Faces For FiFtyIn 2013 we celebrated the University of York’s 50th Anniversary and asked our community of staff, retired staff, friends, alumni and students to tell us who they thought had made a significant contribution to the University over the years.
The call for nominations resulted in a list of 83 individuals who were seen to have helped to make the University of York great: they have enhanced the experiences of staff, student and visitors to the University, as well as its global reputation.
This exhibition celebrates the contributions of those nominated through photography and quotes taken directly from the nominations.
These individuals provide a snapshot of the great people that York has seen over the years. They come from a range of academic disciplines and all walks of University life. Despite their differences they have commonality in that they have all contributed to the success of the University in some shape or form. They have made their contributions through teaching generations of students, by developing original research, by designing or building our campus, by helping others, planting trees, cooking meals, volunteering in the community, giving money, managing laboratories, running student societies and much more.
The physical exhibition of images and text will be open to the public as well as staff, students and alumni. A digital exhibition of the images will also be featured on the University website the week following the exhibition launch, allowing everyone to see the outcome of the project regardless of their geographical location.

The frames were funded by alumni and friends of the University through YuFund and Giving to York.
Thanks to all those who nominated individuals to be part of the exhibition, and to Suzy Harrison, John Houlihan, Ian Martindale, the University photographers, and the many other staff members and friends who provided photographs.
