Morgan had been selected to receive the Work Adjustment Success Award given to only one recipient per year. Morgan was proud to tell the crowd about her job and her success. Part of Morgan’s success involves her current employment where she does indeed work with animals. Morgan began with Goodwill as a Transitional Work Adjustment student in 2008 in the summer program. After graduating from high school, Morgan was referred to Goodwill’s Supported Employment Program where she received job search assistance from her Employment Specialist Liz Husong. Morgan found a position working with animals and has made a successful transition from high school student to gainful employment. Staying FocusedThe most appropriate way to describe the first half of 2011 might be to steal a line from Charles Dickens famous novel,

A Tale of Two Cities, when he stated “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Clearly I am exaggerating

with the latter but Mother Nature has reminded us of the unpredictability of weather related events and two in

particular have had a significant impact on us so far this year.

Coming off a year in 2010 where the organization experienced tremendous growth in mission services we eagerly

looked forward to 2011. The year started with record snows in February that paralyzed the community for an extended

period of time resulting in our stores and programs being closed. Then on May 22nd our store and donation site in

Joplin, Missouri was hit by a devastating EF-5 tornado. I am very happy to say that none of our seventeen employees

that work at the Joplin location were injured by the storm, however, our building suffered significant damage and will

be closed for an extended period of time while we make repairs.

Despite these setbacks I am proud to say that the resilient employees that work for Goodwill Industries of Tulsa are

working hard to insure these events do not interrupt our ongoing mission services. The need for our services continues

to be at record levels and we are staying focused on the employment needs of individuals with barriers to employment

that we serve.

One example of this is the recent announcement by CARF International that Goodwill Industries of Tulsa received a

three year accreditation for its numerous Community Employment Services. Due to a new funding requirement by the

Department of Rehabilitation Services this was the first time that Goodwill Industries of Tulsa has sought accreditation

from this international accrediting body. This accreditation decision represents the highest level accreditation that can

be awarded to an organization and shows Goodwill’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards. An organization

receiving a three-year accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and demonstrated to a team

of CARF surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and

accountable.

The true measure of an organization is not how you are doing when things are going well but how you react

during difficult times. I am pleased to say that despite the setbacks we have encountered this year, Goodwill Industries

of Tulsa is staying focused on performing our mission services to the best of our ability. We are resolved to rebuild our

facility and plan to continue playing an important role in the Joplin community as it works to recover from the effects

of May 22nd.

Did You Know? • In 2004, 58% of Americans had no Wills to transfer their assets to their heirs?* • In 2007, 55% of Americans had no Wills?* • In 2009, 65% of Americans had no Wills?* • Nearly 1 in 5 (17%) Americans believe they do not have enough assets to create an estate plan?*

One of Goodwill’s resources is to provide you with information and planning services to make you aware of the opportunities for you and your family. Goodwill provides a no cost planning service for those who have questions regarding Wills and trusts. There is no cost or obligation for using our educational service; it’s just our way of partnering with you. Joplin Store Temporarily Closed

For the first time in 22 years, our store on Range Line Road in Joplin,

Missouri will be closed until our building can be prepared for

occupation. The

tornado which

struck Joplin,

Missouri on May

22nd took a path

which passed

through our

Goodwill store.

We were blessed

that all 17 of

our retail and

donations team

members made

it through the storm with no injuries. Three of the members of our store

team were on duty in the store when the storm hit. Fortunately, they

were able to take cover in our ladies restroom which provided adequate

shelter for them to ride out the storm.

We have received many encouraging notes of concern from our friends

in Joplin. They have expressed how much the store and the team has

meant to them and they are looking forward to having us back as soon

as possible.

Until our Joplin store can be re-opened, our eight other store teams

are reaching out to provide the excellent service which keeps our visi-

tors returning again and again to shop in our stores. We are encouraged

to see that, every day, first time visitors are discovering the Goodwill

shopping experience. For many, that first visit becomes a regular weekly

routine. We hope that over the next few months, our Joplin fans will ven-

ture south to visit our stores in Bartlesville, Claremore, Owasso, Tulsa,

Broken Arrow and McAlester.

Plans are still being finalized for getting the store ready to re-open.

We will keep you posted as repairs and construction progress. We are

looking forward to a very special Grand Re-Opening celebration to

welcome back our friends from Joplin and all of the surrounding

communities. Join our e-mailing list to receiv
