News from Student Council Student council will be participating in Make a Difference Day, a national day of giving. It is celebrated on the 4th Saturday of October. This year it will take place on October 27th.

We will be working on two projects: Mountains of Mittens and S.A.N.T.A (Send a New Toy to Appalachia), collect-ing items to help underprivileged children in Appalachia, KY who are without winter clothing and presents at Christmas time.

Fabyan Families are encouraged to donate a pair of warm mittens, hats or scarves and/or an unwrapped toy for a child. We will be collecting items during October 22-26. Both items should be new items. Suggested toys include: baby dolls, Barbie dolls, puzzles, board games, blocks, action figures, trains, trucks, cars, sports balls, sports equipment, craft kits. Please do NOT donate toys needing electricity or batteries. There will be boxes around the school during this week to drop any items students bring in.

We really appreciate your support!

Letter from the Principal

So, I was driving my high-schoolers to school today (they just love having their mother drive them to school which means they don’t get the car), and I noticed many yards filled with signs to demonstrate what the person stands for--signs of campaigns and beliefs—Romney/Ryan; Obama/Biden, etc. Believe me when I say I am not going to get into politics, but I would like to move more toward a deeper insight into standing for what we believe in as a great picture. There are many ways to express your beliefs and one of the ways is through signs. Another way is through your voice. Students at Fabyan this week were able to voice their belief in what they stand for at school. I had the pleasure of asking each grade level during lunchtime and classtime to come up with our expectations to post throughout our school. Their beliefs and expectations help us build the strong foundation and are a cornerstone to a positive, school climate. It should not be surprising to you, but it was overwhelming that students want a bully-free zone. Words and actions are to be used to encourage and not to intimidate.

Students did an outstanding job of helping me come up with rules and ideas to continue our positive cli-mate that we have at Fabyan. These rules that our students decided will be posted throughout our school help provide a visualization and a reminder of what we believe in and expect. We also talked about a sign that is already posted by our office—“ What you do shows who you are.” When we follow our expectations, we can be proud of who we are and what others see. As adults, we have to remember that our actions speak louder than our words. We have many young faces watching what we do on a daily basis and our actions should be used to encourage and not to intimidate.

This weekend, enjoy the Autumn weather and talk to your child(ren) about the expectations that we have at school—in the lunchroom, at recess, throughout the school day. Be sure to talk about your be-liefs and as a family, come up with your own expectations in the home.

Please attend our PTO meeting on Tuesday, October 16th at 7:00 in the library. At the meeting, we will be talking about our School Improvement Plan and it will be a great way for you to let me know your beliefs and expectations for our school.

Library News…. What an exciting week ahead in the library! We have an author

coming to visit!

Carolyn Crimi will be joining us on Wednesday October 17 at Fabyan. She will be pre‐senting to all of the classes that day on the writing process and how she gets her ideas for her books. All of this will be done with a humorous, engaging approach.

That evening, she will be joining our book fair and presenting her Halloween Book and Boo Fest. This event will be fun‐filled, so I hope your family can join us! If you ordered her books, they will be autographed by the author. I know this will be a fun and wonderful learning experience for our students. If you would like to learn more about Carolyn Crimi, please visit www.carolyncrimi.com

5th Grade Library Helpers is up and running! Our team of dedicated students comes in once a week on their sched‐uled day during lunch recess. So far they have helped with seasonal decorations, and library activity cards. I appreci‐ate their help and willingness to learn. If your fifth grader would still like to participate, there is still time. Have them stop in the library for more information.

Thank you!

Fabyan’s Frightful Halloween - Fabyan Halloween classroom parade and parties for Grades Kinder-garten through 5 will be held on Wednesday, OCTOBER 31ST– Please note the schedule be-low:

AM Kindergarten Parade 9:15 am Promptly PM Kindergarten and Grades 1-5 Parade 1:00 PM Promptly

Weather permitting, the parades will be held outdoors on the school grounds. Parents, grandparents and other family members are invited to the Halloween Parades, and to enjoy the “photo opportunity” as the classes parade around the exterior of the school building: The parade route will begin with the students exiting out the playground/music doors and parading around the playground surface area starting by the basketball courts and proceeding to the front of the building to re-enter through the main entrance doorway.

In case of inclement weather, the parades will be held in the Fabyan gym. If the parade is held in the gym, visitors to the parade will be able to enter the building through the main entrance door-way and proceed immediately into the Gym for their “photo-opportunity.”

Room parties will be held following the Parade. We ask all parents and visitors to remember that only designated Room Parents who are helping with the parties may go to the classrooms. Room Parents will check in at the office. Pre-printed name tags for all designated room parents will be given out upon check-in.

Kindergarten through 5th graders may wear basic costume elements to school. They may add ele-ments to their costume prior to the parade. Masks may be worn for the parade, as long as they do not obstruct the child’s vision; however, face make-up is not allowed. Parents are asked to ap-prove the costumes for appropriateness in a school setting, (i.e. no weapons or gang displays, or any costumes or masks that would upset a younger child). If you have specific questions, please contact the front office. –Thank you
