WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Facebook has been tinkering again but this time it is with their policy instead of their layout, for a change!

The social media giant has performed a complete U-turn to previous statements and apologised to transgender and drag queen users, whose accounts were deleted for violating the ‘real name’ policy.

WHAT CHANGED?

Facebook has previously insisted that users of the site use their ‘real names’ in order to avoid abuse and impersonation. Several hundred accounts were flagged by a single user for flouting the company’s policy.

A San Francisco drag queen Sister Roma launched the campaign against Facebook in September; she said the policy was a challenge for people who use an alternative public identity.

However, Facebook continued to insist that the real name policy was designed to protect the online community and improve the levels of accountability by the users.

WHAT DOES THIS CHANGE MEAN?

Facebook has changed its policy after this recent controversy and now calls for people to use the authentic name they use in real life on their Facebook profiles.

Chief product officer, Chris Cox apologised and acknowledged that the experience had been painful for those involved.

The #mynameis hashtag that was part of the campaign has turned into a message of celebration and a planned street protest in San Francisco will now celebrate the policy amendment.
