Face Mask Sewing Instructions Adapted by Softstar from freesewing.org

Parts Needed for 1 Mask:

• Two outer layers of woven, 100% cotton material,

cut to pattern.

• Two inner layers of woven, 100% cotton material,

cut to pattern.

• One 11” strip of elastic (button-hole or flat/woven)

• Two matching shoelaces (may vary in design and

color between masks)

• Thread, preferably 100% cotton

Outer/Inner Layer Pattern Piece Key:

Step 1: Join center seam

Set machine to straight stitch, set stitch length to 3 or 4.

The curved edge is the center of the mask. Sew the curved edges with 3/8” seam allowance.

Repeat this step for both the outer layer of fabric, and the inner layer of fabric.

Step 2: Make an Elastic/Shoelace Sandwich and Sew

Open inner layer and flatten seam allowance. Lay flat on work surface with right side up, seam

allowance should be touching the table.

Place 11” elastic at notches closest to the mask top, elastic will stretch across center seam.

There is a single notch that indicates mask top, refer to diagram below. Hang elastic ¼” off

edges of inner layer.

Place one shoelace at notch closest to mask bottom and below elastic placement, shoelace will

stretch into center of mask and ¼” will hang off edges of inner layer. Repeat with remaining

shoelace and notch.

Open the outer layer and flatten seam allowance. With right side down and seam allowances

up, place outer layer on top of inner layer with elastic and shoelaces sandwiched between.

The mask should now have both layers on top of each other with good sides together and

elastic and shoelaces sandwiched between them. Refer to diagram below.

It may be helpful to pin elastic and shoelaces in place before sewing.

Sew around the mask with 3/8” seam allowance, make sure to backstitch at the beginning.

Refer to diagram below.

Remember to be careful not to catch the elastic or shoelaces in the seam, apart from the four

areas of attachment. It can be useful to clip the loose ends together in a bundle before sewing,

to ensure they don’t extend into the seam where they shouldn’t.

When a shoelace or elastic is reached sew over it, then backstitch and keep sewing to ensure

they are caught and won’t rip out when in use.

Make sure to leave an opening about 2” to 3” in length, so the mask can be turned right-side out

later, and backstitch when you’ve completed sewing around the mask.

Trim off shoelace tip that extends outside the mask edge before turning mask right-side out.

Trim any corners of the seam allowance that might cause unneeded bulk and could keep the

mask from lying flat and tightly against the face.

Step 3: Turn the mask inside-out

Reach through the 2” to 3” opening and carefully pull the mask through to turn it right-side out.

Take a long dowel or the blunt end of a sewing tool and push out all four corners. This ensures

the mask lies flat and tightly against the face and reduces unnecessary bulk at the corners of

the mask and will make topstitching easier.

Step 4: Close open side of the mask and topstitch around edge

Make sure the opening where the mask was turned is folded neatly inside, then top-stitch

around the entire mask, using a ¼” seam allowance, backstitch to finish seam. Trim any long

threads.

Fold mask neatly and place in Ziploc bag.
