    Facilitating Learning

    1. Search for the key concepts associated with paigets?

    JEAN PIAGET -Cognitive Developmental Theory

-Cognitive development involves changes in cognitive process and abilities.

n !iaget"s view# early cognitive development involves processes based $pon

actions and later progresses into changes in mental operations.

    KE C!NCEPT"

"chema#- describes both the mental and physical actions involved in

$nderstanding and knowing. Schemas are categories of knowledge that help $s to

interpret and $nderstand the world. t incl$des both a category of knowledge andthe process of obtaining that knowledge. %s e&periences happen# this new

    information is $sed to modify# add to# or change previo$sly e&isting schemas.

    '&ample( % child may have a schema abo$t a type of animal# s$ch as a dog. f the

child"s sole e&perience has been with small dogs# a child might believe that all

dogs are small# f$rry# and have fo$r legs. S$ppose then that the child enco$nters a

very large dog. )he child will take in this new information# modifying the previo$sly

e&isting schema to incl$de this new information.

A##imilation- )he process of taking in new information into o$r previo$sly

e&isting schema"s is known as assimilation. )he process is somewhat s$b*ective#

beca$se we tend to modify e&perience or information somewhat to +t in with o$r

pree&isting beliefs. n the e&ample above# seeing a dog and labeling it ,dog, is an

e&ample of assimilating the animal into the child"s dog schema.

'&ample( magine a yo$ng boy raised in a home that presents a stereotyped

schema abo$t another social gro$p. hen the yo$ng man moves away to college#

    he s$ddenly +nds himself s$rro$nded by people from this gro$p. )hro$gh

e&perience and real interactions with members of this gro$p# he realies that his

e&isting knowledge is completely wrong. )his leads to a dramatic change# or

accommodation# in his beliefs abo$t members of this social gro$p.

    Accommo$ationdoes not *$st take place in children/ ad$lts also e&perience

this as well. hen e&periences introd$ce new information or information that

    con0icts with e&isting schemas# yo$ m$st accommodate this new learning in order

to ens$re that what"s inside yo$r head conforms to what"s o$tside in the real world.

E%&ili'ration -!iaget believed that all children try to strike a balance

between assimilation and accommodation# which is achieved thro$gh a

mechanism !iaget called e$ilibration. %s children progress thro$gh the stages of

cognitive development# it is important to maintain a balance between applying

previo$s knowledge 2assimilation3 and changing behavior to acco$nt for new

knowledge 2accommodation3. '$ilibration helps e&plain how children are able to

move from one stage of tho$ght into the ne&t.

    4. 5ow will the vario$s theorist or learning help the teacher facilitate the learning

    process among the st$dents?

)hro$gh this !iaget theory the teacher can adapt what the theories said. )he

teacher will $nderstand the process of Cognitive 6evelopmental of one person. )herefore

she can easily apply it in their teaching. )he teacher teach how m$ch the capacity or

ability of the st$dents to perform activities or task# by giving some activities it will retain

to the st$dents what they learn from their teacher.
