As timely as the leaves begin to change their colour, so too do the beauty and fashion industry as soon as fall comes around. Be-fore you know it, quintessential fall hues and textures make their debut amongst new collections displayed in the storefronts. This transition gives way to a more dramatic, sophisticated palette, as the neons and lightweight chambrays are put away for another year. Don’t get me wrong, fashion and beauty in the warmer months can be fun too, but fall is what I live for. I’ve forecasted five nail polish shades that will have your nails looking fresh for this fall season. I mean, what screams fall better than a vamped up manicure? Nothing can beat those decadent oxbloods and edgy textures in my books!
ROYAL BLUE Whether frosted, creme, or matte, this shade looks amazing on just about every skin tone and will be sure to get some double-takes. Vibrant hues such as this make for the perfect pop of colour contrasted against a monochromatic outfit. My personal favourites this season are OPI’s St. Mark’s The Spot and Zoya’s Sia.
TAUPEWhat’s great about fall is the perfect harmony achieved between dra-matic and subtle. That’s why taupe is a go-to shade for fall because it’s the more dramatic cousin to paler nude shades we saw in the warmer months. Taupe is just a little darker, but a lot more trendy for this sea-son. Some great taupe polishes are Essie Chinchilly and Zoya’s Rowan Satin.
COPPERThis shade is sophisticated and elegant, but still packs a big punch. It’s fun to play with metallics in the fall as they coordinate well with accessories and footwear. Top picks for copper polishes this season are Essie’s Leggy Legend and Butter London’s Trifle.
GREYI don’t like grey skies, but I sure love a grey manicure! This cool shade gives off just the right amount of edge to complete those fierce fall outfits. I’m loving Illamasqua Ele-ment and China Glaze Stone Cold.
BORDEAUXCan’t forget this fall classic! A good vampy red is a must-have in every nail lover’s stash. Perhaps the most notorious fall shade of the bunch, but it exudes that classic, crisp elegance that fall is all about. I can’t get enough of Sephora Formula X Ignite and Nars Chinatown.
Choosing the right polish is one thing, but choosing a finish is an-other. If you’ve had enough of the glossy creme look for a while, try a matte topcoat on any polish to turn up the cool factor of your manicure by a hundredfold. If that doesn’t do the trick, a glitter topcoat gives just the right amount of glitz for those special occasions. Heck, everyday is a good day for glitter!
So what are you waiting for? Time to get those nails looking fabulous for fall!

Stepping into M.R.K.T.’s show-room in Downtown Los Angeles is a very neo-centric experience. You are welcomed with pristine white high-rise walls and a modern countenance of geometric blocks of robust color: Their collection of bags line neatly against the walls and decorate the shelves like elegant furniture, their strong prominent lines mimicking towering skyscrapers of the city skyline. The bags populate the showroom like a miniature city, and instead of steel and concrete, the city is comprised of modernized felt, vegan leather, and eco friendly materials . It’s a modern metropolis in its own sense as these bags are reproductions of the urban lifestyle. Shaun Nath, one of the co-founders of M.R.K.T. and introduces himself with gracious hospitality. We then take a seat comfortably resting in the midst the city of bags.
Founded by Tom Pen and Shaun Nath in 2010, M.R.K.T. (Mad Rabbit, Kicking Tiger) finds itself with an interesting conception. Pen, whone is a Harvard graduate in design, had a laser cutter to play with. With some playful experimentation, had discovered that
felt cut could be cute with surgeon-like precision. The peers of the two took interest in what came out of their playful mock ups and suggested they started making goods. This inspired the duo to begin making wallets, computer sleeves, and journal covers. Within the following six months of that excursion eventually resulted them to renting out a small space in Shanghai which led to the opening of a small “flagship” store. The tiny flagship attracted many of the creatives of the neighborhood, and became what the two considered a beacon for the creatives of the urban community. Both Nath and Pen came up with the name Mad Rabbit, Kick-ing Tiger as an attention grabber. “We wanted something to make people go ‘whoa’,” Nath tells me. But it means much more than that. To them, the Mad Rabbit represents the build up of creative energy, and the Kicking Tiger is the kinetic release of that same pent up creativity in tangible space. Together, the two elements go hand in hand in planning out and eloquently executing their business on both creative and physical fronts. Since then M.R.K.T. has long moved out of their small shop and
has now reached global distribution with their products being found in 100+ re-tailers found in North America, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and Beijing among many.
M.R.K.T has been able ac-quire this much success due to their uniqueness as a brand. They challenge the norm of designer bags aim to be a trendsetting modernist by redefining the benchmark of what a bag should be. They stand at the forefront of the race in design and it shows heavily through-out each and every single one of the pieces. “A lot of bags today collapse on themselves,” Nath Tells me. “The bags we produce represent the structural substance of the city dweller life. Our aim is for the city dweller. We live in the city leading an urban and modern lifestyle. We aim to celebrate that.” In a highly populated market where tradi-tionalist cues are high in favor, M.R.K.T. provides bold statements with their pieces that take on highly forward-think-ing design.
10
The brand also maintains an ethos that the upper echelons of design should still be accessible to all. M.R.K.T. accomplishes this with highly competitive pricing that changes accordingly to tier. Typically, M.R.K.T. is for the young aspiring creative given their bold colors and robust shapes, but utilizing this model MRKT opens its doors to all crowds. Each line of bags will take on the original design elements, but will be offered in different variations according to price. For ex-ample, all the same lines and shapes will remain present in any given partic-ular piece, but one variation may have felt while the next tier up will use vegan leather; Different materials at different price points to cater to the different crowds. It’s a rather ingenious model that allows the company to stand confi-dently aside their belief of accessibility. This allows consistent design regard-less of price point, truly giving access to top-end design at nearly every price
point. As mentioned prior, M.R.K.T. uses eco-friendly and renewable mate-rials and is highly recognized because of this. The use of such materials acts as a huge indicator that separates MRKT from the main steady of other major bag companies that produce in traditional nylon and canvas. By using new-age materials MRKT aims to incorporate unique properties whilst taking unconventional twists, creating pieces that can stand on their own compared to traditional canvas bags that collapse when laid out. MRKT has even developed a new fabric in which they call SPR FLT which is pieces of felt which have been seared and un-dergo a special process which allows it to become even more sturdier and waterproof, providing an extremely rig-id fabric to work with. A lot of testing is done with these materials prior to bag production to ensure the most durable and lasting experience can be provid-
ed to their customers. M.R.K.T. as a whole can be seen as a team of innovators that challenge what is generally accepted as a bag. But is a bag merely just an accessory to our everyday lives? As citizen of present-day society, we are part of a new and evolving lifestyle. We live in a modern era where the jungle we trek through is made up of towering high-rises and rigid structures that do not waver and even the strongest of winds. – M.R.K.T.’s bags are just that. “We aim to celebrate that,” Nath tells me one more time, “It’s really some-thing to be proud of.”
