sending them gifts, using facebook applications, chatting with others and so

on. Facebook has a number of features with which users may interact. They

virtual "poke" to each other; Photos where users can upload albums and

photos; Status, which allows users to inform their friends of their

whereabouts and actions. Users are notified about their friends activities via

    Notification.

Users can set Privacy Settings as per their own wish. They can limit the group

of users who can see their profiles, photo albums, basic information, walls,

commenting on their statuses, wallposts and photos, sending messages and

    friend requests.

Paul Butler, a facebook engineering intern, tried to create an image of the

locations of facebook users around the world through drawing glowing lights

in the world map and connecting them with one another with the same light.

As his visualization progressed, he realized it was creating a rough outline

of the world! The image of the Facebook World is given below:

    History of Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg created facebook in October, 2003 while attending Harvard

as a sophomore. At first he named the site Facemash which included only

photos and basic information that he hacked from Harvards protected

computer networks and private dormitories. The Harvard administration shut

the site down soon and charged Zuckerberg for

breach of security and violating individual privacy.

But the charges were dropped and Zuckerberg

opened the site to his classmates as a social study

    tool.

In February, 2004, Zuckerberg changed the name

of the site to Thefacebook. Initially its

membership was restricted to Harvard University.

    Eduardo Saverin (business aspect), Dustin

    Moskovitz (programmer), Andrew MacCollum

(graphic artist), and Chris Hughes soon joined

Zuckerberg to help promote the website and by

March, 2004, it soon opened to the other

universities of United States and Canada.

Thefacebook was incorporated in the summer of 2004 and the entrepreneur

Sean Parker became the companys president. The company dropped The

from its name after purchasing the domain name facebook.com in 2005. The

popularity of facebook began to spread rapidly as it expanded its membership

eligibility. In September, 2006, facebook was opened to everyone with age 13

and older with a valid e-mail address.

A graph of total active facebook users worldwide is shown below:

teenagers and young-adults. It is estimated that every one among five

Bangladeshi internet users has a facebook account. Based on the number of

facebook users, Bangladesh positions 59 among the countries of the world.

Only a few people can be found now in the urban areas of Bangladesh who

doesnt know about this social networking site. People are signing in to

Business people and private firms sign up in facebook with a view to

promoting their products and services. They can build a Page or start a

Group and invite people to join. Thus they can also make people awareabout their organizations or business firms. People who are doing jobs are

also opening facebook accounts for making their workplace more convenient.

It is helping them to retain an effective communication with their superiors,

colleagues and juniors. If there is an urgent order or news that should be sent

to the employees, a facebook Message is all it is needed.

Facebookers are not only comprised of young users, but also old people-

though the number of elderly people using facebook is very low in

Bangladesh. This generation of people signs up in facebook to connect with

their old friends and relatives. Especially after their retirement, they find it

difficult to pass their leisure hours. Facebook helps them to stay connected

with their friends, many of these senior people even found friends of their

school-lives via facebook. It also offers them a chance to communicate with

their relatives living at different places of the country or abroad.

    Bangla Version of Facebook

Grameenphone, the largest market player in telecommunication sector of the

country, has taken initiative to introduce Bangla version of Facebook.

so they are doing the job for the benefit of the Bangla-speaking people who

regularly use the site. They will be able to use Bangla not only in updating

statuses and writing comments, but also will see every single sentence in

Bangla that is now commonly seen in English. Facebook authority is

communicating with Bangla language experts for its proper application.

Bangla on facebook will encourage others to generate more Bangla contents

    for Internet users.

    Controversies Regarding Facebook

On May 30, 2010, facebook was temporarily banned in Bangladesh for

publishing satirical images of Prophet Muhammad (SM). The government had

blocked access to the site for the reason of hurting the religious sentiments of

the country's majority Muslim population by carrying offensive images of

Muhammad (SM). Some links in the site also contained obnoxious images of

Bangladeshi political leaders including Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, current Prime

Minister Sheikh Hasina and the leader of the opposition party Begum Khaleda

Zia. Two men were arrested on these regard by Rapid Action Battalion inDhaka. On June 6, 2010, Bangladesh restored access to facebook after those

pages were erased and the offending images were removed.

    For the likes

In many ways, Facebook has impacted on the social life and activity of people.

One of such impacts is with the ability to reunite lost family members and

    friends.

Facebookhas completely redefined the term friend. Its like the Greeks

definition of love. There are 4 types: Agape (brotherly love), Eros (passionate

love), Philia (friendship), and Storge (familial love). In the Facebook world,

    there are also 4 types:

    1. Old friends from high school and college.

    2. Family and friends of the family.

    3. Internet friends youve never met in person but you truly admire.

    4. People you dont remember but you accepted their requestbecause you

    had like, 30 mutual friends.

Social InteractionWhen it comes with communication, digital communities like Facebook hits

the number one spot. It can allow it users to track down long lost friends,

acquaintances and relatives that they haven't seen for years. Users are able to

meet new groups and to interact with their likes and dislikes. This can also be

a perfect gateway for love to bloom in a dating process.

    Student Connection

Since Facebook is popular with the younger masses due to similar interests

and habits, it also opens a door for connecting student organizations and

ideas. Organizations can post on their walls updates regarding upcoming

    events and gatherings.

    Economy

Companies can advertise their products and in return for the space provided

by the site, the advertisers pay a certain amount of money enabling the site to

  • 7/29/2019 Facebook in Bangladesh (2)

    12/16

raise revenue. Most of the advertisements posted are aimed for the majority of

Facebook's population which is mainly students of all kinds. It's a win-win

    situation.

    Photo sharing

One of Facebooks greatest strengths, the photo sharing feature is a great

advantage for many. Photos can be uploaded to Facebook with ease and this

can be achieved directly from a mobile phone too. The user can organize the

photos into albums and set restrictions as to who can see the photos and who

cannot. The photo sharing feature also features a comment which is very

innovative method of conversing with pictures and opinionating them.

Facebook by large has a lot of advantages over other social networking media

which have contributed to its success. Its aesthetic feel is also one of its

strengths and as mentioned before, everyone has a different take to Facebook

and uses it to their own specific advantages. This flexibility of use that

Facebook offers makes it highly customizable for professionals as well as

personal use making it one of the best communication mediums available

    today.

    For TheDislikes

Facebook has been criticized for many things, but mostly for being a source of

destruction that can turn Facebook users into real social networking addicts.

    Stalking people, hacking into

    accounts, getting too much involved

    with unknown people and being

deprived from real life are some of

    the broadly recognized negative

    effects of Facebook. Last year,

    Facebook was temporarily banned in

the country on charges of malicious

propaganda against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and hurting religious

    feelings.

Less Social Interaction With The Real World

It is obvious that people have a lot of friends in Facebook, but how often do

they interact with them in the real world? Social skills are very important in

the world we live in. Being able to hold conversations and relate to other

people helps people not only in their business lives but also in their daily lives.

But these people using Facebook are becoming addicted and dependent upon

this social network. These addicts are using Facebook as another excuse,

upon the many, as a reason why they are constantly hunched over their

computers. If these people continue to constantly use these social networks

as their primary means of communicating, their social skills will slowly

diminish and their daily lives will be drastically altered.

    Reduce The Time For Study

The greatest motivating factor for students to use technology is to connect to

others; to socialize. Their irresistible need to connect with their peers,

  • 7/29/2019 Facebook in Bangladesh (2)

    14/16

coupled with the development of 24/7 accessible technologies, can make the

use of sites like Facebook all consuming. This also reduces the time for their

study which could lead to an adverse effect in their education.

    Addiction at its worst...

    Affecting Emotions & Relationships

Because Facebook adapts a free-flowing information environment, some usesit to target on other's emotional depression. Targeting the emotions may

cause a negative attitude towards a person's social relationship, physical

activity, and academic issues. Talk about long distance relationships,

Facebook would be the one answer friends, family and lovers can count on.

Though conducted on a distance, the system can still connect relationships

right that very moment. But because relationships are built and strengthened

just because of an Internet site, it tends to become weaker and it supports less

emotional and most especially physical contact.

    Affecting Privacy

Another negative effect of Facebook is how accessible it makes people. Once

one has signed up for a Facebook account, they have made themselves

  • 7/29/2019 Facebook in Bangladesh (2)

    15/16

completely exposed to the world. Anyone who wants to find out anything

about them will be able to find it on Facebook. Facebook can also affect

someone when trying to join a club or finding a new job. Many organizations

and business now include social networking sites like Facebook in

their background checks of potential members and employees. They'll be able

to see all of their information, age, location, education and works, relationship

status. Plus they may judge by looking at the pictures posted friends.

Unfortunately most people don't realize that Facebook opens up their identity

to millions of people and some of these may use what they find against them.

Applications in Facebook tend to take up unnecessary timeOne of the most addictive things on Facebook is all of the games that are

available. People waste hours upon hours playing games against their friends

instead of doing work or spending time with their family.

So, it's not everything wrong about Facebook. In many cases, we can catch up

with old friends, find valuable information, promote work and business,

support really important causes and meet people who can be real friends in

the process. What is wrong with Facebook is the ritualistic involvement thatturns into addiction and belligerently deprives people from their real life by

triggering them to log on several times a day.
