Costa Rica is an oasis of natural wonders — volcanoes, rainforests, white sand beaches, coral reefs and wildlife — all within a world-renowned system of national parks that protects more species of mammals and birds than the continental U.S.A. and Canada combined.

Our trip features Costa Rica’s natural wonders, experienced through hikes and river safaris. See the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest, where you might spot a Resplendent Quetzal as you hike along jungle trails.

At Arenal Volcano, watch lava flows as they snake down the mountainside and visit Eco-Termales Hot Springs for a satisfying soak in the thermal pools. Cross the rainforest on the incredible Arenal Hanging Bridges. The highlight for many is the boat journey through the extensive, wildlife-rich canal system of Tortuguero National Park.

Travel north to the Guanacaste province to experience a true working ranch. Get to know the local Sabaneros (cowboys) of Costa Rica.

For active nature lovers seeking pristine rainforest, exotic wildlife, active volcanoes and superb birding, Costa Rica is the perfect adventure destination.

Activity Level: 1 Comfort Level: Seas are rarely rough. Zodiac landings required.

AccommodationsAboard the National Geographic Sea Bird, all cabins with private bathrooms. National geographic sea bird There are 31 outside cabins with windows or portholes (lower deck only) aboard. Each cabin has a private bathroom, climate controls and ample space for storage. Special Features: Zodiac landing craft, kayaks, snorkeling gear, wet suits, guest email station, video microscope, hydrophone and Splash-Cam. Meals are served in the dining room with fine views through panoramic windows. Maximum: 62 passengers, Registry: United States, Length: 152 feet.

Each winter, gray whales migrate south from their Arctic feeding grounds to breed and rear their young in Baja California’s sheltered lagoons, making it one of North America’s premier whale watching sites.

During our days in the breeding lagoons of Bahia Magdalena, we venture among them in Zodiac landing craft. This gives us a water-level perspective for whale watching that is a rare privilege in the natural world. And it positions us perfectly for the increasingly common, friendly encounters with these mammals that we’ve shared with our guests.

Our expedition also offers naturalist-guided walks on uninhabited desert islands, swimming, snorkeling and kayaking in the Sea of Cortez. The itinerary remains flexible to make the most of whale watching and wildlife sightings.

Whales, dolphins, sea lions, birds such as blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds, huge Cardon cacti, mangroves and sand dunes are among the wonders you’ll experience.

Exchange a curious glance with a blue-footed boobie, admire stunning tri-colored marine iguanas and watch the ever-playful sea lions frolic in the surf. The non-preditorial environment of Darwin’s Galapagos has created a non-threatening, relaxed and magical connection with wildlife unlike any other on earth.

Our 13-day Galapagos adventure starts and finishes in the colonial capital of Quito, nestled in the Andes. Enjoy a visit to the Otavalo Market and a train journey through spectacular mountain scenery. The short flight to Baltra delivers us to our comfortable yacht. Watch for dolphins riding the bow, like oceanic messengers taking us to our next equatorial volcanic island, each with its unique endemic species perfectly adapted to its environment. Pink flamingos, Galapagos penguins, giant tortoises and a myriad of birdlife, including the fish-stealing frigate and the enormous albatross, are just some of the wildlife we encounter during our naturalist guided adventure.

Cool off with a refreshing ocean dip, or snorkel with stingrays and view the fantastic underwater world of sea turtles, dolphins, fluorescent tropical fish and colorful coral gardens, before departing for your next evolutionary marvel.

iMPORTANT NOTE: Few Galapagos journeys include the seldom-visited western islands. ElderTreks Galapagos adventure does include this hard-to-get-to region, making our trip unique and remote, and providing a Darwinian experience second-to-none.

Activity Level: 5 Comfort Level: 14 days over 9,000 feet. Some rough/winding roads and long drives.

AccommodationsComfortable hotels/lodges with private bathrooms. One night homestay with shared basic bathrooms on Taquile Island. Trek lodges maximum 6 rooms, single supplements not guaranteed all nights. Peru offers some of the most impressive archeological sites in the world and equally stunning opportunities to hike past breathtaking mountain peaks, glacial lakes and lush river valleys. Visit the ancient lands of the Caral, Chavin, Chimu, Moche and Inca. Trek in the highest mountain range outside of the Himalayas, the Cordillera Blanca with 22 summits of over 19,000 feet. No Peru hiking adventure is complete without hiking a true Inca trail. Our ultimate 6-day lodge-to-lodge Salkantay Inca Trail will give you that journey, culminating in a visit to the UNESCO World

heritage site of Machu Picchu.

We begin by exploring the captial city of Lima before departing along the coastal desert to Barranca and the 4500 year old ruins of Caral. Spectacular mountain scenery begins as we head inland to the Cordillera Negra and Cordillera Blanca with the city of Huaraz nestled between. The exceptional scenery is matched by the feat of engineering of the Chavin Culture in creating the tunnels and temples from 1200 BC. See Chiclayo and Trujillo and the ancient Mochica’s Lord of Sipan, the pyramids at Tucume and the adobe temples of Chan Chan. Visit the heart of the Inca empire, Cusco and climb the Sacred Valley’s fortresses of Pisaq and Ollantaytambo. From Puno we travel by boat to the unique reed “ floating islands” of the Uros people and stay in a family guesthouse on Taquile Island where we can hike over terraces and past small villages with tranquil views over Lake Titicaca.

Our 6-day lodge-to-lodge trek combines superb scenery, comfortable lodges and great food while avoiding the crowds of the “other” more common Inca trail. Meet the local Quechua as we traverse from high Andes to lush river valleys through nine different biozones. Discover remote ruins along the trails connecting these ancient routes and end your trekking day in the best of ElderTreks’ adventure style - with a glass of wine in a warm jacuzzi! Our Peru trekking program is an adventure on many levels, one of the most strenuous and certainly one of the most rewarding.

Activity Level: 5 Comfort Level: 4 travel days and 1 night over 9,000 ft. Some rough/dusty, winding roads and long drives.

Visit four South American countries — Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia: regions with fascinating indigenous cultures, active volcanoes and geysers, sublime landscapes and snow-capped peaks. Walk through numerous pre-Columbian villages and ruins, visit superb wine regions or search for guanaco and vicuna herds roaming the high altiplano.

Drive over spectacular Andean passes and trek through remote gorges and valleys — home to estancias (ranches) which bring to life the romanticized images of the hard-working Gauchos — reminiscent of the Wild West of the mid-1800s.

What makes this journey even more impressive is the fact that these hidden treasures remain virtually undiscovered by tourists. This itinerary is perfect for anyone looking for an active trekking adventure to little-known regions of South America.

Cruise along the gentle tributaries of the Amazon; witness Iguazu Falls’ crushing strength as torrents fall through the Devil’s Throat; travel to the Pantanal, one of the richest biological zones on earth and finish the journey in Rio, one of the world’s most beautiful cities.

We cruise along the Amazon up to the Anavilhanas Archipelago aboard a comfortable riverboat. The Amazon Basin is a river-sea and vast forest covering over half of Brazil. The region is one of the earth’s greatest natural masterpieces and features 50,000 miles of navigable waterways, the earth’s largest forest and over 15,000 animal species.

In the Pantanal, the world’s largest inland marsh, explore wetlands in search of wildlife by day, and rest comfortably in an ecolodge by night. Our journey continues south to Iguazu Falls for a panoramic view from the Brazilian side and an up-close, misty look from the Argentine side. Iguazu certainly lives up to its name, which means “big water” in the local Indian dialect.

The lost world of Venezuela is a destination with snow-capped peaks of the Andes, abundant wildlife in the Llanos, lush jungle, indigenous tribes, interesting colonial history and friendly South American hospitality. Venezuela’s greatest natural attraction is the world’s highest waterfall, magnificent Angel Falls. Not only is Venezuela one of South America’s undiscovered travel gems, but a must see destination for adventure travelers.

From the capital of Caracas, we fly to Mérida, which offers typical Andean culture and scenery, and is situated high in the mountains. We then descend to the wildlife rich sanctuary in the plains of the Llanos, leaving behind the snow-covered peaks of the Andes.

Our next destination is the world’s highest waterfall, Angel Falls, situated in the vast, pristine jungles of Canaima National Park, which feature a unique geological feature known as “Tepuis“ or tabletop mountains. We see many of the parks’ spectacular waterfalls and rivers which beautifully carve and shape the stunning landscape of Canaima. We will enjoy these beautiful surroundings during our scenic flight and 3 hour boat journey through Canaima’s jungle enroute to Angel Falls. We overnight on the river close to the falls which offers the oppourtunity to

see the breathtaking view of sunset and sunrise on Angel Falls.

Unlike many tour operators, ElderTreks provides various opportunities to see Angel falls by scenic flight, on foot and by locally-made canoes. At almost 1 kilometer high, 3280 feet, the sheer size and height of the falls cannot be expressed through mere words or photos and must truly be seen up close to be fully appreciated.

We will encounter indigineous tribes, including the Pemón Indians of Canaima and also the Warao or “Canoe People” of the Orinoco Delta. The Delta is an intricate labyrinth of waterways weaving through the jungle and supports extremely rich and varied wildlife including jaguar, puma, ocelot, red howler and capuchin monkeys, capybara, giant otters, manatee, dolphins and anacondas as well as extensive birdlife.

From the world’s highest waterfall, to the peaks of the Andes Mountains, the lush rainforest, indigenous tribes and abundant wildlife make this journey nothing short of an absolutely epic adventure.

Yukon, one of Canada’s northernmost territories within the Arctic Circle. Homeland of American Indians and Inuit, Yukon is one of North America’s largest remaining wild regions. It is also where the unexpected occurs. Kluane N.P. is

one of unceasing beauty with its pine tree forests, wide glacial valleys, tundra setting and its glacier-peaked mountain range, home to a population of wolves, grizzly bears, salmon and eagles. Alaska as the ultimate wilderness destination is bequeathed with majestic mountain tops, dazzling coastal scenery, the highest summits and largest glaciers in North America (5000 of them) and endless horizons of blue sky and sheer space. This is a magical land with a special allure that captures the imagination of anyone who is fortunate enough to venture beyond its borders. Nothing can prepare you for the grandeur of such scenes nor the scale, everything in Alaska is huge! With a total area of 591,000 square miles (1,5 million square km’s) and 45,000 miles (72,000 km’s) of coastline. Superior walking terrain beckons from the wilds of Denali N.P. to Matanuska Glacier. Here creaking glaciers spill from an ocean of snow-capped peaks. For a contrast, discover the maritime beauty of its stunning coastline at the Kenai Fjords N.P. Wildlife varieties far outweigh the tiny human population - 550,000 Alaskans share their land with more then 600,000 caribou and 40,000 grizzlies. Wolves and black bears roam the land, sea-lions and whales trawl the coasts and bald eagles soar in the vast skies above. Experience northern walking as you have never experienced it before - The Great Outdoors indeed.

ElderTreks strongly recommends you arrive in Petersburg at least one day before your cruise departure. We will be happy to assist you with hotel reservations.

Activity Level: 2 Comfort Level: Sea can be rough. Zodiac landings required.

AccommodationsAboard a motor yacht, the M/V Catalyst. Cabins 1 & 6 – twin share, private bathrooms with shower. Cabins 2 & 3 – twin share, shared bathrooms and shower. Cabin 4 – small single, shared bathrooms and shower. Cabin 5 – quad share, shared bathrooms and shower.

This cruise offers a diverse view of southeast Alaska, from fishing towns to wilderness solitude, from islands to glacial fjords. Our goal is to provide the most remote wilderness experience possible while enjoying the amenities of our wandering home. Aboard the M/V Catalyst, the dynamic between passengers and crew is more intimate than cruise ships, adding considerably to the quality of the adventure.

While we have a planned itinerary, each trip differs slightly depending upon the time of the tidal currents, the weather conditions, wildlife viewing opportunities and the wishes

of our clients.

This glacial wilderness supports a diversity of wildlife (particularly good in August) as varied as the landscape. On water, there is the probability of sighting humpback whales, orca, porpoise and stellar sea lions as well as numerous sea birds. On land, we may see black bears, brown bears and mountain goats, just to name a few.

There are some great halibut holes along the way, and during the right time of year there is the possibility for salmon. We average three to four hours of travel per day, allowing plenty of opportunity for exploring by foot and by kayak.

M/V CatalystThe 74-foot Catalyst was the first oceanographic research vessel of the University of Washington. In 1932, the M/V Catalyst cruised through the Inside Passage and across the Gulf of Alaska. During WWII, the Catalyst patrolled the Aleutian Islands for Japanese submarines. It has cruised the waters of Alaska, Baja California and Hawaii.

The yacht was constructed of white oak, Alaskan yellow cedar, Douglas fir, teak and Australian ironwood. Classic accommodations include cozy, private staterooms, a tidy galley and a warm wood-paneled salon. With the heartbeat of her slow-turning, rugged diesel engine chugging in the background, the pace aboard a Catalyst cruise is relaxed and unhurried.

AccommodationsAboard the Island Roamer. Cabins are small but comfortable, with shared bathrooms. The first night is spent in Sandspit.

This natural history sailing trip explores Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve in the southern Queen Charlotte Islands. These islands form a unique archipelago situated (50 miles/80 kilometers) west of Prince Rupert on British Columbia’s Northwest coast. Often referred to as Canada’s own “Galapagos”, the Queen Charlotte Islands have a unique vegetation, wildlife and cultural history that has evolved in relative isolation over the last several thousand years. Evidence suggests that parts of the islands remained unglaciated during the last 10,000 years, offering refuge for animals and plants. The area is geologically active and has seen massive fluctuations in sea levels. The islands are the epicenter of Haida culture, and Gwaii Haanas was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During this spectacular adventure, you will have the opportunity to visit sacred sites, feel the solitude of the wilderness and experience the wildlife and of course Haida culture. The Island Roamer The Island Roamer is a custom 68-foot ketch, launched in 1983. The boat’s design, safety and comfort make it particularly well-suited for providing wildlife and wilderness trips for up to 16 guests. It features 8 private cabins (double occupancy), 3 heads with hot showers, a large comfortable lounge with an extensive library and a well-equipped galley. On deck, the large covered seating area provides protection in all types of weather. The boat is large enough for comfort and privacy and small enough to create a good rapport among the passengers and crew. The Island Roamer is a certified Canadian Ministry of Transport passenger vessel with all of the safety equipment and electronic navigation aids.

Accommodations2 comfortable lodges in the mountains, all rooms with private bathrooms.

Imagine hiking in a pristine area surrounded by stunning and surreal landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. Your accommodation is in comfortable lodges. Your guides are fully certified, professional mountain guides with years of training and experience. YOU choose how rigorous or how relaxing your day will be. And the final touch - you are delivered and picked up from this magical wilderness by helicopter. The scenery, the service, the experience does not get any better. Welcome to heli-hiking! We are offering a superb 7-day heli-hiking journey in the Columbia Mountain Range. Located on the western side of the great swath of the Rocky Mountain Trench, the Columbia’s are technically not part of the Rockies, but run parallel to it and are a stunning and little-known collection of peaks and ranges.

A typical day of heli-hiking: after a great sleep and hearty breakfast, our helicopter delivers us to one of several possible starting points. We set out hiking and exploring, always at a comfortable pace, with long or short, strenuous or leisurely hikes to choose from. Our guests, not our guides, set the pace. Our guides are in constant communication with the lodge’s helicopter, so we may take two or three different hikes during the day. Our golden rule is flexibility and adaptability.

Each day we immerse ourselves into different terrains, which could include being dropped in a meadow beneath a stupendous glacial cirque for a morning hike followed by a picnic lunch. With the help of our helicopter, we begin our traverse around a cobalt lake, all the time soaking in the mountain beauty and solitude. In the late afternoon, we fly back to the lodge for a massage, an outdoor hot tub soak or a sauna, a well earned, beautifully prepared dinner and some story swapping while sipping wine by the fireplace in our comfortable lodge. We hope you can join us and enjoy the magic that is heli-hiking.
