Fab Frogs Colour Pattern Cards Ways to use this resource to promote early literacy through play in your library These cards encourage matching and recognising skills, as well as learning basic mathematics concepts like patterning (red-blue-red-blue) and sequencing (1-2-3-4, a-b-c-d, small-bigger-biggest). Children can use different coloured and textured materials with the cards, e.g. playdough, counters, buttons, pom poms. Clap a rhythm to the patterns shown on the card. Children could also take turns clapping their allocated colour on the card. This develops the emergent literacy skill of phonological awareness (syllables) and is important for later reading. You could also develop their vocabulary by saying words as you clap, e.g. big- small-big-small-big or yellow-yellow-red-yellow-yellow-red Ask children to make a pattern with play items to see if you can continue it. Say what you see as you make their pattern to develop oral language.
