Social Media

The best way to get people in South Carolina to do support you, is to first

join them in what they are already doing.

Politicians like to tweet and friend on Facebook, and a majority of staffers on

Capitol Hill say social media are an important way to communicate with constituents.

Facebook in 60 seconds

• Facebook is a free social networking service and website launched in February of 2004, operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.

• As of June 2011, Facebook has more than 674 million active users – more than 149 million users in the United States alone.

• According to the Nielsen Company, the average active social media user, logs in 19.2 times per month on Facebook, spending an average of 5 hours and 52 minutes on the site.

• According to a study by Starcom MediaVest Group and Rubinson Partners, Facebook makes up 56% of all shared content (up from 45% in August, 2010) on the web. Facebook allows you to share your passion and conviction.

Twitter in 60 seconds

• Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users updates (otherwise known as tweets) which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

• According to Twitter, Twitter has 175 million registered users.

• According to a study by Nielsen, the average internet user in the US spends close to 23% of his/her internet time on social networks.

• The average user spends 31min 17 sec per month on Twitter.

• A lot of stories break on Twitter before they reach the traditional news media.

• Smartphone applications allow short messages, geo tagging and picture uploads with the post.

Google + in 60 seconds

• Google+ (or Google Plus) is a new social network designed to go toe-to-toe with Facebook while emphasizing something Facebook doesn't: privacy.

• Google+ passed 18 million users on July 20, according to an analysis by Paul Allen.

• Google+ is the 42nd ranked social networking site in the U.S.uploads

• The average visit time on Google+ was five minutes and 50 seconds during the week ending July 19, 2011-up from four minutes and fifty two seconds the previous week.

• In comparison, users spent more than 21 minutes on Facebook.

Why do people use Social Media?

• ConnectingHow can you connect people to other people and things that will help them accomplish their goals?

• CollaborationHow can you help people collaborate with each other more easily?

• ConsumingHow can you reward people for consuming and sharing your content for you?

• SharingWhat can you give to people that will help them create more interesting content to spread?

• CreatingWhat can you share that will make South Carolina communities better?

What does social media do for us?

• Social media allows all wired agents to interact, share information, and forge some semblance of a professional relationship.

• An online presence is not a replacement for the local, face-to-face contacts, but rather a way to build, maintain, and strengthen these relationships.

• Organizations like the AgChat Foundation (http://agchat.org) are getting farmers engaged in social media, educating them about the technology and providing them with the tools to do this.

• It is a whole lot easier to spend 30 to 45 minutes a day utilizing Facebook or Twitter to communicate with farmers than to travel from location to location.

• If you do not use social media to share the truth, other organizations will tell their perspective to your constituency. Remember – a rumor is halfway around the world before the truth has got its boots on...

Develop a reverse-mentor strategy

• The concept of reverse mentoring is said to have begun a decade ago at General Electric when then-CEO, Jack Welch realized he and his management team had much to learn about the Internet.

• Welch required 600 top executives, himself included, to find younger mentors who were knowledgeable about the internet. Most of the mentors were in their 20s and 30s.

• Senior leaders in Coop. Extension need to find younger workers that "reverse-mentor" them to use social media for the success of Clemson University and their constituency.

• Reverse mentoring is a "win-win" relationship. The traditional one-way street becomes a two-way thoroughfare where employees of all ages can learn from each other.

• It is also a great retention tool for the younger generation of employees.

Embrace social media

• Farmers around the world embrace social media.

• Schedule time

• Those who fail to see the benefit of building relationships online are failing their organizations.

Create engaging content

• Create unique news about your area

• Ask timely questions

• Ask yes or no questions

• Ask specific questions

• Ask edgy questions

• Ask true or false questions

• Ask questions about a photo

• Ask poll questions

• Ask fun questions

• Ask preference questions

• Ask who’s attending an event

• Ask fill in the blank questions

• Reply and pay attention

It’s not what you say that matters, it’s what you do.
