The Fluker Post Project

By taking a photo at the Fluker Posts in

Gunbower Forest, you are joining a

community-based environmental

monitoring project that has been

operating since 2008 and now has 80

Fluker Posts in the field.

This research project, run through

Victoria University, aims to bring

together the people who are actually

out enjoying the natural environment,

land management agencies and

academics in a way that monitors the

visual condition of often-fragile natural

environments.

The changing conditions evidenced

may include the early warning of

adverse impacts such the introduction

of new weeds or the spread of disease

such as phtophthora, interventions

such as revegetation work or flooding,

or general erosion caused by weather

or human interaction.

According to Dr Fluker “the beauty of

this system is its simplicity – people out

walking see the post, read the

instructions on the sign, take a photo

with their own camera, and email it in.

We then arrange the photo in

chronological order in a publicly

accessible webite.”
