Fabulous Footballers

Fly the Flag Our vision to Care, Challenge and Inspire was clearly evident last

week in Dubai when our year 5 and 6 girls and boys football

teams travelled to the BSME Football Competition. All of the

children showed fantastic team work and care for each other on

our travels. They rose to the challenges presented, particularly

our girls who were competing in their first competitive match

together, and above all they inspired each other, their parents

who came to support them and their teachers. Mr Hashem, Mr

Darren and Miss Claire were so proud of each and every one of

them throughout the competition not only for their fantastic

football but their teamwork, camaraderie and sportsmanship. The

girls came a very credible seventh and the boys finished third

narrowing losing in the semi-final to the eventual winners of the

competition. Huge congratulations to both teams.

…this week we have been having lots of fun with our new teacher Miss Vikki and our new TLA Miss

Amira. We are continuing with our topic ‘Space’, where we have been learning about planets and

stars. We have made planets with marble paintings, used our fine motor skills to thread stars and

havewritten our names using sticky star stickers. We have also been learning about 3D shapes for the

first time. We were given toothpicks, marshmallows, cherry tomatoes and raisins to experiment with

making 3D shape structures. We constructed cubes, cuboids and pyramids independently.

This week in FS2 Green, we performed our assembly all about dinosaurs. We decided to tell the story,

‘We’re going on a dinosaur hunt’ by making a video that starred all of us as we travelled through rain,

wind and a forest to find a Tyrannosaurus Rex. We used the green screen, which allowed us to be

transported to a variety of settings and provided us with exciting backgrounds for our story including a

steaming volcano, a tropical rain forest and an enchanted castle. We loved working with our friends to

make our video and in particular, loved acting out the excitement of being chased by a dinosaur. Our

parents and the other children in FS2 and FS1 loved our film and we thoroughly enjoyed showing it to

them.

In Year 1 Green…

In Year 2 Green…

…we have been learning all about Space and Space

History! We have made timelines in Topic to

represent all the amazing events that happened in

space such as Neil Armstrong walking on the moon

and Yuri Gagarin orbiting the Earth. In English, we

practiced using connectives to join sentences and

we also had great fun learning about question

words and forming silly questions to ask each

other. In Maths we learned all about 3D shapes and

made our own 3D shapes with clay. We have also

begun learning about weight - we weighed all sorts

of things in our classroom and found that some

things (like books) were very heavy indeed!

…we have had our science hats on recently and have spent some time learning about the conditions

that plants need to grow. Using our science skills we planted our own seeds a few weeks ago and have

grown them in different conditions to test what a seed needs to grow successfully. Finally, our

patience and hard work has started to provide us with some results! Here you can see what happens

when you grow a plant with no air, with no water and finally when you give a plant air, water, soil and

light. When you look at the picture can you tell which plant had which conditions?

In Year 3 Green…

In Year 4 Green…

…we have been hard at work learning all about mummification and have been incorporating our

knowledge into our history, art and literacy work. We have used excellent technical language such as

‘preserve’, ‘prepare’ and ‘embalm’ in our instructional writing and we couldn’t believe that the Ancient

Egyptians mummified cats and pulled brains out of

their nose in our history lesson! We have also been

getting creative in our class and made our own

silhouettes of famous Ancient Egyptian gods. Have

a go at year 3 green’s Egyptian ‘Guess who’ and see

if you can work out who they are.

…we have been learning about the Roman

Empire. This week we have been comparing

life in Roman times to our way of life today.

We have learnt about the types of activities

that Romans participated in when socialising

as well as the different types of food that they

ate. To understand what it would have tasted

like, we went to the cooking room to make our

own bread! We followed a recipe that that was

similar to the method that Ancient Roman

bakers and soldiers would have used, although

we used ovens rather than open fires to bake

our bread! It was a very messy affair but we

really enjoyed ourselves and most importantly

our bread tasted great!!

In Year 5 Green…

In Year 6 Green…

In preparation for our trip down the Nile, we have

been learning about rivers in Year 5. We have

developed our science and geographical knowledge

and have learnt about all aspects of rivers including

pollution and the impact this has on the land and

wildlife. In our english lessons we have been

learning about persuasive speaking and writing, and

as part of our finale to the topic we wrote speeches

to convince our audience to stop polluting rivers. We

were all very proud of our presentations and many of us had very convincing arguments, no more so

than Tarek, who, as you can see in in the photo, was extremely animated and passionate about what he

had to say. His delivery was a magic moment.

…we have been looking at the capital cities of North and South America as part of our topic, ‘The

Pan-American Highway’. After the Student Council highlighted a desire for more group work in Year

6, we decided to do a fun and fascinating ‘jigsaw’ geographical activity. This involved sending a

member of each group off to find out more about four capital cities across the Americas and then

reporting back to the group. The task allowed everyone to discover more about each city, while

learning cooperatively.

FS2 Concert

Friday 19th February School Closed – Half Term Begins

In PE… …this week we have been back outside now that the wet weather has disappeared, the sun has

returned and the temperatures have warmed up. In KS2 we have been continuing with our focus on

athletics in preparation for Sports Day in March. Teamwork has been at the forefront of our lessons

with the children in KS2 learning about relay racing. We have learnt about the distance run, the

different hand over techniques as well as how to increase our speed whether running on the straight or

bend of the track. All of the children worked well together as a team with classes cheering each other

on. Next week, we look forward to learning about the different jumps in athletics including long jump

and high jump.

Year 5’s have been very busy investigating rivers in

their topic lessons this week, learning to locate

and identify them on maps, as well as compare

the properties of rivers based on their

geographical location. Having quick access to

Google Maps, Google Earth, and

www.google.co.uk, students were able to research

the necessary information, view rivers from far

distances and close-up, as well as screen shot live

rivers directly from Google Earth. They then added

this to their classwork data. This is another great

example of how technology gives us immediate

access to international places right at our very

fingertips. Google Maps can be used at home to

help plan transport from one place to the next,

give verbal navigation directions for drivers, and

can even be a great tool to compare weather

forecasts if your family is planning a holiday to a

destination in another country!
