Facebook provides the means for a real conversation

• The conversation is multi-media, with theuse of words, drawings, pictures, videos...

• The conversation is both verbal and non-verbal, through dedications(songs), gestures(pokes) and emotions(gifts, feelings)

• It can be either instantaneous (with chatapplications and presence indicators) orasynchronous (with wall posts, messages)

• The conversation takes place between realpersonas (few hidden identities with avatarsor nicknames) and without outsideintervention(no moderation or censorship)

• It respects the user's privacy if they sodesire: only 1 in 10 users changes his/herprivacy settings.

CLASSROOMPEDAGOGICAL APPROACH 1 – DIFFERENCE

INTERACTIONS

• Teacher offers tentative readings and lesson guidelines• Student reflects, responds, and produces writing• Students work becomes course reading and

determines lesson specifics• Students evaluate their and fellow students writing

and dialogue with teacher about their success

• Teacher Chooses assignment and readings• Teacher predetermines lesson content• Student consumes this & produces an "Outcome“• Teacher informs students of their level of success

CLASSROOMPEDAGOGICAL APPROACH 4 – STEPS

• Encourage “expert” presentations• Elicit personal examples during class discussion• Incorporate students’ lives into reading and

writing assignments• Assign self reflective informal writing• Tap into students’ desire for publicity

CLASSROOMPEDAGOGICAL APPROACH 5 – PRIVACY PRIORITIES

• Explore Facebook privacy settings as it has amazing options.• No need to be friends with each other to be in same group.• Activity can be leaded by one or two of the promising student in

the class under the guidance of professor. Or else…• Create a teacher profile separate from your personal profile

Group 1 Created parallel to classroom activity where I was physically involved in the class as a student.

Group 2 Created parallel to classroom activity of junior students where I was physically NOT involved in the class as a student however know the content and aware of recent events.

Group 3 Created to check the possibility of delivering a content as mode of distance learning and identifying the difficulties .

Group 4 Created to make notes in routine project activity

CLASSROOMCASESTUDY 3 - OBSERVATIONS 2

Using FB as Student with Knowledge of Usability Standard:

Facebook almost has all the features of LMS (Learning Management System).

A FB group is effective tool for group communication and few enhancements in usabilityfeatures will make it more effective.

For education purpose we must have a added facility of creating a “Class” may be, whichwill have few features from Pages and Few features from Group . This will help Facebookto grow as effective medium in education.

I have not included detailed usability features as this is not my purpose here but caneffectively communicate in case of need.

This activity should be conducted by some one who is enthusiastic student in class andcan consult professor to make it happening place.

CLASSROOMCASESTUDY 4 - OBSERVATIONS 3

My Definition of Literacy in 21st Century:

Learning multimedia basics will be basic requirement for students or maybe an urgent requirement in developed countries. Every student shouldlearn how to edit images, create graphics, preparepresentations, develop animations, edit videos and in all should learn toUse social media effectively.

FACEBOOK &

CLASSROOMCASESTUDY 5 - OBSERVATIONS 4

Some Observations for faculty:

Students are digital Natives, used to modern technologies and new means ofcommunication and as such they would adapt quickly to the use of Facebook asa working tool.

Though students do not see Facebook as an useful work tool yet (54% of therespondents), it should not be overlooked, as they lack perspective

Given the right incentive and evolution of the platform, they could adaptquickly and turn Facebook into a productive tool:

• Nurturing Connections that could be useful to their company• Organizing themselves and creating work groups dedicated to a specificproject

CLASSROOM

Some Observations for faculty:

Proposed Age Group: This is easy to conduct with Mature students as they are aware about the norms in communication in social media and are aware of privacy statements, which makes life easy.

Privacy Settings: No need to be friends with every student as people can be a part of a group with out being in friendliest of each other.

May be you can start this as open group activity and ask people to join in and once all are on board, you can change it to a secrete group.

Activity can be leaded by one or two of the promising student in the class under the guidance of professor.Or else a Create a teacher profile separate from your personal profile.

Follow Students Activities: It will help them to understand/track the students activities as routine.

Communication: Flexible and informal communication will help them to handle the class more effectively.

Time Effective: It will help them to reduce on personal tutorial activity with each student as most of the students have similar pattern of enquiries and can be solved in one go.

CLASSROOM

Student 1: Its been great for getting to know each other better, its useful to come to ask a questionabout our work as everyone is in the one place. Its been a powerful tool for encouraging each other

Faculty 1: I have found it helpful to stay in touch with your activities (not spying, honest!).

Student 2: Using Facebook as an educational aid is something I would describe as a pleasure and ameans to interact with other students. for me, it motivates me to complete weekly objectives.

Student 3: I think FB is a good tool to keep in touch with others. FB has notifications which are goodto get updated quickly. FB has some apps like "Ask question" which is excellent for survey / asking forideas. However, it also depends on the habit of each person. Sometimes I open FB when I havefinished my work, and think "oh now time to relax". So don't really want to do something so seriousand important on FB. Also because using FB tends not to be a working place, so sometimes you loosethe chances to interact with some people (for example: Matt may not check FB very frequently). Afterall, I think your idea is great. You could even suggest this to Facebook so that they can improve andadd specific functions for online learning :)

Student 4: I would say that FB is just another way to stay in touch with my networks. So far, I havebeen using the archived info for a few ideas, but I've been limiting myself to that. As Maggie pointedout, its great for surveys, although I haven't used them for collecting academic data. FB can neverreally be a study tool for me. It's because I've got too many distractions here.

FACEBOOK &

CLASSROOM

Student 6: I found it 50/50. I use Facebook solely as a means to stay in touch with friends, which iswhy I like it. it's stress free, so to bring school to Facebook was quite unnerving for me because Ikinda felt like my social life was being invaded by work. I also think if this was brought into schools itcould open a door to a whole new level of cyber bullying...maybe. on the other hand though, it isgood to have an area where people check constantly where you know your questions will beanswered and also to have a place where people can update everyone on their work.

Student 6: I think face book is a very powerful platform. Easier platform to keep in touch. it's amazinghow everyone's life is a update here. Your never away gem the world. I found fronds after 10yrs whowent junior school with me. It's also amazing cause u can categorize ppl on privacy bases. Never reallyfeel violated. it's very user friendly. It's a multiple cultural country by itself. Games are a variety overhere. As per having an educational platform , I think it will b cool and different . It's available toeveryone and updates are always notified immediately. Everyone's get a smart Phone these days sowhere ever they are it's available to them. Never away from the world*

Student 7: I think its a very useful tool especially for staying up-to-date with our work in-progress. Theconnectivity value is invaluable as it encourages connections, allowing you to stay in contact withfriends, colleagues, lecturers, and employers. (Builds networks!) I also agree with Matt, in the sensethat I would use it as a way in which to stay in touch with friends, more so. Having said this, I havefound (through this project) that it can be an excellent platform to aid the marketing process. I thinkmany companies are lacking in promotion via platforms such as FB, and utilizing such a tool, can reallyboost the marketing of a company, product etc. And again, I think it shows advances in particularfeatures such as the surveys, which are quick, and serve there purpose well. Personally, I think I'm50/50 with it - as it can prove massively effective, but can also be quite the distraction too!
