WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Facebook has always had a bad reputation for protecting its user’s data and identity but now it has joined the Web’s most anonymous network.

Facebook has surprised the internet’s security community by launching a Tor hidden service - a version of its website that runs the anonymity software Tor.

WHAT IS TOR?

Facebook is the first Silicon Valley giant to officially support Tor. The network allows people to visit websites without being tracked and to publish sites without its content showing up on search engines.

Tor was originally designed by the US Naval Research Laboratory and is partly funded by the US government. It attempts to hide a person’s location and identity by sending data across the internet via a very circuitous route involving several ‘nodes’.

You access the site through a Tor browser at https://facebookcorewwwi.onion/.

WILL YOU JOIN THE DARK SIDE WITH FACEBOOK?

The social media giant decided to create the ability for its users to connect directly to their network via the anonymising service Tor.

It was already possible to access Facebook via Tor; however you could have previously been mistaken for hacker. Now the new set up means up data is encrypted.

Facebook’s entry into the ‘dark’ side of the worldwide web may appeal to people in places where the network is block. China, Iran and North Korea are among a few countries who have attempted to prevent access to the social media site.
