO FORGETThe man to beat for the bulk of the season, Thierry Neuville headed Down Under with only a three-point deficit to Ogier but was confident he could win his first world title.
However, the Hyundai man’s challenge unra-velled almost straight away. Damaging a wheel in the Sherwood test meant Neuville tumbled down the order at the end of day one, and struggled with a less favourable road position on day two.
He decided to go for broke on Sunday in a last-ditch attempt to secure the points he needed. But the gamble didn’t pay off. Clouting a bank and losing a rear wheel brought his rally and title charge to a sudden end. “Voila!” was the dejected Belgian‘s summary as he retired his car at the side of the road.
Ogier trailed the Hyundai i20 pilot by 23 points heading to Britain with three rounds remaining. He slumped to third in the stan-dings, in the unusual position of being the hunter rather than the hunted. His fighting instincts were unearthed. A scrapping fifth British win preceded second in Spain after another tense final day finale and it all came down to Australia – with Seb back on top but chased by Neuville and Ott Tänak.

A TV REVOLUTION2018 was when WRC truly went live. Not just some of it. All of it. WRC+, the championship´s own OTT channel on plus.wrc.com, WRC+ All Live proved ground-breaking and transformed the way the championship was broadcast.
For the first time, every special stage from each round was stre-amed live and available to fans via whatever means they chose. It added up to more than 25 hours’ live coverage from each rally.Viewers rode with the stars via stunning onboard footage and enjoyed amazing eye-in-the-sky helicopter coverage.
When the stage ended, expert studio analysis and reaction from the service park enhanced what they had watched.
There were great moments on the stages and equally captivating drama off them. Some of the best moments came as viewers sha-red the frustrations of first Thierry Neuville and then Sébastien Ogier as they battled to repair their stricken cars and save their title ambitions roadside in Turkey.
All Live was a genuine game-changer for fans.

SARDINIA SHOOTOUT
That time between a driver’s brain processing the need to a react and the driver doing so is all that separated Thierry Neuville and Sébastien Ogier after an electrifying duel in Italy in June.
Neuville trailed his title rival by 0.8sec ahead of Rally Italia Sar-degna’s closing 6.96km Power Stage from Sassari to Argentiera. It was a tricky finale. After a bumpy but fast opening, the route descended steeply via a series of tricky hairpin bends to a final sandy 1.2km alongside the azure blue sea.
Despite a mistake when his Hyundai i20 was thrown onto two wheels, Neuville delivered a daredevil drive to perform a snatch and grab on Ogier and claim his third win of the season – matching the third closest WRC finish in history after almost 315km of flat-out action.
Only Ogier in Jordan in 2011 and Marcus Grönholm in New Zea-land four years earlier have triumphed by a smaller margin.
It was the type of nail-biting Power Stage that has become the hallmark of the WRC’s Sunday lunchtime finale as drivers take big risks in search of vital bonus points.

All the big-name drivers, co-drivers and team principals were present to share their views on the new season, two weeks be-fore the prestigious Rallye Monte-Carlo in the opening action in Monaco’s glamorous Casino Square.
A packed day of WRC activities heralded the opening of Europe’s biggest pre-season motorsport show at the NEC Birmingham. All cars will stay on display throughout the weekend with more driver appearances lined up.
Competitors from WRC 2 and Junior WRC also took part.

CHILECELEBRATIONSExpect the celebratory fireworks to light up the night sky in host city Concepción when Chile becomes the 32nd country to stage an FIA World Rally Championship round in 2019.
Few regions embrace the WRC with the passion, atmosphere and intensity that Latin America brings to the championship, and COPEC Rally Chile forms the second part of a spectacular doub-le-header with Rally Argentina.
Sandwiched into a narrow strip of land between the imposing Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, Chile has a proud motorsport history and its introduction into the WRC adds to south America’s burgeoning portfolio of world-class motorsport.
Chile forms the sixth fixture of 2019’s expanded 14-event season. High-quality gravel roads await the WRC’s stars for the 9 - 12 May encounter, just 11 days after the growling engines of the new ge-neration, winged wonder World Rally Cars are silenced in neigh-bouring Argentina.
TURKISHDELIGHTTurkey’s return to the WRC for the first time in eight years created a microcosm of the gripping FIA World Rally Championship title fight that raged throughout 2018.
When Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed the finishers into the service park in the wooded hills above the bustling holiday resort of Marmaris, few could put into coherent words the excitement of the weekend that had just ended.
Searing heat that challenged humans and their machines, rocky gravel roads set amid picture postcard backdrops and an enthral-ling Saturday that generated the most dramatic day of WRC com-petition in years fully rewarded the decision to return Turkey to the calendar.
But Turkey was about much more than just the competition. Hund-reds of people attended a glamorous pre-event welcome evening, which included an international fashion show in which top-name models worked a red carpet catwalk stretching out into the sea.
And winner Ott Tänak took away more than just a third consecutive victory. The Estonian Toyota Gazoo Racing driver scooped a week’s holiday on the Turkish Riviera aboard the 47-metre super yacht Bebe, courtesy of the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation.

»RALLY DRIVER JON ARMSTRONG SWITCHED HIS IN-CAR SKILLS TO A VIRTUAL GAMING RIG TO WIN THE COVETED ESPORTS WRC WORLD TITLE IN GERMANY.«
The 23-year-old Ulsterman, who drove in the WRC in 2017, reco-vered from a crash to secure the crown in a thrilling final during the WRC’s ADAC Rallye Deutschland round.
Armstrong’s success came just 12 months after being inspired to try WRC 7, the official game of the FIA World Rally Championship, after watching live coverage of the 2017 eSports final.
He earned a place among the top nine players following 13 regular season rounds and qualified fastest in the semi-finals. He lined up against three other gamers in a tense shootout on three deman-ding special stages.
He opened a 7sec lead over Finnish outsider Mihalur over Poland’s 23km mixed surface Kruklanki test, but rolled near the finish of Corsica’s asphalt Pietrosella stage and received a 7sec penalty.
Armstrong trailed Mihalur by 1.4sec starting the final test on Mexi-co’s gravel El Chocolate roads. He threw caution to the wind to set fastest time and lift the title by 3.1sec.
The third edition of the championship powered by Hyundai pro-ved a huge success, attracting a record entry of more than 10,000 players. The final was streamed on the WRC’s popular All Live plat-form, and more than 125,000 fans followed the excitement on the WRC’s social media channels.

TITANICTITLE TUSSLEThe fight for the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship drivers’ title contained more twists and turns than a corkscrew and the season will be remembered as one of the sport’s classics.
Twelve months previously, new-era World Rally Cars brought more power, more speed and more spectacle to the WRC and Sébastien Ogier secured his fifth consecutive crown after a year labelled the most exciting and unpredictable in a decade.
Few thought 2018 could match that. It didn’t. It went well beyond 2017 as Ogier, Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak delivered a bre-athtaking three-way tussle that went all the way to the final mor-ning in Australia before Ogier finally laid his hands on the trophy for a sixth time.
Ogier was fastest out of the blocks with three wins from the opening four rounds. Neuville reeled him in to lead at the mid-season break, before Tänak gatecrashed the head-to-head duel with a hat-trick of wins to stake his own claim.
Arguably the fastest driver over the entire season, late-season issues derailed Tänak’s charge, while Neuville also struggled for points in the second half.
Ogier’s consistency, allied with a stunning win in Britain, proved the turning point, but his title was only confirmed after both rivals crashed out on a rain-soaked final leg Down Under.
Simply sublime.
