    WORLDCONNECTORS 20102

Looking back, 2010 was a year o ups and downs. Teworld united around the soccer World Cup with South-A rica as its global centre. Te slow recovery rom thenancial crisis showed the banks behaving as i nothinghad happened, with their high bonus driven culture.Whilst the economic all out is continuing to affectmillions: particularly people in in ormal jobs such aswomen and migrants. Te billions o dollars used to savethe banks and corporates are now the reason or cut backsin public spending in most countries around the world:education and health services are reduced most. Teinternational community discussed strategies to tackleclimate change issues and to urther the efforts toreaching the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.Te challenge is how to get agreements and promises

rom paper to reality. Te earthquackes in Haiti and theoods in Pakistan were the worst o many disasters. Tecombination o unpredictable climate conditions, bio ueland speculation has le ood prices soaring. Now morethan a billion people, mostly women and their children, sick and elderly, are trying to survive in a state o chronichunger. In the Gul o Mexico 4,9 million barrels o oilwere spilled. In Belarus un air elections led to protests

which were violently repressed. In the Netherlands, elections lead to the rst minority government andgrave concern about the increasing polarisation andxenophobia in our society.

Tese events conrm the need to address global issuesand combat eelings o mistrust on both global and locallevels. It is the Worldconnectors view that we are seeingthe end o a societal model. Te industrial and competitivemodel o the 20th century is not solving the challenges othe 21st century: how to preserve our global commonssuch as the environment, how to create more democraticand economic opportunity or all. Many people areworried about the uture and a raid to loose what theyhave gained. We need introspection and trans ormation,on both personal and societal levels. Only then can wereach an in-depth understanding o current developmentsand search or new solutions. Te Worldconnectors aimis to act as a constructive orce by connecting differentgenerations and stakeholders, by stimulating dialogue, innovative thinking and voice: across and beyondborders. Te uture o the Netherlands is intrinsiclyconnected to the global ups and downs o climate change

and economic as well as democratic developmentelsewhere in the world.

Global issues such as poverty, climate change andinequality, need urgent action: not only in the South.Local issues like healthcare, education, sa ety andemployment need our attention. Tere is an enormouspotential within communities to contribute to positiveglobal change: a new sustainable and social economicmodel can be developed. For example, in various placesin the world citizens are setting up ransition owns as alocal sel -led answer to climate change and scarcities, whilst other individuals start online viral campaigns toraise awareness or human rights. As Worldconnectors, our aim is to hear ideas rom many sides, show thebroader picture and help nd new solutions. Tese aretimes in which the efforts o individuals, governments, business and media together are needed to build bridges, both locally and globally. Our challenge is to develop theability to hear the voices, also o the excluded, and tocreate the energy to connect, cross bridges, trans orm andnd our common human voice and uture: to build aworld that is just, peace ul and sustainable or all.

    Sylvia Borren and Herman Wijffels

    Welcome

English or Dutch?A large part of the Worldconnectorscommunication is in English, as is thisYearbook. As the name Worldconnectorsimplies, our goal is to connect differentworlds and to connect the Netherlandswith the rest of the world. Communicatingin English makes the ideas and activitiesof the Worldconnectors accessible toeveryone. It also gives non-Dutch speakersthe opportunity to participate and ensuresthat information can be shared withinternational colleagues and guestspeakers. Media communication directedat a Dutch audience is, however, alwaysformulated in Dutch.

The EarthCharterThe Earth Charter is an important sourceof inspiration for the Worldconnectors. Itis a declaration of fundamental principlesfor building a just, sustainable and peace-ful global society for the 21st century. TheEarth Charter was created by global civilsociety and has been endorsed by thou-sands of organisations and institutions. The Charter is not only a call to action, but a motivating source inspiring changein the world. See what you can do onwww.earthcharter.nl orwww.earthcharterinaction.org.

How it startedTe initiative or the Worldconnectors was taken in 2006by Ruud Lubbers, SID NL, NCDO and DPRN. Teybelieved that the Netherlands needed to play a morepositive and active role in international cooperation andglobal sustainable development. o this end they broughttogether a group o women and men in inuentialpositions, who were rom different age groups and sectorso society. Tey created a dynamic network: the World-connectors Round able or People and the Planet.

Who we areTe Worldconnectors are opinion leaders in the public,

business, policy, civil society and political arena. Inspiredby the UN Millennium Declaration and the EarthCharter, we all share the ambition to build a sustainableand peace ul global society. We critically analyse currenttrends and introduce new and innovative views to tackleglobal challenges. We emphasise global interdependence:the connections between all members o local, nationaland global society.

Our missionTe mission o the Worldconnectors Round able is toencourage and enhance the role o the Netherlands - inall dimensions o society - as a key player in the globalcommunity o nations and peoples, with the urgent aimo working towards a just, sustainable, inclusive andpeace ul world. Te Round able will be both a catalystand an actor or an open, tolerant, optimistic andpro-active Netherlands that, in all its diversity, is a globalactor in the world.

What we doTe Worldconnectors meet our times a year at a Round

able Meeting to engage in cross-sector dialogue onrelevant themes. We speak out within our own networksand in public on matters related to international solidarity, global sustainable development and universal responsibility. We put effort into inspiring a global perspective in thepolitical agenda and the policy debate in the Netherlands. We also aim to rein orce a global mindset amongst theDutch public.

How we do itIn preparation or each Round able Meeting, a group

o Worldconnectors and a number o external expertswith a special interest in a particular theme collaboratein a Working Group. We generally dra a centralStatement or discussion document, which explains our vision on a specic theme, what the added value o theWorldconnectors could be and how this vision couldappeal to a wider public. Te Statement incorporates theperspectives o different stakeholders, including those indeveloping countries. Some Working Groups choose other means o stimulatingthe debate, such as organising public outreach activitiesor initiating direct dialogue with politicians, journalistsand other opinion leaders. Others might do both. Mosto us participate in public events or media activities toraise attention or the themes. Furthermore, our websiteis used as a plat orm or dialogue with people interestedin Worldconnectors and their issues. In order to alsoexchange ideas with people rom developing countries adiscussion orum has been set up in collaboration withVoiceOver 2015, a network o people rom all over theworld who aim to contribute to the Dutch debate ondevelopment cooperation. Statements are published andare a subject o discussion on the online orum. We alsopresent our activities and comment on news in weblogs.Tis yearbook 2010 gives an overview o the World-connectors activities in 2010.

    Media coverage in 2010

In ieder geval uitte WTO-chef Pascal

A callto bring the world together , zeg maar.

TheEmphatic Civilization. The race to global consciousness in a world incrisis onderbouwt namelijk precies jouw stelling.

Hartelijke groeten,Annick

    IMPROVINGTHE DUTCHBANKINGSECTOR

    THEME Financial Systems

The Worldconnectors have set up a special Working Group FinancialSystems in order to formulate recommendations for more comprehensiveand future-oriented commercial and risk management policies for the Dutchbanking sector. In carrying out this task the Working Group has limiteditself to those issues which have to date received little attention in the pub-lic d bat o r formi g th a cial s ctor: corporat social r spo sibilityand sustainability. The Worldconnectors acknowledge that Dutch bankshav ta importa t i itiativ s i this ar a, but th crisis of co d cin the banking sector, as well as the urgency of addressing public goodsand the role of business therein, require more priority and urgency.

Te nancial crisis, which began in the United States andthen spread to Europe, has now become global. Te crisisitsel stems, mainly, rom poorly regulated nancialmarkets in rich countries, which allowed risky andcomplex nancial products to develop, skewing nancialows and creating unsustainable global imbalances. Withworld trade plummeting and industrial production

alling drastically, the economic crisis has affecteddeveloping countries through declining trade, privatenancial ows and remittances. As the banking sector hasplayed an important role in the aggravation o thenancial crisis, the Worldconnectors eel that banks needto change their policies in an ethical and sustainable way.Te ull recommendations o the Working Group can beread in the statement Financial Systems that is an annexto this Worldconnectors Yearbook.

RUUD LUBBERS working group memberIt is great that the nancial crisis in the Netherlands isbeing investigated so thoroughly. However, the twocommissions that are carrying out the investigation arepaying too much attention to the national situation, which is not the measure or avoiding the next globalcrisis. o realise a genuine re orm o the global nancialsystem, banks need to become permeated with a truesense o sustainability.

The Working GroupWorldconnectors:Herman Wijffels, Ruud Lubbers, Herman Mulder,Nanno Kleiterp, ineke Lambooy, Adrian de Groot Ruizand Leontien Peeters.

    Advisor:Paul van Seters.

Supporters:Alide Roerink, Iem Roos, Roeland Muskens and Gabi Spitz.

HERMAN WIJFFELS working group chairTe largest gain in recent times, is the return o ethics ineconomy. Te biggest threat, on the other hand, is that wewill return to business as usual, once the crisis is over.

Public OutreachIn January 2010, the Working Group met with the Com -missie de Wit, a commission set up by the government toinvestigate the underlying causes o the nancial crisisand the need to re orm the Dutch nancial system.During this closed meeting the Worldconnectors pointedout that not enough attention is being given to issuesconcerning corporate social responsibility. Furthermore, they made recommendations or specic re orms in thebanking sector which were well received by the commission.

Te members o the nancial systems working grouphave been working together with FIER, a community oyoung bankers who want nancial institutions to increasetheir sense o responsibility. FIER and the Worldconnectorsco-organised a debate or young bankers in cooperationwith the Rabobank. Ruud Lubbers and ineke Lambooytook part in a panel led by ellow working group memberLeontien Peeters and exchanged ideas with over y

young pro essionals rom the Dutch banking sector. In2011 the cooperation between Worldconnectors andFIER will be continued.

Ruud Lubbers and Paul van Seters raised awareness on theneed to change the banking sector by publishing severalopinion articles, amongst others in the newspaper rouw.

    IT STARTSWITH ONE

    THEMESustainable World Citizenship

In 2010 the Working Group Sustainable World Citizenship continued thework that they started in 2009. This Working Group was set up to in-vestigate how to mobilise and activate citizens to contribute to a moresustainable world. The globalisation problems that the world faces, suchas the large economic differences between the North and the South, theclimate crisis and the scarcities of natural resources cannot be tackledby governments alone. In the opinion of the Working Group, individualscan and must make a difference by applying a sustainable lifestyle to alllevels of their daily life, rather than just at home or at work. The World-connectors are therefore inspired by the slogan of Ten Years EarthCharter It starts with one.

Years Earth Charter in the Peace Palace in Te Hague lastJune. In order to further elaborate on ways to stimulatesustainable world citizenship and to strengthen theWorldconnectors role as a catalyst or change, theWorking Group is currently working on a plan o action.

ANNA CHOJNACKA working group memberA group o individuals can do more than a single membero a group on their own. In order to make real changes, youhave to set aside your ego and thats a hard thing to do.

Public OutreachIn May 2010 the Working Group cooperated with theCentre or Global Human Emergence in the organisationo the con erence ee up or the Future with LesterBrown, providing ollow-up to the Worldconnectors boattrip or young sustainable leaders that took place in 2009.During the con erence a working method called Meshworkwas used to structure the activities. According to HermanWijffels Meshworking is one o the most hope ul innova-tions I have seen or dealing with the complex globalchallenges humanity is acing today. Te combination o

ace-to- ace collaboration processes with leading-edgeonline technology enables stakeholders to sel -organiseacross sectors rapidly and effectively or large scale impact.

Earlier last year, in January, the Worldconnectorsco-organised the youth network event Mind Our Busi-ness, in collaboration with the Earth Charter Youth

Network, Move Your World, VU University and PlanNetherlands. Te aim o the meeting was to bringtogether different young leaders who contribute to theircommunities and to the planet, in order to exchangelessons and experiences using the Earth Charter as astarting point. Masooma Yousu zai asked the participantsabout their experiences, creating common tipping points

or change. Many young leaders said that using creativemethods and the arts helps to get people on board, as wellas identi ying global commons, to which everyone canconnect. Emphasising that there is a personal connectionto global issues is probably the most important part omaking a difference. Te participants suggested simula-tion games and a more intensive integration o theEC-Netherlands into the world community.

The Working GroupWorldconnectors:Ineke Bakker, Sandra van Beest, Louk de la Rive Box,Anna Chojnacka, Rindert de Groot (co-chair), Carin tenHage, Herman Mulder (co-chair), Michel Scholte andAwraham Soetendorp.

Advisors:om van de Beek (MGMC) and Willemijn Kemp (Vital

    Interest).

Supporters:Koen Kusters, Ellen Lammers, Alide Roerink, Iem Roosand Gabi Spitz.

AWRAHAM SOETENDORP working group memberIn the global village, a personal story can become thetalk o the day in a blink o an eye. Sharing perspectiveand hope can open hearts and ampli y the whisper otruth. And when that happens, nothing is impossible!

Te Working Group was involved in researching ways tostrengthen the online network o the Worldconnectors, which led to the development o an online pilot plat orm

or dialogue. Trough technical developments, peoplearound the world can now communicate more easily andstand up or what they eel is important. Sharingknowledge and developing solutions in an inclusive waycan lead to innovative and effective strategies or solvingglobal problems. In this regard, the commitment andleadership o individual citizens becomes crucial. TeWorking Group developed a special statement It StartsWith One that served as input or the celebration o 10

In January 2010, the Dutch Scien-ti c Cou cil for Gov r m t Policy(WRR) presented a report entitledL ss Pr t sio , Mor Ambitio :Develop ment Aid that Makes a

Difference, recommending funda-mental changes in the organisationof Dutch development aid as wellas more structural attention forglobal public goods. The reportstirred up the debate on the futureof international cooperation inthe Netherlands and gave theWorldconnectors an opportunityto present their views duringthe process of policy making andth r by to truly i u c policy.

Civil SocietyIn the WRR report there is little attention or the role ocivil society in development. Also, in its paragraphs oncivil society, the report ocuses on the organisational andnancial set-up o Dutch civil society. Te World-connectors believe that the report lacks a reection on the

undamental role that civil society plays, in each and

every society, in the processes o social and societaldevelopment. With a second document, entitled CivilSocietys Role in Development, the Worldconnectorswanted to draw attention to civil societys crucial andautonomous role in development processes and in theshaping o a just and sustainable world, a role that iscoming under increasing pressure.

REN GROTENHUISchair working group civil society

Civil society organisations working in development havea role to play in creating an open society, in which thenotion o global citizenship is the cornerstone o ourliving together in the diverse reality o todays world.

Vision documentTe third and nal document o the triptych is theWorldconnectors Vision Document. In this documentthe Worldconnectors link these issues with previousthemes and highlight the important role o civil societyand the private sector as well as the key position owomen.

THEME The future of international cooperation

INFLUENCING POLICYOn 16 February 2010, the Worldconnectors organised aRoundtable to examine how they perceived this report andto take the rst steps towards a common reaction. Duringthis Worldconnectors Round able, it was decided that, under the coordination of Jos van Gennip, a number ofconstituent sectors o the World connectors would provideinput or a joint comment on the WRR Report. Tis

resulted in the creation o three documents, each preparedby a different Working Group, which contain severalrecommendations that complement each other.

Business & Development CooperationHerman Mulder and Nanno Kleiterp chaired theWorking Group that ocused on Business & Develop-ment Cooperation. Tis led to the document Moreentrepreneurship, coalitions and ambition, in whichrecommendations are given or a new comprehensive

ocus and a new governance model.

HERMAN MULDER chair working groupTe WRR report correctly ocuses on the importance oeconomic growth or developing countries. Withoutgrowth, there is no development and no means to reducepoverty. Te business sector is the most important driver

or realising economic growth and the creation o jobs. Bystimulating entrepreneurship in an environmentally andsocially sustainable way, people will be given theopportunity o becoming sel -sufficient.

problems. First o all how can it be possible to decidewhich country does need more aid. Tis sounds terriblyunhuman because some countries require investmentsin one thing or another... and all o those needs implyhuman needs and imply human li es. How can youchoose who lives and who not?? At the same time... thinking that A rica only requiresdevelopment is not true. Many countries still requirehelp inclusively in Europe who are struggling with manyissues. Latinamerica or example many countries arebetter but have the legacy o conict or tragedies andworking towards their growth may take years and years. Finally ocusing on only ten countries... implies prioritiz-ing some countries but politically may sound aspre erence and ar away rom being air.I would only consider this possibility i actually Nether-lands will commit with Fair rade with all the countrieswho are struggling against subsidies and barriers...theni they take out away the aid...countries may stillsurvive with exports arriving to all the corners oEurope.

According to the FAO, ood security exists when allpeople, at all times, have physical and economic access tosufficient, sa e and nutritious ood to meet their dietaryneeds and ood pre erences or an active and healthy li e.Tis stands in stark contrast with todays reality. Be orethe ood crisis, 850 million people worldwide wereestimated to be chronically hungry. oday, their numberis more than one billion. Based on the contributions o awide range o experts, the Working Group there orerecommends a drastic increase o the budget or globalagricultural development and ood security, with along-term commitment o at least ten years. Te Dutchgovernment should use the ODA budget to allocate atleast one billion Euros per year to this eld.

In order to makesure every good idea would be heard, the Worldconnectorsorganised an essay contest in cooperation with UnitedAcademics and the Rabobank Foundation. Participantswere asked to answer the ollowing question. Imagine:the Dutch government offers 1 billion euros per year foragricultural development to contribute to food securityand the eradication of hunger in the world. How would you utilise this money? Jerome Roos, a 25 year oldstudent rom Amsterdam, won the competition and wasinvited to the Round able. He presented his thoughtsand delivered valuable input or the recommendationsthat ollowed the consultation rounds.

    THEME Food Security

FIGHTINGGLOBALHUNGERSince the food price crisis of 2007-2008, the issue of food securityonce again features prominently on international policy and researchagendas. For the Worldconnectors this is also an important theme, since it is interconnected with many other global issues such asclimat cha g , th a cial crisis a d global huma s curity. ThWorldconnectors believe that the urgency of the issues at stakerequires immediate action from the Dutch government. But how andwhere should the Dutch government invest? Food Security

Growing Againstthe GrainInvesting in Smart Subsidies, Agricultural R&Dand Market Infrastructure to Eradicate WorldHunger and Achieve Global Food Securitywinning essay by Jerome E. Roos

Summary:Te challenge o eradicating world hunger and achievingglobal ood security is undoubtedly one o the mostpressing issues acing humanity in the 21st century. Withan estimated 925 million people going hungry in 2010(FAO 2010) and with the world population expected toincrease by at least another 2.3 billion people in the next 40years, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisa-tion has estimated that global ood production will need toincrease at least 70 percent by 2050 (FAO 2009). In thewake of the 2007-08 food crisis, it is becoming ever clearer

that eradicating hunger and achieving ood security willrequire an ambitious two-pronged approach: (1) a short-term action plan to allow the hungry o the world to eedthemselves; and (2) a longer-term commitment to continue

    The Working Group

expanding global ood production in the ace o rapidpopulation growth, protracted economic crisis andcommodity price volatility, aggravated climate shocks, diminishing water supplies and increased competition orscarce arable land. I the Dutch government were tocommit 1 billion per year to help developing countriesrise up to this challenge, it should invest the money notalong the lines o theoretical or ideological blueprints, buton the basis o practical lessons learned rom the past and

adapted to the widely divergent geographical, cultural andinstitutional contexts ound in the developing world.

The Worldconnectors deal with themes that are of great importancenot only to the current, but in particular to future generations. Lynn:One o our Round able Meetings coincided with theheated electoral struggle in the run-up to the Dutchgeneral elections. In our meeting we discussed the limitedscope o the public debate so ar; which politician was hiding

the sustainable long-term vision and the internationalperspective? ats when we decided to come with theKijk Verder / Look Beyond campaign. I loved how, in notime, a small group o committed people managed totranslate spontaneous thought into well thought-throughaction. Tat was one o the best moments o my rst yearas a Worldconnector!

Michel:I think Worldconnectors try to link global challengeswith global solutions. Not surprisingly, as a newcomerI learned a lot about both challenges and solutions.

As a follow-up to their mission to Washington DCand New York in 2009, the Youth and YoungProfessional Worldconnectors organised twoInspiration Dinings. A group of young refugeesand a group of young entrepreneurs were invitedfor an informal dinner with several expertWorldconnectors to exchange ideas and aboveall: to connect.

In the political capital o the Netherlands, Te Hague, young re ugees dined with Masooma Yousu zai, Karen van Oudenhovenvan der Zee and Ruud Lubbers todiscuss the current situation o re ugees all over the worldand, more specically, in the Netherlands. Tis in ormalgathering was co-hosted by FUSION, the CSR departmento the Hotelschool Te Hague. Te dinner was dividedinto three courses and three different themes: Identity,Trust and Wishes for the future .

Participant from FUSIONDuring the main course rust was the main theme.Every guest was asked i they trust the country in whichthey live and what could be changed in order to develop ahigher degree o trust. It evolved that norms and valuesare the same all over the world. In act, the ways they areexpressed is more varied within a country than it isbetween different religions. We concluded that the

government plays a big role in developing trust betweencitizen and citizen as well as between citizen and re ugee.

Te dinner or Young Entrepreneurs took place at the1%CLUBs office in Amsterdam. At the table were World-connectors Herman Mulder, Anna Chojnacka, MichelScholte and seven young entrepreneurs. Te inspirationalsetting enhanced the exchange o ideas: with each otherand with Worldconnectors.

Herman Mulder and Anna Chojnacka shared theirpersonal experiences and answered questions posed bythe young entrepreneurs. During the evening theentrepreneurs talked about their own business case anddiscussed trends in technology and issues involving thepursuit o social change.

In terms o global challenges, I learned that the currentand uture crises that we are acing are immenselycomplex. It takes knowledge and perseverance to graspthe dilemmas that occur when currently 7 billion people, and in 2050 9 billion people, are making use o ood,

    energy, water, orest and biodiversity.

In terms o effective solutions, I learned that the road toa sustainable and just world is bumpy and unsignposted. However, whether we drive ast or walk slowly, by car or onbare eet, we should anticipate and, most o all, keep going.

Lynn:I believe that the strength o the Worldconnectors is acombination o the sincere dedication o each individualto make a positive difference in the world, collectiveanalytical capacity and power ul networks.

Michel:And that they have key positions in our political, business and other social networks, so they can unctionrelatively easily as network brokers. Tis means that theycan connect ideas rom one network with resources romother networks. And we, as Youth & Young Pro essionalWorldconnectors, are one o these networks.

I think involving young people is equally as important asinvolving any other group o people, because the World-connectors is a collective enterprise that transcendsgenerations. I personally involve young people simplybecause I can reach them easily, as most o my riends areyoung.

A er my rst year as a Worldconnector, my conclusion isthat with willpower and a good plan we can releasebutteries, throw stones in calm streams and create thechange resonance needed or the challenges o the 21stcentury!

WORLDCONNECTORSTAKING ACTIONApart from the themes they select at the beginning of each year, Worldconnectors are on the look out fortopical events which call for immediate action.

Powerful women forsustainabilityA er last years success ul publication, rouw this year composed a new Sustainable op100: a list o the 100 most inuential people in the eld o sustainability. Worldconnectorswere pleased to see their co-chair Herman Wijffels in the nr 1 spot, but regretted the meagrenumber o women on the list. Tey elt action was required. o stimulate the contribution

o women on the issue o sustainability, the Worldconnectors working group Gender &Diversity organised a diner pensant with Herman Wijffels and the women on the list.During the meeting the sustainable women and men discussed the ways in which they cansupport and encourage more women to become leaders in the eld o sustainability, orinstance by coaching them and by recommending emale experts.

Look BeyondOne o this years important events in the Netherlandswas the election period. Even though many internationalissues need urgent attention, the political parties mainly

ocussed on internal affairs. Worldconnectors stronglyelt the need to step up and take action. And with the use

o social media, weblogs and videos they urged the Dutchpublic to Look beyond. Teir ull testimonials can still beread and watched on the Worldconnectors website.

SANDRA VAN BEESTIs it not utterly shame ul that currently one billionpeople are still living below the poverty line and that, now our economy is less prosperous, we pay them nomind during our political debates.

ALPHA BARRYAll the interesting points raised in a recent report by theDutch Scientic Council or Government Policy on thematter are barely touched upon in the campaign.

LYNN ZEBEDASustainability and international cooperation are certainlynot meant to be issues or back-to-nature reaks andtree-hugging hippies to bleat on about. Tese are PRE-CISELY the issues that concern each and every one o us.

SYLVIA BORRENTe Netherlands should play a positive international rolein the worldwide preservation and development o theglobal commons, i.e. clean air, sufficient ood and water, the orests, cultural and bio-diversity.these belong to alland should benet all.

MASOOMA YOUSUFZAIJournalists should be responsibly trained and above all, they must remain critical. It is not making news that isthe most important thing, but rather commitment and aconstructive criticism o (inter)national issues.

JANNET VAESSENSo many pressing issues present themselves at the moment that we must out onecessity solve all these crises simultaneously, which results in our being unable asindividuals to come to grips with the situation. For this reason, the WorldconnectorsGender & Diversity Statement is split up according to domain. In this way, everyonecan immediately see how he or she can make a contribution rom the perspective otheir own particular background. Tis was the purpose o the dinner: to investigate

rom the perspective o each o the participants how to propose concrete actions thatare benecial to sustainability whilst using gender and diversity as a starting point.

Johan van de GrondenIn Hans Dijkstal we have lost a capable and versatilepolitician who, guided by his power ul personal compass, did not give in to populist nonsense and remained true tohis liberal principles at precisely the time when it wasmost needed.

passed away. What was special about his perspective wasthe rational way in which he approached these issues, always pointing out the importance o the constitutionand particularly o Article 1. He regarded the principle oequal treatment or all as a leading principle in a pluri ormsociety. Hans was deeply concerned about developmentsin this country that make emotions rather than constitu-tional principles the basis or policies and practices. Ithink his ideas have stimulated us as Worldconnectors inthe past and I hope and expect that they will continuedoing so in the uture.

IN MEMORIAMHANS DIJKSTALIt was with great sadness that the Worldconnectors received the newsthat Hans Dijkstal had passed away on the 9th of May 2010. His dedicatedinvolvement as a Worldconnector and his motivation was an inspirationfor all. Interesting about the Worldconnectors, Hans Dijkstal said in hispersonal Worldconnector video, is the diverse group around the tablefrom different backgrounds and ages, stressing the need for a broadcooperation to reach the Millennium Goals and to raise support in allsocieties, in our case the Netherlands, to get everyone on the bandwagon. As Worldconnectors we aim to be a uni ying orce in aworld that is divided by poverty, scarcity and distrust. Teuni-polar world is coming to an end while global issues, such a climate change and the ood crisis, are becomingmore and more urgent. aking care o global commongoods is the most important and most pressing challengeo this century. Common goods are not something thatcan be given by one person to another, or that can beensured by one person alone. Common goods are theresult o collective efforts, not only o the
