Directions For Using this Lesson

• The first few slides of the PowerPoint review Fact and Opinion. Review these together as a class.

• The first time you use the lesson, take your class to the lab.

• Have your students bring their SSR novel for the week. They will use this text to complete the 6 slides asking them to choose and type a statement from the book, label it as a fact or opinion, and then state how they know.

• Once the lesson has been done whole group, it can be used as a literacy station. You may want to put specific books in the station for the students to use to ensure that the “…in various texts” component of this student expectation is well covered.

• **To print, go to file/print. Under PRINT WHAT: , have the students select HANDOUTS. Then have them click OK.All explanations and tips have come from the TAKS Study Guide which is located at:

OPINION

Certain words can help you recognize an opinion. Some of these are I think and I believe. Other clues to opinions are words such as best, prettiest, worst, and wonderful. It is important to remember that people can have different opinions.
